Yeah, you possibly can say that given that Putin expressed his nostalgia for the Soviet Union (or at least its territorial extent) on multiple occasions.

Why stop there then? Why not go back to pre-Soviet Russian imperialism which you can trace back to Petro the Great.

If you are going to take a date to determine when Russian expansionism STARTS, that date is not 1917. If you are linking the starting date through ideology, today’s invasion is not a communist one, if you’re linking it through Russian expansionism only, then, you have to go back even further.

Any of our regular HC members Ukrainians? I know we have some Eastern Europeans here. Hope you all stay safe if you're anywhere close to this disaster. Many images on the TV here are heartbreaking to watch.

nope, early 15th century, from about 1430. Ivan IV was just the one who finally broke off the extortion of Muscovy put by 6272828 different tatar khanates.

I tried avoiding writing anything here, but I can't any longer. Yes, I'm an American, but even if I can't do anything about what's going on over there, doesn't mean I don't care. I have neighbors that came from the Ukraine about 10 years ago. In fact, we have a community of Ukrainians living here. And like any small community, we kinda bind together and support each other during hard times. It doesn't matter where you're from or what color you are or whatever. Anyway, I asked one of my neighbors if they've been able to find out anything about some of their family members over there. They told me and my wife that their relatives over there are okay and safe for now. But that they may be thinking of crossing borders soon if things get worse, but for now all is okay considering the situation.
Physical Invasion of countries with tanks, soldiers and whatnot is something that will soon have to be a thing of the past with Social media and the Internet dominating the world these days. Information in the hands of everyday citizens will eliminate borders altogether in about 20 years. Future borders will be nothing more than an exise tax imposed by individual countries. You can't stop free speech and free thinking if everyone has the world in their hands via smartphones.

Ah, ok. Yep, sure. Expansionism is always coupled with PERSONS, though, isn't it? Ivan "the Terrible" (the one Kip mentioned), for example.

I’d say in the long term it can also be considered a “state policy” too, sometimes with stopgaps here and there. Old empires had to invade, since that was the engine of their economy. Nowadays, it’s done with treaties, sanctions, banking and more subtle ways, which is much preferable to direct conquest, of course.

That’s before the 2014 crisis, after that, all cards were on the table. Not joining NATO officially was a technicality at that point. I’m not saying Russia is doing good, go Ivan, go go, btw. Just saying I can understand how a lot of Russians think they were the ones being surrounded, it’s not unbelievable news to me.
Link
No. 2014 crisis is RUSSIA breaking Budapest Memorandium. BLATANTLY. You can't guarantee borders based on a government (which is what Russia claimed).
Russia is the aggressor since 2014 - note that their Crimea annexation hasn't been recognized. They were not surrounded. They just broke a treaty.
This guy had a pretty accurate prediction in 2015 based on the same premise.

Anyone got some legit info on how things are going right now? Putin says 0 Russian casualties, Ukraine says 4 500 Russian troops dead already. Both these numbers seems very absurd.

The mostly likely end scenario is a split Ukraine, problem is Kiev is in the middle. I can see them calling it quits taking all the territory east of it, both parties would be satisfied.

Yeah, balkanisation of ukraine will be completed. I do wonder if more of the regions would split, it would be hilarious if pro-Polish separatists spring up in Lwow. Polish liceheads would orgasm to death.

If Putin fails, China has made a strategic mistake not offering vocal moral support, as the majority is quite silent, even India refuses to condemn. Thus the wailing opinion lynch mobs.
And the globalists' job would be done.
