Personally I think they did more harm to show those images and concept art sketches, than not. The problem was that it gave the impression that the units were being designed to roughly compare to the presented artwork.
In hindsight, they could just as well have shown units from H3 and H4 instead and achieve the same result. I guess it was a matter of "damned if they do, damned if they don't".

Depends. For instance, I'm positively surprised with the designs of Fury's core creatures.
But I think you are right, it was misleading and IMO some disappointment was to be expected.

I agree with this. Now, both the fans and Ubi will have to live with the positive/negative (depending on POV) consequences.

I agree, some of the designs have been a pleasant surprise.

You act like everyone who votes actually knew this but there were SO DAMN MANY comments talking about how badash the Bladedancer was. I honestly think that the only reason Fury won was because of that single picture.
Fury winning shows that the franchise has more young and new fans than old ones. And although it may was hype, don't forget that this hype backfired in the ugliest way possible and 1000 faces won for dungeon.if it wasn't for the medusa-hype,ashan dungeon would have been saved in my eyes.
Back on topic, lets wait for the official blade dancer art. But to be honest i wanted my blade dancer giving me some kitana realness.
And why would people new to the franchise with no previous experience with Sylvan vote for Fury? Are you trying to say that EVERY new person fell in head over heels love with the Idea of a deer? Maybe it was just that they hated the Idea of the Root Snake? What do YOU think drew them to the Fury lineup?
When someone who has absolutely no experience with a faction is presented with some unit names that they have no idea what means, of course they are going to ask for pictures to get an Idea of what to expect. So naturally when presented with the picture of a weird woman with WAY to much hair and compare that to what might be the coolest elf picture I have ever seen, they are not going to just ignore what they saw they, are going to vote for the cooler unit (of which the only knowledge they have of is the abilities and the pictures).
I would be more inclined to believe that you are right if I had not seen all of the people commenting on the Bladedancer art. It was not just a few people it was the vast majority of comments I saw (might just be me though).
P.S. Let me reiterate. I do not mind any of the units in Fury.
I actually LIKE the deer, and believe that a Treant champion sounds pretty interesting. I know, I know Burn the heretic!
EDIT: After seeing Dave's comment below I realized I should also explain that I like this core far better than the art we were presented with. The Archer is really well designed and I love that they went for something bright AND non human looking for the fairy. Basically what he said.

To be fair. Most of the core unit look good to me, and I could find atleast one positive thing on each of them.
The hunter is my favorite. They look like war units, whit their scaled armor and manly postures. One of my problems with H5 sylvan (apart from the antenna ears) was that elves look to weak, childish, not dangerouse enought.
Dryads look good on paper, but until I see them in the game, I'm going to fear a Djinn recoler
Pixies get a plus for breaking the color stereotype, and a minus for beeing a female, humanoid spirit (as well as the dryad, ghost, and Djinn, (kind of a pattern here)), and also for not going more for the less human looking depiction.

Well it could've been worse:
Personally I think that line-up votings are a bad idea. Sure, fans might get an impression that they "do something" for their franchise, but in truth votings mostly bring discontent and accusations like the "younger gamers going for Fury" one. I wonder if the game is even played by people other then some old-school HoM&M geeks

Fine models, bad portraits. Hunter looks like someone doodled all over his face with a blue marker and dancer looks like an Indian. No personality of its own, something to signify him as a blade dancer. Just an Indian.
I like the wildflower-pixie but the upgrade is ridiculously overdone. Wtf. Kinda liked the leaf version better but this is fine too.

I guess it is the Springtime/Summertime Pixie when their colors are more vibrant is relation to the colors of nature. Imagine a garden full of flowers and this little things (yeah, little, not so big as they show them) buzzing from one flower to the next tending the flowers.
It's got a bit of a magical and fantasy flair, which in my opinion balances Sylvan from the wild side of the primordial man (Ritualistic Indian and Celt) with the fantasy and fairy tale realm. Which ain't so bad.

@Hex
They are not too similar when you watch the pictures, but what happens when you see unit ingame? Can you notice the length of their hair when it is so zoomed out as if you are observing them from space station? I don't think so. All other details that change from unupgraded to upgraded are minor. A slight change of colour scheme would be better. For example, my Hamadryad can easily be distinguished from Dryad at any time unlike Oak Dryad...

Nothing great really. I used GIMP Image Editor, and just changed Hue for the Oak Dryad to be closer to Dryad from H5.
