That novice/expert/master thingy is unnecessary. Why are they trying to implement changes like that? As for 4 level magic system, it could turn ok, so I guess we will have to wait and see.

I think that after what happened with Sylvan it's wise to NOT put such global and game-core mechanics as levelups and spell system to the vote.
Or you want to taste the fury again?

It has been very clear right from early on that the 7 magic schools was not up for debate. On of the worst design choises in my oppinion, and one that rubs off on so many other game features. The reduction of 5 spell levels to 4 is a natural extension of this, because filling out 7x4 spell levels is hard enough already, with 7x5 being a genuine pain. Even if we only get two spells per level in each school (which is too few!) that's still 56 spells with current system, 5 levels would bring this up to 70. With a more sensible three or four spells per level in each the numbers increase to 84/105 (three per level) and 112/140 (four per level) which just goes to show what an absurd missfire the 7 schools are.

I think there will be 3 spells for 1-2 lvl and 2 spells for 3-4 lvl.
So we will get 70 spells
|

Game developers have no obligation to put every aspect of their game to a vote. Listening to fans is good and necessary, but it has its limits.

I actually like it. It reflects the 3 ranks of the Medieval guilds. Sure, some had more ranks in between, but all guilds had Novice, Expert and Master ranks.
Why not call it 'core', 'elite' and 'champion'?

True, in most Heroes games but in Heroes 4 Expert was a middle level - you had Master and Grandmaster levels.
Also in MM6-10 you have Master and Grandmaster levels beyond Expert and I think that is the reason why in H7 was chosen Basic/Novice->Expert->Master path of skill ranks.

I don't care about expert being the strongest. My beef is that it comes right after novice which doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, considering that novice skill gives access to 2nd level spells, adept or journeyman, would be a better name. To be honest for me even expert feels a bit misappropriate for setting.
