Young people do a lot of (really)stupid things. It would be best if they could be prevented from wasting their future and hopefully grow up into less stupid adults.
A few years back I read an article on teen behaviour and it would seem that the issue is that teens do not evaluate risk and reward as someone older would. They underestimate the risks and overestimate the rewards, even if it's just to stand out. Given sufficient motivation, they can be surprisingly good at a given task but normally they lack the focus and efficiency of an adult. They need a carrot dangling before their nose to shine

Kids holding on to trucks like that is actually quite a common thing, especially in poor countries where it's a form of cheap travel.
Here's something way more borderline, I once heard street kids here lay on the train tracks and wait for the train to pass right above them as a way of fun/daring each other.
