a publisher is a fickle thing I guess hue hue hue
One thing is to get inspired by something, another is to deliberately copy it. The best way to judge is not to look at Nival or Ubi but to look at the work of Olivier Ledroit, he gave the basic guidelines for theme and aesthetics.
Neither you or me know the truth, but we both know the result. And the result was a shift from the "very close to WH copy" to "WH style/theme setting".

Well, that sea elf looks fun, hope it will be a good neutral Also, I can't understand some of you, guys, on the topic of lamasu. It's a mythological creature that it fits the style of the faction. Now if the style itself fits the faction is the whole new discussion.

I don't know who Dexter is in reality, but it wouldn't be the first time someone blames the big bad publisher for everything, especially since there are always some fans who are so eager to believe it without questions

Marzhin said: I understand your frustration, but Might & Magic and Heroes are not limited to Heroes III either.
I am certainly not limited to Heroes III, and as you very well know Lich and Vampire's appearance which seems to be requested by the community exists in other games than that one.
Marzhin said: But you can't blame Ubisoft for trying to have at least some consistency between the games set on that particular world.
I blame Ubisoft for scrapping the previous universe, not for trying the be consistent with its owns, but I could, as doing so often results to lots of frustration towards the gamers/customers.

oh I'm sure I will,
if you can establish some credibility first by leaking page after page of unreleased art and making many obscure predictions which conveniently come true lol
but yeah, I guess if Ubisoft says Ubisoft isn't to blame we must be eager to trust them, just as I'm sure we all trust their oh-so-convincing reasons for reusing the Lich lol

I blame Ubisoft for scrapping the previous universe (...).
In my opinion, this is understandable. Scrapping theold universe gave them much more field for maneuvre (the amount of lore in the previous one is gargantuar and keeping with it would impossible, especially when Greg Fulton stopped working on M&M games), hence incosistencies (except retconned assets) would not happen. Many people feel that Ashan is broken, thus they don't pay much attention to lore. When the old one had remained and some controversial decision had been made, the outrage of fans would be at least twice as big because of ruining their "games of childhood" or something. Creating every new game new Heroes world wouldn't also be a good idea because many people would accuse them of inconsistency andsuch process would generate greater costs. Overall, the decision to leave that world seems logical. Let the demons of past stay where they belong - in our memories.

Hey we all choose what to believe.
You believe he is an actual developer and you have your right to believe so.
I will never believe anything vague on the internet. Never. Give me actual concrete evidence or I won't buy it.
Edit: I actually find it plausable that Ubi wanter Heroes 5 more Warhammery. Heck it sells. It looks like it. But since I don't know, I won't start a crusade about it. I live by the facts.

Quote: Before Ubisoft purchased the franchise, Heroes of Might and Magic V had already been under development at New World Computing. Though the original incarnation of the title went unreleased when publisher 3DO filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in mid-2003, several relevant interviews and pieces of concept art offer some insight into the developers' intentions. Ultimately, Ubisoft chose not to adapt any elements of New World Computing's work in the finished game.
Quote: Three town lineups out of a total of six had been created and awaiting refinement. One was a purple-attired Haven similar to that of Heroes IV, another was a feline-style town in the style of the Sorceress town or Preserve, and the third was a reptillian faction blending elements of both the Heroes III Fortress and the Lizardkin society of the Dagger Wound Islands in Might and Magic VIII. Rendered artwork of all three factions was created and later released by Tracy Iwata, one of the series' long-time artists.
Keith Talanay created several architectural renders, while Nowa Morisaku-Yu drew concept art for the team. Other creatures with such art which had either not been modelled or released include the Cyclops, Harpy, Minotaur, Vampire, Valkyrie, Warlock and Wizard. Titans, Giant and several Dragons were to return, alongside all-new creatures. Additionally, Jon Van Caneghem essentially confirmed that Genies would make an appearance. An undead faction was on the drawing board.
Quote: Though no concrete information was released regarding the game's storyline, Christian Vanover strongly hinted that it was to take place in Axeoth.[5] The presence of purple-attired Haven units and an Elven faction could suggest that the campaigns were to involve Palaedra and Aranorn. Alternatively, the Lizardkin imply that it may have taken place on Aalondor, Axeoth's only known unexplored continent.

Say what you want Marzhin but story and art direction is all under Ubi control.
The anger is not even about the fact that the Lich is not skeletal. It would work for a Necromancer unit but it is not a Necromancer but a Lich. It would still be a horrible looking Necromancer but it would work. Ubi has managed to write itself into a corner(again) by strictly claiming that this is now the official canon and nothing is going to change that.
That stubbornness to change and the unwilliness to progress the universe(and maybe the lore) is going to drive the fans away for the next couple of games.
Consistency is a great thing for a univers but if that consistency is that of diarrhea then don't expect any enthusiasm from the die-hard fans.
