Just look at XCOM to see what must be changed !
What about the fact that simultaneous turn was the rule ?
The game would always work by turns but each turn is a semi real time you can pause at any time (in single player) and the turn of each faction end when their room of manoeuvre end, and there are daily, weekly and monthly quests - a bit like Heroes Online - so the movement point system would be a thing of the past, like in XCOM !

Here's what I have been preaching for the last decade or so:
"and the turn of each faction end when their room of manoeuvre end" straight out of gemeaux's own post. Just like the whole series of Civilization games has always worked for the past 10 whole years.
So, when all production and movement orders are completed then, the button End Turn appears on the screen. But, this time, the battles are the human player's choice on auto. resolution or, you command directly that army's actions on the battlefield.
Therefore, an experienced player would set the production of his village/town/city in automatically pre-determined order of building the dwellings while you concentrate on the adventure map with the exploration, flagging mines and, clearing out the neutrals for the artifacts + resources behind them while repulsing enemies or engaging in an invasion of the next territory next to yours.
Does that sound a bit more innovative for HoMM?
BTW: Good 3D graphics do not need to be sacrificed for this kind of drastic overall gameplay redux.

Yes, the turn end when you have done everything you can, when you cannot longer build or fight (when troops and heroes are too tired in every senses of the term), and invading new territories need/ask substancial preparation (garrisons marks the entrance beetween territories like in settlers games, and the defending troops are slowly growing more important when time passes (the player who conquer them keep benefiting of this advantage, perhaps an occasion to restore the famous HOMM 2 "Guard's Captain"

Slightly unrelated to the topic. It seems Tropico 6 got released and the reception was positive with good reviews from both the media and the community. So was Heroes 7 for Limbic just an unfortunate misstep and they actually have the know-how to make good PC games? Or maybe is Kalypso just a better publisher than Ubisoft and gave the devs a fairer treatment? (Haven't heard of Kalypso since the days of Disciples 3, unfortunately a similar flop to Heroes 7 as well)

Well.
I can compere the reviews of German Gamestar magazine. 18 years ago the first Tropico game got a rating of 87%.
TRopico 2 got 80%
Tropico 3 got 79%
Tropico 4 got 87%
Tropico 5 got 88%
Tropico 6 got 81%
Considering that there wasn't THAT much change with the game as such, I consider 81% pretty damning. Yes, it's still "good"; but how bad would the game have to be to earn significantly less a rating?
With Anno 1800 being released next week AND a very similar kind of game it remains to be seen how the game will actually end up.

A good company would. Because it's not about making the same game once again with a slightly different aspect or two. It's a serious task.

I wouldn't put too much stock in Gamestar ratings or any other gaming outlet out there for that matter, considering how much they gave Heroes 7 at the time. I find media in general untrustworthy in that respect. The big difference here though is the community that seems to be rallying behind. Take Heroes 7 and its disastrous 45% positive on Steam and that after many patches and fixes and whatnot. Tropico 6 gets over 80% on release! I wouldn't say it's damning at all, I'd say it's a pretty solid success. Granted, I have no idea about the franchise except for bits and pieces, but if you're saying it didn't change much, then why is it doing so well? They obviously doing something right. And why didn't they do it with Heroes?

Frankly - no idea. It's a city-builder, and imo they are all more or less the same. It's basically like Frankenstein and making the same movie over and over again, just with different actors and a slightly altered script and location.

Does this company still have a soul? I believe it would not have abandoned Heroes if it was its own brainchild, like Assassin's Creed. Notre Dame will be saved, the Assassin's Creed saga will continue, but the Heroes franchise is still in the dumpster fire.
I've said it a million times: they should've started their own in house studio from the day they took over this franchise, instead of pawning it of to cheaper and cheaper studios. I feel like it's too late in every sense. Ubisoft will focus on their flagship titles only and looks like Heroes is no longer one of them.

yes, it's too late, and no, ubisoft - like most other big companies - doesn't have a soul. Even Assassin's Creed (whatever that is) probably seems like it's their soul because it sold well, so they've nurtured it for the sake of profits, but otherwise they would have dumped it just like Heroes.
Time to move away from HoMM, or continue playing the evergreen versions (Wog, HotA)

I want to, but I barely play any games anymore. I find myself more interested in story and graphics than gameplay nowadays, so i just resort to watching cutscenes on YT. Because when it comes down to it, all games are based on similar economics, resource management, moves and controls etc. that have hardly evolved. The only innovative games seem to be those indie abstract ones where you draw lines or push blocks or whatever, but I feel like I'd rather play crossword instead. I hope there are some truly great games I've missed out on that I can get back into.
What do you play, monere ?

same here
I don't play games anymore, cause I don't have the drive to do it anymore. I'm just trying to create a steady income for myself so I can focus on my long-life dream (make the best heroes-game like ever).
The last games I have played, and which I have liked are Vaporum and Subnautica, and I highly recommend both of them... IF you are into such games, that is.
Other than this, I don't play games anymore. I just watch short gameplays on YT of the games I used to like and play (mortal kombat, heroes, etc), and I also watch cartoons (foghorn leghorn cracks me up like you can't imagine xD)

not everyone is quitting, though. I'm sure (like, dead sure) that there's plenty of folks out there still playing video games... it's just that they play the games that are available and popular today. As soon as a new HoMM game will come out the fans will devour it... if it's good, that is
