This is amazing news! Now I can finally look forward to the game fully without having the nervous thought of non-random skills in my head. A very appreciated gift, Ubi/Limbic!

Great news! I think this was the perfect solution; bring back random skills, but leave it optional for those who wish to reduce the randomness. Well done people!

I disagree. H5 lacks the atmosphere of previous opuses.

but brings new atmosphere in it by itself. Which is not to be underestimated. Im sure in 15 years there will be people which are going to miss atmosphere of games Ubi has created, if Ubi won't be making this games anymore. It's all subjective. If you take all this away tho, and look at gameplay on itself - well let's just say I always considered H5 to be "modern remake" of H3. But it was more than this, because, from mechanics standpoint I would say (and don't attack me for it), H5 is superior to H3 in almost every way, except UI. There. And I'm not talking about art design, creature "lineups" or story. Because all of that is subjective. However this is also what makes up the atmosphere.
For me, the best atmosphere comes from the very first Heroes game I played. And that's the original DOS based, Heroes of Might and Magic (A Strategic Quest). To me nothing beats that. From title screen, where all the mythical creatures are gathered together and cheering for the heroes ... to awsome town screens, which i belive i mentioned at one point, to funny and simplistic animations and sounds, and music ... yes. The memorable music.

I wonder how will they implement this RS on/off thing. Seems like it will require a lot of tweaking and balancing...

Nah, not whining, but talking sense does. My compliments to the developers. You are bringing hope back to a franchise that has been through its dark ages.
I hereby declare that H7 shall be given the title: A NEW HOPE.

Wouldn't they just make the "pick what you want" option first (like they already intended), then just add a toggle for "2-3 selections not yet chosen by the player are randomly drawn up (provided prerequisites are met)"? Assuming they don't go for a completely even draw percentage with all remaining options, the closest thing I can think of for "a lot of tweaking and balancing" would be adding specific draw percentages to each option.

I wonder too. I hope they will study well the system as it was in H3 and H5 and that they will put some serious thought into it in order to provide the best game as they claim. It would generate a lot of hate if the random system is just poorly implemented.

well if skills are like those in H6, then there's no worry imo. Those kind of skills would work quite well in random enviorment. They will probably not be completly random - magic heroes might get more chance of getting magic skills, for eg., which imo isn't that hard to implement. You don't need much more for them to work hornestly.
If on the other hand we have skill trees and ultimate skills with tons of pre-requiered skills to unlock - it might become a mess...
Best case scenario is ofc to have 2 diferent skill systems entierly, but i don't keep my hopes up for that, since that would require far too much effort and resourcess.

In Heroes VII we will get skillwheel (or something similar) and it will be separated into three sections - Magic, Might and "Neutral" skills (probably luck, morale, some skills associated with developing your town and probably faction skill), hence thos system will be just more advanced version of one from Heroes V.
In my opinion skills' aqquirement will look like this: after you get new level, you will be able to choose from 6 skills - 3 magical, 2 neutral and 1 might for Magic heroes and the inverse for Might heroes. Probably similar situation will occur with perks. Just add to that different chances of obtaining specific skills and voilà, the basis of skills' system is ready!
PS. Do not forget to add perks which are faction exclusive! They make them even more distinct.

What we need is meaningful skills (it isn't necessary to have them all equally important). H6 system where a skill would give you like +3 to morale, when morale could go up to 100 made me cry
Random system should give you two skills and two perks to choose from (like H5), the key is not reapeating H5 mistake (randomness values being too crazy).
