Poll Question:
Which (non-combination) artifact is the best?

I know it depends on a lot of things, but which artifact do you feel is the best in the game?
Should all artifacts be allowed or which should'nt be allowed?
(Regarding Tomes and Spellbinder's Hat we are assuming all spells are allowed)

Responses:
Angel Wings
Armageddon's Blade
Helm of Heavenly Enlightenment
Shackles of War
Spellbinder's Hat
Tome of Air
Tome of Earth
Tome of Fire
Tome of Water
Other (Please specify which as a comment)

So as usual, my response is towards L+U and larger random maps. Assuming that Armageddons blade was available as any other relic is.

Tough competition between spellbinders hat and armageddon's blade.

But in the end I think fly/dd/implo beat armageddon. Recanters cloak is surprisingly common, and it ruins the blade altogether. Also, to actually use it effectively you need to catch opponents army.

But 4 DDs per day give you so much speed and mobility, especially when you have multiple heroes who have air magic and some mana, that it is easier to find better arts, more army and so on. And implosion and all elementals are not that much worse in combat scenario either.

Sounds like a vote for Spellbinder's Hat then or did you vote for other?

Edit: Guess monere voted for other.

As with anything Heroes-related artifacts are situational as well. Sometimes the best artifact is tome of air, sometimes it's the angel wings, and sometimes it's the shackles of war.

I couldn't decide on just one, so I voted "other", mentioning here that all these 3 artifacts are equally important:

- tome of air
- tome of earth
- angel wings

I wanted to put shackles of war along with these 3 beauties, but... this item is really, truly, VERY situational, wheres the other 3 are too good.

EDIT: yeah, I somehow missed spellbinder's hat in your list. I'd add this one to the top 3 items mentioned above

I voted "other" with this line of thought-
you "missed" The Grail for some reason.

For me it's a choice between The Grail, the shackles and the wings.

With the wings all of the map is yours to do whatever you want.
With the shackles you can get the wings from the previous owner.
And with the Grail structure built you can get:
-all the map revealed(tower)
-all of the spells(conflux)

For obvious reasons, all artifacts listed above are rarely found in  the maps I play, thus I am much more fond of little ones, but with tremendous effect, as Spirit of Oppression, Cape of Velocity, Golden bow and Sphere of Permanence.

Well I never considered the grail an artifact, but I guess it could be seen as such.
If you wanna vote for the grail, vote for other and put it in a comment.
Besides if we are talking about grails there are 9 (or more) to choose from, so that must be for another topic.

For me on highest difficulty:

Shackles of War and Tome of Earth Magic(unless my hero know Ressurection/Animate Dead, Slow, TP, MS and Implo)

Killing best AI heroes is excelent for map control.

Tome of Earth. Town Portal isnt always available in the mage guilds. Then again, youre more likely to get the TP spell in a town than finding this particular tome on the map. But for the sake of ensuring that I've got TP, I'd choose the tome over everything else.

Angel Wings would be my 2nd choice.

It's interesting how the votes differ. I guess it's because it's kinda hard to choose the best artifact, as it obviously depends on a lot of things.
Personally I could vote for all of them except Tome of Fire and Tome of Water. But Shackles of War is very powerful, when potentially you can get ALL of the abovementioned artifacts with this one plus you eradicate the enemy hero and then it's only a major artifact.

Tough call. To me, it's a close three-way between Angel Wings, Spellbinder's Hat, and the Shackles. A lot is situational, but I went with the Angel Wings. With a Logistics specialist, the Equestrian Gloves & the Boots of Speed, a LOT of map area can get covered without having to expend MP's to move.

It's fun to pop over into enemy territory, steal their resources and/or outside recruitment centers and pop back into friendly territory, forcing them to take the time to reclaim them all

Voted Angel Wings cause you get fly for free but in fact is any of these: tomes of earth/air, spellbinders hat, shackles and angel wings. Armageddon's Blade and Angel Wings are good as early artifacts but they loose important as game develops.

I don't think the AB ever loses importance, but it's just my opinion. I had luck to find it in SoD-Complete maps.

Unless you grind the hell out of your hero by getting good artifacts, grabbing all XP points you can get and going into fights you may not win. This has risk towards your main hero and economy a little bit, but when you do it right, with a little bit of luck, Armageddon's Blade will own. Because spell power

I sound like an idiot, but as soon you pass the 40 mark on spell power, a lightning bolt can single-handedly kill level 7 units, let alone a WHOLE ARMAGEDDON.

Yeah Armageddons Blade with 40 spellpower (and maybe fire orb and sorcery skill or speciality) is something to take seriously. Of course it can be prevented with Orb of Inhibition or Recanters Cloak, but then you kinda need to know the enemy has the blade.

Not really.

To use orb of inhibition or recanters cloak all you need is to have them and have superior might on your side. And if you see in tavern that your opponent has more spellpower than attack/defence combined you will use them. Not really because armageddon specifically, implo or elementals with such power can and oftentimes are gamechanging.

Well I would never use Recanters Cloak or Orb of Inhibition unless I knew I could prevent something. I always pick Wisdom and Earth Magic, so I wan't to be able to cast spells. Wearing either of those artifacts also prevents Resurrection/Animate Dead for example and that is not good.

You are allowed to play in whichever way you want.

But if you see enemy main hero with main army, and his might strength is inferior you have a choice.

Attack with antimagic arts on, lose some army, possibly a big chunk of it, but win with no real chance for him to alter the fight.

Attack with no antimagic artifacts on. In which case you risk a lot of nasty spells that can to a degree negate your army advantage. Bersrk, implosion, elementals, antimagic+armageddon, and so on.

It just comes down to the fact that usually you don't know exactly what your opponent has. And so you assume that he has something nasty. Or else you will be very sad when he does.
