I believe nowadays a lot more people want to see units feeling and playing like class archetypes. A specific feel, some adaptability, more than one tools to fulfill its role in combat.. Nowadays having a melee attacker that just attacks or an archer whose special is to just shoot, it just doesn't cut it.

Beholders are one of the most iconic monsters and have been featured more in the MM world than Troglodytes.

kinda out of topic a bit but I have been wondering about this for a long time. Beholders is supposed to be an IP belong to WotC/D&D so why did NWC managed to get it into their game?
Series like Baldur's gate and nverwinter night have it too, but they were license from WotC.

I looked this up and found nothing about it. All other games kinda avoid this creature or have to give it different names (evil eyes or eyeball monster or whatever)

It might just be a personal preference, but I always considered Beholders one of the more unique monsters. They also have a history in the RPG MM games and you find the design influences even in games like Doom (the Cacodemon). I'm not so much talking about the original DnD design, but rather the concept.

i think its easier to say how you feel about this game, what you like and what you don't like but it's kinda hard to pinpoint the particular mechanics, or system that make it works. I think Hmm as a franchise from 1 to 3 was a mess that just some how .. worked. Its core game has always been flawed, and every iteration has its own undeveloped aspects. Many people think H3 is perfect, but I think h3 and h5 are just the least frustrating to play, or "still feel good despite all the flaws".
I have been seeing people opinions about the game but somehow, for one mechanics to be hated by some people, there will always be some others who like it.

I think that is a very good way to put it.

In a game like HoMM, flanking as a general mechanism makes zero sense, and that includes HO. It is, however, a good creature ability. It might also be a Hero ability to give this to creatures led...

Very much agreed. HoMM doesn't provide enough fine-grained control over movement to make it a good general mechanic. And in general, using flanking attacks means that you just exposed the rear of your own unit to enemy creatures.

It's nice to have, but it's a rather shallow feature. However, it makes a lot of sense on units like Assassins.

IIRC, WotC made the name 'Beholder' their trademark, so at least no one should be able to use that name without their license. The characteristic of monster is not what anyone can patent, so everyone can use it, just that they cannot use the same name.
Thats why i said all other games, comic books and novels use alternative names, including Cacodemon.

Only M&M franchise and King's Bounty have the same monster with the exact same name without any relation to WotC or DnD. Thats what confuses me.

Another way to look at is is that NWC might have made the Beholder before WotC/D&D acquired it as an IP.

This might just be the case.

As I understand it the King's Bounty rights got separated from the Might and Magic rights at some point. The last post-NWC King's Bounty wasn't in Ashan,  and obviously NWC's King's Bounty wasn't.

I don't know. It doesn't strike me as similiar to it's predecessor in atmosphere (which was fairy tale like). It looks like a generic medieval strategy, sprinkled with monsters just for formalities sake. It's seems they went with a more "mature" look, but the armies seem really generic (standard medieval infantry).

We'll have to see, it's just the first trailer.

Yea, lacks the fairy tale visuals. Looks Skyrim-ish, or Heroes 7-ish, the grey, down to earth color scheme. Not a big fan, though it can work, we'll have to see.

Surprised at the completely boring trailer

Looks like there will be multiple units per stack, curious what they had in mind with that. I prefered the atmosphere of the previous ones.

Its really quite simple : putting more units in a stack (visually) allow to show the level of a creature and prevent to have to play on perspective to show its actual size, and hereby comfort the hexes system (by opposition to the square system used in battles in homm 5/6/7)...

If it wasn't for the name, I would have thought that this is a Legends of Eisenwald 2 trailer. Still... now I'm even more interested.

King's Bounty... King's Bounty... Ah, yes, wasn't that like HoMM 0? Haha, checkmate sceptics, we are getting that Heroes 8 in 2020 after all! *victorious heavy breathing*

Though I'd really love to see some gameplay footage before getting too exited.

That wasn't a problem in the previous one.

Yes but it was hard to figure out the level of the creatures without right clic on it...

I think the destruction of enroth continent have effect on heroes franchise
the destruction give effect on gameplay, mechanic, the winning formula, the winning continent
i think the continent, the environment design, the lore, have large impact on gameplay, mechanic, how we play heroes game
maybe this old dev mistake, so the new dev just continue the mistake again, then again

the heroes winning formula cannot be restored because enroth is destroyed
the implementation of the new formula always not satisfied
the  two new continent cannot surpass the glory of enroth

If Sandro ever succeeded on Ashan, we could have had the power to rebuild Enroth... Otherwise, it a ship having sailed a long time ago.

This makes no sense. It is the gameplay and feel that defines a heroes (or any) game, not the setting. The setting only matters in the campaigns and I'm not even sure if most people play them. Newer games might be an exception because they are shipped with a tiny amount of maps and you are bound to run out soon lol
