Storm-Giant said: Then again, all spells should be given appropiate mana costs so Knowledge could become relevant too. A fine line to balance.
Extra duration every x spellpower would be great. Mana cost should definitely be tweaked, it just isn't right to give the mass version of a spell for the same cost as the regular spell. Especially given how powerful those spells are, I have a feeling that the values are way out there.
Also something I have suggested numerous times: I even suggested a different kind of "magic support skill" instead of the silly "Enlightenment" (meta skills are always either a must-have or a no-no, never situational and offer nothing except either short-cuts or detours), based on duration: Magic Endurance or Perseverance which would give +1 turn spell duration on each level.
Of course this can also be an ability for each Magic skill: All spells of X School have +Y duration (Y depending on the level of the ability).
Bottom line is, that I have a strong feeling they didn't really put thought into how magic really works and how the advantages of a casting hero should be compared with a might hero and so on. I'd even go so far and say, they underestimated the importance of this.

between that, Heroes 3, and Baldur's Gate, it just goes to show,
the classic timeless PC games out there just keep on giving while their inferior clones end up taking a one way ticket to the dumpster lol

Like you said, timeless. But it's more than that. The transition from H1->H2->H3 and BG1->BG2 came with improvement and expansion on the good parts of the previous titles. There already existed an enjoyable title before that and they made it better, generally speaking. Both series gave you more of what you wanted. Same is probably true for age of empires but I didn't play it much
@JJ
Similar hunch here but then it is kind of noticeable in practice.

The other times I uninstalled and reinstalled was to make it work. This is the first time I do so out of disinterest in the game and also some other concerns like PC health and download security.

It's not entirely fan-based, to be honest. The Forgotten was developed mostly by fans and of such high quality, that Microsoft decided to brand it as an official expansion to the game. Around the same time, realising that the game was still very popular, they released a true HD version of the game.
For this expansion, the production wasn't fully fan-based, but in close cooperation with Microsoft, so you could say it's semi-professional. Quality is higher than The Forgotten, for what I have seen briefly.
The downside is that Ensemble Studios, the game studio that initially created the game, was disbanded years ago and as such most of the source code is unavailable. It has caused some issues with respect to Monks, for instance (and the mechanic of picking up Relics). So while they've been able to work around some of the issues, they've been unable to really touch the core code of the game. Still, I am amazed at what they've created.
Edit: For those interested, there's currently a Weekend Deal on Steam, running up to November 9th, shaving off 65% of the entire Age of Empires 2 brand. The package contains:
- Age of Empires 2 HD (includes The Conquerors)
- Age of Empires 2: The Forgotten HD
- Age of Empires 2: The African Kingdoms HD
Information can be found here, total price is just a whopping low 11,20 Euro's due to the 65% cut.
There's also another package, that contains the above Age of Empires 2 bundle and Age of Empires 3: The Complete Collection. Total price in Euro's for that one is just 27,49 (normal price 54,99, this one is cut off by 50%). Information can be found here.

Dont sing too many praises for Microsoft. Yes AoE2 got new stuff, but thats because they basically killed the franchise and Ensemble Studios (along plenty of other studios) years ago lol
