To be clear, no skill in H5 had more than 5 perks
EDIT: I have always put balance first and foremost. I'm not daydreaming about fancy features like most people here are. I wish for the game to appeal to as big a fanbase as it is possible and since HOMM is pretty much 70% multiplayer/hotseat players/modders and those who play them, it is fairly easy to judge which side needs the most attention to make the game as sound and as balanced as possible. The simplicity of H5 skill wheel, despite its interconnected branches, was what made the system so easy to adapt to. Having 10 perks will require loads and loads of testing to test out theories. And you will get to see a lot of (counter)strats in both campaigns and multi, therefore it is better to limit the choice and work on balancing the inclusions.

For me the H5 skill system was the best up to date, by far.
Each skill having branches of perks, some of them racial exclusive (I didn't like it when in later expansions they started giving everyone access to some of them, like Warlock's luck affecting spells for example), some perks needing a perk on a different skill to be unlocked, it made some nice hero building.
That game spell system was also my favorite, the spells were categorized by functions rather than elemental schools and it was great. You want debuffs? Go dark, want to kill? Go destruction. It was also cool that spellpower was optimized even for buffs and debuffs as it affected either how strong the spell was or its duration, but at least it had an effect over the final result. Taking the 7 elements system again is a mistake IMO, sometimes less is better.
There are only 2 things that I would've altered from H5 skills and spells system:
- H5 didn't have might or magic hero for each faction, it would have been much better if each faction could decide to go either way. H7 has the chance to do that.
- I didn't like the ultimate skills for some reasons. The first one is that some racial lines were too powerful compared with others that were too situational. It also forced you to go through some paths and ignore some of your favorite skills. I think that having racial exclusive perks was enough to diferentiate factions.

It is nice for hero building ... but you also had random skills ... which is a system that dosen't favour hero building, but rather picking the best solution and adapting. Perks that need other perks to be unlocked were not my favourite thing about H5 skill system at all. Altho I agree - H5 skill system was good. Random skills are like oposite of "hero builds". Since for any build you need to plan in advance. And in random enviorment planning is not an option.

That depends what do you mean by perks? If by skill you mean general skills(luck for example) and every mini-skill unlocked by taking luck(only those that are in luck "group") to be perk, then some skills definitely had more than 5 perks. I am looking at Logistic right now and in some factions it has more than 7 perks.

Agreed completely. Not saying that it can't be better, but so far there wasn't a system in Heroes games that comes even close to it.

Darkem said: Perhaps it's because of the graphic style of most of the Korean/Asian games. Oversized weapons and sparkly characters? People call this style "anime" because it's the simplest and quickest association with other "popular" products like tv shows and comics from Asia.
My God how I hate this style, and how it has sneaked itself into the Heroes-series from H5 until today.
Can't put it hard enough how vulgar and uncharming it is. I lack words to express how sad it makes me. It's not only excessive weapons, but excessive armours and excessive use of all kind of things. It turns me off, and makes my heart bleed. My eyes are bleeding too.

Very pleased about random skills making a return. Also interesting that custom choice features are introduced, this opens many doors. We need to put pressure on them for custom choice of proper town portal!
Anyway, merry christmas everybody, from far far away.

To all people of this friendly Heroes Community,
I wish that your Christmas is the best yet to be,
May it snow and turn the outside world to white,
And that candlelight and shining stars make it bright!
Celebrate it with friends and family, your loved ones,
After all, Christmas comes around each year only once,
So deck the halls and light the fire in your hearth,
Share and care, and feel the lightness in your heart!
Let us remember what is important in life, to share and give,
Remember it not only for these days, but as long as you live,
And maybe, if we all do just that, without constraint,
We can show that within each one of us, resides a Saint!
