Cheap companies focus on the external part of their product. Heroes six has nice graphics but riddled with 100 + bugs. Of course Ubisoft likes to create 3D games.

I tried to make an independent search in my Google Chrome's Browser...
...and came up with the very old topic thread of Heroes 7 by Darklord(3rd page)on this very same web-site.
What happened to Darklord anyway? That member seems to have vanished into thin air? Knew too much about Ubisoft's plans or, what else am I missing here?
BTW: My browser security warnings stops me auto. of entering that very same topic thread.
Are all of these, now, getting old forum pages, being stored and totally hidden from members of the forum to go back in time to see if we are not repeating or plain trying to refer ourselves to older information?
This is very weird to me. Never happened before. Any Ideas?

I think, it's safe to assume, that IF Ubisoft decided 2d might be something, they would simply remake HoMM 3 in HD, look at the sales and have a meeting about it.

Stevie said: So technically speaking, 3D is obviously costing more than 2D.
All your link proves is that 3D costs more in term of work hours not that it's more expensive. 99% of the graphic studios work in 3D and there's a high rivalry that pushes prices down and we know Ubisoft has been thriving to get the lowest costs by picking East European or Russian studios because man-hours are way cheaper there than in the USA or in west Europe.
2D has now become a niche and you won't find that many studios that do it, even less that do it well (I mean seriously, look at the few 2D games that have been released, fun but ugly ...) thus prices will be much higher. It's the outcome of supply and demand. Low supply + High demand = high prices. High supply + Low demand = low prices.
In the end, it might take longer to create a 3D model, but the man hour cost will be cheaper than the man hour for a 2D model. Why would a developer take the risk of spending more money on a game that might not be welcomed by the gamers because it looks old-fashioned ? While real fans might not care, remember that Ubisoft doesn't really care about the old-timers anymore ... they've made it quite clear with both H5 and H6 + add-ons. All they care about are sales figures.

I dont think we will see 2d heroes, but I would snowing love it if it was the case.
Ubisoft published few very great looking 2d games in past few years like Child of Light, Rayman Legends, Rayman Origins, Valiant Hearts.
If heroes 7 would be done in 2d, i would really hope its done in details and polish how those game look (normally not same art style). 2D can look spectacular today. They can even do a 2d background with 3d units on them, something similar to how Project: Eternity is doing it.

[quote name=Nelgirith Low supply + High demand = high prices. High supply + Low demand = low prices.
As much as I agree with what you have written Nel. I think a little correction is in order here.
IMO it should be:
Low Supply + Little Competition = High Prices ; High Supply + A Lot of Competition = Low Prices.
Demand has less to do with the pricing here than Competition does.

The new rayman games were impressively good, it was high time that ubi realized their 2D appeal. And better yet, built up on what made rayman fun and improved on its gameplay. There I can honestly say that the guys in charge knew what they were doing and I wish I will be able to say the same for the next heroes..
I think part of what made a 2D heroes appealing is that everything looks.. symbolic. A few pictures might illustrate my meaning.
You can tell that none of the locations or pick ups are of a realistic size. This allows the adventure map to look more like an actual map with iconic points of interest. A tree might have the same size as a creature, resource or an obelisk but their iconic representation registers just fine on your mind. You know what they represent and how to best plan your routes to them. In H5 the ability to turn or zoom the camera made the map more life-like, as if you were there but in the process made it harder to navigate, at least for a number of people. Trees, garrisons, mountains all became larger so as to be more realistically proportioned compared to the hero which is beautiful in its own way but at the same time stretches up the map. You cannot have the same amount of items/locations in the same amount of space as you could in the past.

This is no longer a map, this is an actual landscape. But is that really needed in a strategy game? Or is the iconic size of the old games but a trip down the nostalgia lane? By all means I like the 3D heroes but would rather they toned down the size of some objects. I miss the old iconic representation of the adventure map.

Well, for starters, "Game Development Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional and independent game developers.". So those are people that know their game. Secondly, you cannot have such exact knowledge on the matter if you're just an amateur. So between his reply and yours, I would chose his any day of the week because it seems more informed and not just hearsay. Thirdly, he gave a simple example of character creation which is highly convincing.
And if that's not enough, I have an uncle that works in the video rendering industry and I had the opportunity to see him work lots of times. That's why I immediately responded after your reply, because it seemed to me that something was very off.
So yea, I got plenty of reasons to believe that working in 3D is harder than in 2D, and that the reason 2D might cost more than 3D is because of skill level, marketing and all that jazz...

Just thinking about factions in Heroes VII.
There were ideas of civil war in Falcon Empire. What if Ubi'll make some SUBfactions for known 9 factions?))
For example in vanilla we'll got 6 subfactions of Haven (by number of Duchies)

As long as you agree that working in 3D is potentially cheaper then in 2D. Which is what I have been arguing.
What you argue is that it is more difficult. On which I never made any claims towards.

Elvin, I think you hit the nail on the head. Though the 3D games still feature representations think of the Heroes (no full armies) and creature stacks, towns etc. In the 2D games a map looked like one a commander might use, while the newer games feature landscapes. I've been playing a lot of Heroes 3 lately and it gave me precisely that feeling.
I think we can all pretty much agree that 2D is extremely unlikely, but a lot of us would love it.

Thanks, did not ask for anything more, just do you know, as I know you can not talk about anything until you get permission.
And the reason that you know what will be released is somewhat a big hint for my suspicion on what will we be getting.

I favor 3D elevations for all (if done well)but maybe what would be best for the community is a Hybrid, like many have suggested. A traditional 2D adventure map with 3D battles on the landscape represented in the Adv map. I'd enjoy that just fine too.

I think further debating on 2D/3D is meaningless. There won't ever be anything less than 3D once it's implemented in a iteration of the game.
Oh, and thanks Elvis for confirming me Heroes 7. Pray to God Ubisoft won't see this and sue your ass. Don't worry, I took extra precaution measures so that won't ever happen. I hope..

When it comes to 3d assets, i wouldn't mind reusing most of h6 unit models to cheapen the production costs. Models look good even for todays TBS standards.
That case we would have a lot of work for 6 factions already done.
Anyway, time will tell. I am looking forward to announcement.

Reusing Heroes 6 models would not be desirable if you ask me. Sure, it would be cheaper, but it would also cause the game to feel like a ripoff of its predecessor even if the gameplay is completely different.
I too am looking forward to the announcement, I hope that won't mean that I'm in for a disappointment.

ELVIS confirmed it's Heroes VII? Does that mean that the King is working on the soundtrack for the game? O_O
