Well I must say WoG sounds more tempting the more I hear about it, but I also like HotA and HotA also corrected some bugs and implemented a few good features.
I'm expecting some kind of update from HotA around new years eve, but I have no idea what's in it. I'll wait and see, but maybe I'll convert to WoG in 2016, you never know.

You're better off taking tactics, than ignoring it and running into an army with a hero who has tactics imho.

I posted earlier that I changed my mind regarding Tactics, it is a good skill and I like it much more after I speeded up animation speed and the new HD update that allows you to select creatures by clicking on them.
So Tactics is not bad at all. I don't feel I need to have it against ai unless I pick a hero that starts with it, but against humans it would probably be a good idea, as they will probably go for it as well.
There are alternatives to Tactics like having fast creatures, speedartifacts or spells like slow, haste, blind, forgetfulness or berserk, but they might come in to play later than Tactics would.

What I don't understand and what should have been implemented in the first place with the Tactics skill is that unit movement during the Tactics phase acts like the Teleport spell (maybe sans the spell animation and sound). Why the heck do I need to see the unit actually move, sometimes making a long tour around the battlefield due to obstacles and other creatures?

Yeah that is still annoying and quite tedious, but at least we don't have to click "next creature" a thousand times anymore.

In era you can select a creature during tactics phase and click where to place, yes. No need of walking the whole battlefield.

I guess HotA doesn t read this, but actually this skill is a little bit broken in end game. Half of the battleground is cover by tactics, it s huge and every good players love this skill.
I m sure people will continue to pick this skill even if you reduce the range of master from 7 to 5. It s viable for haste the slowest army and get 1/3 of the battleground size.

Well, that was corrected in H5. It work same as basic tactic in H3.

tactic means week 1 lvl 7 dwelling possible without any serious losses
also tactic can give units that have 8/9 speed the additional hexes to reach the other site, which is cruical vs ranged units(hordes of GEs for example)
i think a hero who had a spec like "starts with expert tactics" would be really good, possibly even better then log spec (as one of 3 first heroes)

Lacus starts with advanced Tactics, but his +2 attack to Water/Ice Elementals is ...not that good.

actually Lacus is one of the good heroes of conflux
luna, grindan and the logistic guys are the other good
tactics is useless for conflux i guess, but if i had to choose between lacus and some ranom +350 gold guy (like cathrin for castle) i would take him for the very first few fights, get expert tactics and duke with him some battles vs hordes of ranged units out^^
its sort of like terek with his haste special, not really that helpful in endfights, but he starts with it, and can give wolfriders the 3 hexes they need

Yeah that's why I mostly think Tactics is good for early game.
Conflux don't seem to have much use for Tactics when they already got the fastest unit in the game and they even have 4 heroes starting with Tactics, 2 which is practically the same hero twice.

Tactics is useful if you play tower, because tower units speed aren't the greatest in the game, if you have expert tactics and Naga Queens, you are in for something very good, because naga queens have no retaliation and they can reach any unit from halfway across.

Actually I intend to start a map tomorrow, playing as Torosar. Probably first time ever I start with him, since I used to avoid Tactics, but not any more. Excited to see how that turns out.

It depends. I avoid tactics when I'm playing tower, but when playing fortress or stronghold I try to get it.

A very good skill. You get so huge advantage over your opponent, you just can't ignore it. I have found it somewhat annoying in singles but like Sal said you can turn it off and then turn it back on when fighting enemy hero or shooters. My Death Knight and Barbarians sure like this skill a lot!
I do like more of the Wog tactics where you get speed instead. It changes the move order and still medium speed units like Behemonts don't get to the other side in round 1, unless hasted.
Because the skill is so powerfull in last decisive battle it's easy pick in any multi game.

I agree with you about tactics being optimal for Stronghold (and both classes get it very easily, when the hero doesn't start with it) and Fortress cause of the lack of speed of their level 7 units but I think is essential for Tower too, to protect the archers or bring the Nagas earlier in the fight.

Imho tactics skill is very useful & interesting. There are a lot to talk about, I just give some examples.
1 you can take advantage of topography & obstacles in the battlefield.
2 you can escape even meet fast neutral or enemy's hero.
