I'm actually having a blast right now with X-Com2.
I can recommend it if you like turn based strategy games.

Be cautious but don't write it out. There is power in the voice of leaving customers. Disappointing that a feature has to cause an outcry before it is considered more seriously.

So let me translate that: Disappointing that a feature has to cause an outcry before it is considered that it should actually work.
*slow clap*
Flawless analysis, Elvin. I'm impressed. I mean really, why would they even need JJ when they have YOU there? You're the only beacon of knowledge they'll ever need.

AoW 3 was released in spring 2014, and I've been playing the game right through, from release until right now, when I made a turn in my PBEM game with yogi. I don't think I missed a day playing at least SOME AoW 3.
What that proves is that all rose-colored looks at the past and years of playing a game are not something that isn't possible anymore. Even in 2016 a game that is in the same niche than Heroes can be so good that I can play it years on end. I did it with HoMM 5 as well, mind you.
The other day I fired up Heroes 7 again, skirmish map, and I was bored to death after the first battle with tap-dancing stacks. You know what? Even though Heal and Regenerate were too good in H6, those battles were WAY more fun. You really had to think about what to do in battle to avoid losses which was crucial, since your starting armies were tight. And with the revised building costs it wasn'r clear-cut what to build either (go for core upgrade or elite base dwelling). HoMM 6 has its problems; the game is short on content, hero skilling has been botched and so on - but the game is so much more interesting to play than H7 it hurts.

I was originally going to post this in an older topic more specific to the idea, but apparently they are so far back in the list of topics that I didn't want to necro one super-crazy...
A moment ago, I was half-jokingly mulling over the notion of Inferno and people being annoyed that everything is red and on fire - the solution, therefore, was to have an equivalent faction for each of the other elements so everyone could be happy! I mean, could you imagine what the Water equivalent to Inferno would be like?
...oh, right. Sanctuary. Never mind.
Well, what about a faction purely about darkness and shadow? Everything black and inky...
Or... well, it has a bit more purple than what I was thinking, but Dungeon totally fits the bill there.
Okay, what about Ear- oh, come on! Sylvan already has that in the bag! Urgh.
Air? Well, I guess the sky cities of Academy more or less count. Yeah, technically more "magic" than just "air", but when you think about it, the majority of their units fit a general "air" theme to them.
Aaaaaaand Haven is pretty much "Light faction incarnate" already.
...so THAT'S what's wrong with Ashan! When you get down to it, everything is tightly segregated not by faction, but by elemental alignment. It's this kind of mentality that locks out the potential for ice or shadow demons in favour of constant fire and brimstone, or skybound pegasus riders from the Sylvan faction.
Heck, the names "Sylvan" and "Inferno" already seem to lock out the ideals. We didn't have those problems with "Rampart." Heck, ANYTHING could fall under "Rampart" or "Fortress"... or "Castle"... or "Tower"...
Maybe towns should just go back to being named after catch-all fortifications and other ambiguous nouns. People hear "Inferno" and immediately think of fire - so why not something different to represented extradimensional insidious forces? "Abyss", "Rift", "Void", "Pit", "Sanctum", "Altar", "Distortion"...
Anyways, apologies for the rambling tangent. A joke post ended up twisting into a rant I had to get out of my system. Thought you guys might be interested.

You are quite right. Though I disagree about thematic factions such as inferno and sylvan being a problem, all it takes is some creative thinking.
Oh man, I'm killing me!
Anyways H6 clearly showed what the problem with creative direction is: Its severe lack of creativity. Everything red! Everything blue! Everything on fire! H7 has improved on that account but again, they had to face the fanrage to get it. And even so, for a patch they made factions colour-coded per hero banner because we all loved it so much in H6. Baby steps..
Honestly, the team needs someone to sift through our feedback because apparently they have not been paying attention since H5.

Look, the day they showed us that fateful skillwheel I suggested to at least define a hero class skill wheel by pattern.
That would mean, for each hero class there would be the "blank pattern" (and you'd name that hero yourself starting with one). "Blank" means the minimum required for Class.
So the defensive Might class, for example, would have the racial as a Master and Defense as a master (that is, those two slices were already named accordingly). The rest would be more loosely defined. Can't have a Master in any Magic skill, can only have Light Magic as Major skill, can't have Offense as a Master or Major, can have a maximum of 2 neutral skills and 2 magic skills (for example).
The named heroes would have a somewhat better defined skill wheel when you start them, mainly because they had a certain special that might let them start with a certain skill on a certain place, but for playing purposes there would have to be at least 1 skill of especially magic, neutral and might you could pick (within the allowed rules for class).
Note also, that this would have made the random mode of leveling your hero a lot more interesting, because there would be simply more skills that could appear, including the magic ones.
I think that would have worked, once the skill wheel was condemned to have that shape, so excuse me when I'm not too thrilled about the new development coming more than a year after it should have been done.

Now then, protocol recommends headshots, yes? Least we can do to honor his memory is to prevent his shell from infecting others.

In some way, AoW3 could have been the new, innovative and successful Heroes title. It is so much more strategical and complete than the Erwin abominations, and the spirit is way closer to a Heroes game and how it is supposed to feel.
