this is just another sign of what happens when brainwashed bullies get their way.

what makes it worse, are these targetted people cowing and apologizing to bullies. stop apologizing for retaining common sense and critical thought, ffs.

a sensible man with a backbone who knows he's right, would tell them to pound sand, and wipe their ass with whatever "authority" would see fit to cow to these brainwashed lunatics.

Dude, plenty of languages use some kind of neuter in pronouns, including English in the plural. It's just become more commonplace to also use it in the singular in situations where you want to address both or neither sexes.

Dude, but I am addressing the single guy in front of me, not his/her (or "it", for snowflakes) gender(s). And just the fact that something has been commonly used doesn't necessarily make it well used.

Having a gender-neutral third-person pronoun is not a bad idea at all.  Suppose there is a killer on the loose that we know next to nothing about.  Using a gender-specific pronoun (eg. for a report) would be senseless as our knowledge is limited, and assumptions shouldn't be made; using "he or she" would be a slight inconvenience, which I presume should be avoided.  However, I don't think that "they" is a good solution for that, and would rather look for a different word.

Languages change organically over time and it has become much more common to use 'they' as either plural or singular. This has been gradually happening for a long time and not necessarily something decided from the top down by academics or politicians. In a traditional grammar textbook it would be incorrect but that's not how a lot of people (or even most people) talk or write anymore. It's just more convenient to have a neuter for both plural and single and 'they' has become a common de facto pronoun.

I don't like the idea of certain words having two or more different meanings.  Sure, in some cases it can be useful such as word games, jokes, art, etc. but something so basic and fundamental to a language such as pronouns should be clearly distinct from one another, and now would be a good time to make that happen since "they" is still not ingrained in everyday use.

Call people what they feel most comfortable being called. It's not rocket science and it's not a major inconvenience to you, so don't be a dick about it. Singular they has been used in English commonplace for hundreds of years.

I really don't understand why the issue of pronouns is so big a deal for people. What do you stand to lose from being polite even if you still refuse to accept the scientific consensus around gender?

As for calling people "he" or "she" or "it", that's another thing. If you have a cock you're a man, if not, you're technically a woman. If both.... well, is that even a thing? And if it's about a mental concept rather than the body, dang, my gender can be technically anything I see fit.

As for scientific consensus on that, they got lots of bs and propaganda too, but that's another subject. And what we're losing by "being polite" is grounds against that crap.

So, people talk like “they (he) is very tall, I couldnt tell from their (his) picture.” I haven’t heard of such a thing, not in movies, not in books, not in social media. Doesnt feel common at all.

No, unfortunately, things that surpass your oversimplification dont suddenly become “bs and propaganda” and a scientific consensus is not a blocker site.

Gender is also determined by hormones and brain chemistry, these are also facts about your body, not “mental concepts” and there are actual people who have reproductive organs of one gender and brain chemistry of the other in various degrees. So it is not binary, in a very physical sense. Evolution isnt some grand design where everything always goes according to plan, you have all sorts of anatomical, neurological, biological anomalies.

@artu

That was a given. And still, that could technically result in hundreds of different "genders" anyway. Even then, there are regular men with a more girly behavior and vice-versa, so what's the point, other than being biologically precise?

The actual issue though, is how this is used to push agendas. And yes, there are plenty of cases of just "mental concept" because of this.

I'm just saying it shouldn't be such a big deal. I know such people get harassed and all, but this is already becoming more like a cult, together with all the sexual preferences. Pffff, straight meaning you can be attracted to trans (this already goes against the whole thing that not only reproductive organs matter).

Well, of course, it shouldnt be a big deal. That’s why, the decent thing to do would be calling someone he, if he prefers he and she if she prefers she, instead of comparing it to calling someone “my master,” don’t you think?

I was just having a bit of fun back there with the master thing.
And I'm still holding to my opinion, although out of respect I would call a partially male/female person what they wish if they don't blow up for any "misgendering" and other things like this (basically, not making a cultist thing out of it).
