Are of control is one of the rare things that could be taken over from h6 and improved upon. A strategic place of which conquering is a priority, so it has potential imho.

Speaking of which, wasn't the process of developing Heroes 7 extensively advertised as being based on taking what was good from the other games, especially from Heroes 3? How did the devs identify the "good", on what criteria? That it was well received - which begs the question why do we still have not well received elements still in Heroes 7 (Necropolis, lousy townscreens, color coding, etc.) - or that there is something objectively "good" - hence nostalgia not being a factor?

We said the gameplay of H7 was taking features from all the past Heroes. Whether or not you like the art direction and lore of the game's world is another matter.

Regarding the gameplay, there were things we liked, and others fans have been asking for, especially after H6. Obviously, there are many different opinions out there -- in fact, there's not really one Heroes community, but Heroes communities -- but sometimes big trends appear. Like "bring back more resources" and "have no less than 6 factions" and "no Conflux and Dynasty system"

When concepts are picked from the past games, it doesn't mean doing it exactly like it was before: the game still must be a coherent whole, and all the features need to interact harmoniously with each other. Which is also why some concepts of the old games were not reused, because the game designers felt they wouldn't have worked well with the rest. And of course the designers do bring their own ideas to the table, because that's what being a designer is all about, after all. It's all a matter of finding the right balance.

Now this is how I perceive it, anyway. I'm not a game designer. My job on H7 is mostly related to storytelling and mapmaking, although of course I share my opinion quite often

I'm having a difficult time comprehending a valid reason for which creating a better game than Heroes 3 is not achievable. Apart from unwillingness I can see nothing else.

I'm actually addressing this in a previous post.

Because we talked with him quite a bit (even discussing some of the early ideas we had about H7), and it didn't feel like he was just being polite. Of course, you can never be 100% sure.

After working on Might & Magic for 20 years he made clear that he was actually enjoying working on some other properties. Nobody wants to be chained to the same thing all his life, you know Which is also why I'm pretty sure his answer in the MMXL Q&A (that you quoted a couple of pages ago) was just him being playful with the fans that are only ever asking if he wants to make another one ^^

Seriously though, last time I exchanged a couple of emails with him he was starting a new company to work on smaller projects, so I don't believe he'd be interested to work for Ubisoft anyway, not right now in any case. But I can't wait to see what he will create next

I don't know many people who'd be interested to.

Why not? If I had knowledge in computer coding or be supreme artist, I would not mind in the least to be employed by one of the bigest gaming companies in the world.

Working from home most of the time, reading drama unfolds on various forums on how Ubi is responsible to messing up their favourite games ... nothing better.

I would be like: "Yea, you don't like purple Minotaur do you?, I'll give you a pink one you snow!" ... "That'll teach'ya"

And I would be able to play all games developed by Ubi free of charge. How awsome is that? When games are free, there's not much to complain. And if I don't have time, I can give my kids or wife the game.

And if the game's good, I could walk around, and be like: "Yo kid, you like this game do you?" And he'd be like: "Yea, but it's not something for old geezers like you, you wouldn't understand." And I could say: "Stupid kid, I'm the one who made it, so stfu and respect!"

Yea, working for Ubi must be awsome. Marzhin maybe has more insights tho ... so maybe it's not as I immagine it ...

(Note: this post has lots of off-topic text)

Honestly, every sequel should try to upgrade and update the series. It should move the series forward while still staying true to itself. Every game should try to be better than the previous ones, be the best in the series.
Now I don't expect everything to stay the same, games will have different focus.

H1 I kinda see as kinda testing the waters.
H2 is already in essence very much what the series is about.
H3 with the expansions upgraded and polished the mechanics.
H4 again tried to improve mechanics and re-invent itself.
H5 Was restart to basics, upgrading mechanics from h3 when h4 didn't work out too well with it's improvements. Still it took some good from h4 like caravans, it wasn't forgotten.
H6 tried (IMO) go for larger audience simplifying the game. It also tried to re-invent things like skill-system, hero-system, global pool, dynasty weapons, achievements, etc. I think the biggest problem with h6 was that it tried so many different things at once and great deal of them failed, some in several ways. It had many great ideas IMO, but it failed to deliver them properly.

H7 is again restart like h5 was IMO. It's taking some things from h6 and h4 also trying to somewhat upgrade the game. Now my actual problem is the amount of unit-abilities. It's few like in h3, but to me it feels like going backwards and not really the same things. Units felt unique, different from each other in h3, here some abilities move between factions so they lose their "uniqueness". Also the spiderpolis re-made and even enforced was disappointment. H6 already started losing the dead/death feel of necro(to me at least) so using it again was huge disappointment. If it's bad idea it should get scrapped(like when moved from h4 to h5). Frankly it just felt like an excuse to re-use h6 spider-necro in h7 spiderpolis. I just hope the mechanics/battles will truly be complex, not in h6 style where each faction has healing spells, same tactic worked with each faction and all factions felt the same. Time will tell...

[Off-topic]
And since Marzhin brought in final fantasy as comparison on nostalgy:
Final fantasy VI was best
Final Fantasy VII became the best
Final Fantasy VIII was even better
FF IX not quite as good
FF X the best so far(love it as it's fully turn-based)
After that all downhill for me. Up till FF X(even x-2) the series remained essentially the same upgrading a bit here and there without major changes.
FF XI was first MMORPG, my reaction was WTF happened?!?!? From this point on monsters also were visible on "map" instead of random battles(which I hate).
FF XII introduced AI controlled party, I just move characters around, change how they fight couple times in the whole game. It barely felt FF to me. Tried to make FF X-style leveling system.
FF XIII Game became very linear, lost the freedom to explore map. tried recreate FF X leveling system. Ohh yeah nothing really turn-based, more about pressing button on right time.
FF XIII-2 no alternative party members, only 2 characters + monster, DLC, At least time travel was something "new", but overall disappointment.
FF XIII-3(lightning returns) party cut in half(ONLY ONE CHARACTER!?!?!?) and at best you get extra AI-controlled character for missions, Time-limit to game, pretty much zero interest in exploring areas since you got quests. Ohh yeah leveling system works by doing those quests and monster battles are just for equipment. Ohh Did I mention DLC, DLC and DLC(at least this time it didn't feel like it excluded story parts, just some fun and cool battle-gear). Ohh and of course battles are purely about pressing button at right second, which I might succeed few times in a row(with bosses you only need to do about 50-100 times in a row so I end up fighting same boss 50 times till pressing the button at right second becomes automated, so much fun that it makes me wanna throw the controller at the tv!!!)
FF XIV BURN IT WITH FIRE!!! I tried it briefly, represents great deal of things wrong with the series. Admitedly it might be ok game, but just not for me even after the re-launch.
Final Fantasy XV based on videos it might bring open world again, has many things I dislike also. Will buy it regardless, if it's good I'll buy next game. If it's crap it's the last chance I give to the series, too many disappointments and games going to wrong direction from my point of view.

[Off-topic ending...]

So while I loved earlier games new games in the series still managed to take their place as the best when right conditions were met. Returning to HoMM-franchise... My first game here was h2. I used to go play it at my friends house(computers were expensive back then and much more rare) and to me it was the best game for good while even with h3 out. Around year after h3 got 2nd expansion I bought my first computer and came to love h3 more than h2. I think like year or two later came h4 which was kinda fun, but it just didn't reach the level h2 or h3 had to me. It did have better campaigns and music, battles were fun being a bit different, but they were just too different. I consider h4 a good game, but it tried to break the HoMM -mold in my eyes a bit too much. When h5 came out it did have some wow-effects(not like the game), but it felt lacking something + it was quite unbalanced originally in bad way. I played h3, sometimes h4 & h5 at this time. I think it was around the 1st expansion for h5 that I started playing it more as it kept getting balanced and improved. At the time the 2nd expansion came it had already become my favourite game in the series as it just felt all-around improvement even with its faults. I have to admit that originally I didn't even play h5 campaigns, they felt horrible to me after h4. It was only after being terribly bored that I started playing them more or less annoyed and angry at first. Surprisingly I found myself even laughing at times for lines(some you could see even a bit offensive by todays standards probably), but they actually became part of the charm to me.

After that came h6 which was fun at start when it worked(damn conflux!). It's too bad it just couldn't keep the interest up. The campaigns were the worst in the series IMO(not counting h1 which I've only tried once). All campaigns circled around same thing and nothing really made it stand out to me. Game-play felt extremely mechanical and boring. Some maps had bugs/faults and many other problems with the game just plagued it for me. It was ambitious project, but it just failed on so many areas it never felt like really a good game to me.

In my eyes h7 has a very small chance to become THE heroes game for me knowing I dislike or hate many things about it. H5 has the game-play to beat which I'm certain h7 won't do because it uses h6 battle-style as base. H4 has campaigns and music to beat, but this part is impossible to judge to any degree at this point. This shouldn't still stop it from trying to achieve that. Even if it doesn't become the best it should be the best it can be. If it's a decent game I will most likely buy it and play it at times. If it turns out to be more like h6 it most likely gets passed by me as overall it was just too big of a disappointment to me.

Btw since speaking of expenses, cutscenes are completely unnecessary IMO, a narrator telling the story with few pictures or text works just fine. I even enjoy it when game "rewards" you with cutscene at end and maybe middle, but in games today devs just put more and more of them just because others do it(just my opinion). Also things like funny animations are completely unnecessary. I would much rather see unit-specific "critical strike" -animations or death-animations. They feel like wasted resources done just for the blog so people check them. Funny animations are something that should be done after everything else is perfect. Also if our faction-units end up as recycled as necro elites are/were I would just cut neutrals even completely off if it means getting proper "new" units. If game ends up as mediocre the neutrals won't do anything really to save it. It's only if game is good/great that neutrals can greatly enhance the experience(again just my opinion).

PS sorry for the long rant
PPS Sempai hilarious parody!
