looom said: These releases are too frequent. Heroes VI is-was a calamity :<, hell I even like Heroes 5 (non Tote!? even) more than I like Heroes 6. I wouldn't be surprised if Heroes VII was even more dumbed down than 6, though I can't imagine if it's possible.
OH well, Heroes 2&3 will always reign supreme
2 and 3 were great for their time, in the hall of fame of game classics, but don't forget 4. It had the new thinking the game needed like free standing heroes and creative new hero classes. Heroes4 only lacked the final polish of an AI understanding the new features (incredibly important though), and a RMG.
If only NWC had made number 5 the series was planned to evolve towards more strategical gameplay too, and the artwork made for it was absolutely stunning and in the HoMM spirit. The fan base grows up, and we are not children anymore. A development more versus strategy then tactics would be very welcome and long overdue.
The biggest problem for the last few games is that the series have stopped up arround trying to make an improved Heroes 3 in hopeless attempts to please its fan crowd, instead we have gotten worse and less charming versions of this classical gem, and gameplay "improvements" that are bah.
To top it all they have spiced it up with a totally uncharming, excessive and vulgar artstyle that has nothing to do with the feel of the HoMM-series (Heroes 5, I'm talking about you in particular with your WoW-look, hopeless to navigate, bewildering campaign map and town screens).
The series lost me at number 5, but I admit I have some hopes for number 7, and I must say the screenies of the campaign map looks astonishingly beautyful and have charm. We'll see. At least I'm certain the music will be great.

Disagree about the artwork in NWC's H5 vision being stunning.
It was more expressive than most of Ubi's,
but their Lizard town had the same problem as the H5 Dwarf town (homogeneity) and most Faerie units were either uninspired or pure ugly.
Early 3D models only ever looked good from a distance.

Well, it catched the good feel of the old games perfectly in my mind. Instead we got WoW-vulgarity.
The old games made me dream about fairy tales and adventure, and they still manage to. The two last games... meh.
Some examples of units from the NWC vision of H5:

If someone wants some more in depth analysis and discussions about Academy townscreens and the Heroes 7 towscreens in general, I invite you in a more appropriate thread - Link I'm sure that the devs will appreciate our criticism as long as it's constructive, and consider it for eventual changes.

From Heroes III to Heroes VII
Very interesting and promising. Also glad they find inspiration in the great H4 Editor. Now if they only could bring back the fascinating gameplay with H4 single standing heroes as well. A Return of the H4 Scouting hero class would of course be pure awesome too, but really requires stand alone heroes.
Anyways, this is great news. Just make sure combining races will be challenging with morale maluses etc. and please return to the at some degree randomised 3 choices when a hero upgrades instead of these awefull static skill trees. When I think about it I think the skill trees is one of the major feature reasons the franchise has been dead to me the last two games. But there are many major reasons.
7 resources? Thanks God.
Less, and more passive, unit abilities? Thanks Jesus.
H3 Magic system? Nice. I think H4 had the best in the series, but the one in H3 is undoubtably at least the second best.
I'm in hope I'll like a Heroes game again, for the first time since 2002.

Return to simplicity of creatures' increased stats by their heroes is the thing that makes me happy the most. Will respective articles be presented for different iterations of franchise?

Quote: In Heroes VII, we decided to go back to the roots of this area and reduce stats to 7 (...).
Might (adds to creature attack)
Defense (adds to creature defense)
Magic (increases the power of spells)
Spirit (increases the mana pool)
Leadership (adds to creature morale)
Destiny (adds to creature luck)
Damage
These 7 types of stats do not cover health or speed. Has something been overlooked, then?

Heroes have never had any stat that increased speed, initiative and health of their units.

Regarding multi faction play, please don't forget:
Army Morale Modifiers:
+1 if all creatures are of the same town type
-1 for each town type mixed beyond two town types
-1 if undead are mixed with living creatures

lol nice.
I am ambivalent about the academy townscreen as a whole. High colour contrast with the middle bright and colourful and the rest less so, lack of transportation routes/means, underwhelming champion dwellings, seemingly out of place castle.. The buildings themselves look good but they don't mesh together as well. I don't mind the lack of civilian dwellings as much but I would have prefered it.
Regarding the titan dwelling.. It would be glorious if the cliff behind the capitol was extended to the right and the dwelling was placed on top of it. It should of course be LARGER. But just floating up in the air, not a fan. I love random floating pieces of land with palm trees and the like but less so with actual parts of the town. I bet there was a reason disciples ride carpets But even so, how exactly do rakshasas travel? Do they call a wizard taxi?
I'm glad for the return to some simpler mechanics. Especially the chance-based effects, how I'd missed them.

Also the simurgh dwelling really needs some kind of raw magical energy swirling around. You'd never guess this plain structure houses an awesome magical creature.

People's response to the way they dealt with abilities in HVII makes me sad and hollow inside. I think this is the most overlooked improvement H4 had over H3 and, imbalanced in terms of strength as it was, it still held a decent balance between passive/activated abilities and pretty much every critter had unique abilities.
The way they turned this around makes me slightly annoyed as I wholeheartedly prefer activated or at least passive aggressive abilities, while the more I see it, the more I feel they are inclined towards having a modicum of passive defensive abilities which will only make the game more reliant on various defensive placement tactics for factions. I do not enjoy HOMM battles in the same form as I enjoy chess: I want them to have a more fast pace.
