Tried both games, Master of Orion 2 and Galactic Civilisations 2.

Both are the kind of games that I like but Master of Orion is perhaps a little too repetive. Colonise, build, colonise, build, colonise, build...the planetary differences are almost none even when comparing poor radiated or rich terran. The end results just differ. Has too much useless micro management that you have to do but you always do it the same way! That makes the game boring after a while.

Wars and Battles are very good, logistics networks(HUGE YAY!), command network(done quite badly), directional shields...

Psilons are a pain in the ass if they get to evolve long enough btw. One shot kills to my ships. Luckily I usually had million to one ratio.

Galactic civilisations 2 has perhaps a little too complicated tech system and the planetary space system for buildings is annoying as hell but it works better than the unlimited space in MOO. Morality is a nice bonus. In the end Galactic civilisations is a little too simple to be fun for long.

Note : Stasis field at the end of your list of weapons RULE vs the Orion Guardian.  Keeps it from healing it's shields and repairing.  Make sure every one of your ships have it (and at the end of it's weapons list) and you can take it down with just about anything.

Oh yeah, and have gyro stabalizers (gets around the shields for direct damage).

Yes it does Wonders

And don't forget about Marines and Tractor Beam with Raid option you can destroy ship faster the with any other weapon  (sometimes) or damage and criple the core systems

JoonasTo i always wanted to play that game but didn't had the time and patcience to learn it. I always try to read the manual..... Maybe some day....

I normally do I don't want to under races multiply by my doorstep But i think i must rethink my strategy and use only those species that have greater bonus to Food, Industry or Research as specialised workers....

If I play a chrismatic race like Humans, I almost never kill off any.  Psilons go to research, the bugs to production, Sakkra to food production..their bonuses are too much help in those areas.  I will even shuttle population from my home planet to conquered planets and the ones that were on that conquered plantes to my home planet.  Make sure they are way outnumbered until 'assimilated' before moving more in however.  That way all the good tech combines with the good bonuses.

I am at a loss.  I can start as Sakkra and when I meet up with a race, even if Silicoid they have colonized so many planets it is sickening.  I have to edit stars with the editor JUST to have a fighting chance.  What the heck?

Show me you save game, and i will tell you your future...

It is my theory that the AI is learning as the game progress but the difference is that is very hard to play against him at first 2-3 times like he was super genius, when you win once it is turning in to all know AI

That will have to wait till I get home .

Since I know I can modify my planets to be a bit more friendly I've changed my 'custom' race.

Either Lithovore or Tolerant (10 points)
Poor Home World (-1)
Creative (6 points)
Negative Ground Combat (-3 (or is it -2) points)
Negative Spying (-2 or is it -3? points)
-population or nothing (-4 or 0)
If I get negative population I also get +1 production.

I think I need a new custom race tho .  Any suggestions?

Ok my usually and constant pick is:

- +2 Research
- Creative
- Subterranean
- Dictatorship
- -10 Spy
- -10 Ground Combat
- -20 Ship Defense
- -20 Ship Attack
- Large Home World (if don't use an special tool )

My game sets are currently:

*Hard
*Huge Galaxxy
*Average Galaxxy Age
*8 players (if you don't feel well with your skills try multiplayer Hot Seat mode and give the second race Omniscent, and you will see all, very usefull skill, and you will always have an ally)
*Pre-Warp
*Random Events
*Tactic combat
*Antarans

Red, Green, Yellow, White, and Blue color gives cool looking ships( If you didn't knew you can change how they look if you click design in planet (what to produce menu).

If you don't have good starting star system (at least 2-3 planets with Abundant Minerals) better start again or use a littlle tool( It is savegame editor but i mainly use it to edit the star map, by changing the postion of stars, the planet structure of the star systems, changin Black Holes into Star systems and so on... There is only one thing the languege used in this tool is German, but it is well made so you will learn what i what.)

For my scientific races the most crucial is the first steps of developmentso what to research first and next)

Tech I rarely have a problem with.  I usually am very far ahead of the other races.  Only thing it seems I do a bit different is at first I concentrate on getting an automated production going first.  That way I can build without moving creatures away from research.  If I need a quick build I either buy or then will move all from research.

Edit : Oh and I usually start out in average tech..so that may explain it. I usually build automated factory before research lab.

Edit 2 : Spys tho..they suck.  I can have dozens of defending spys and still get tech stolen left and right.

Use the spy trick if you see that enemy has send spys against you send one or two against him they AI spys will automaticaly withdraw.... So no more spying. and of course you have to chceck this every turn, so it annoying but it works for some time.

The best method to win is kill kill kill, and use your tech adancments... as advantage. don't worry that enenmy has more systems then you because it has probably less colonies then you....

I do also modify my tech depending on what race I use.

For instance Silicoid.  Once I have a factory and a research facility I go after Cloning.  With their low growth rate, this helps more then a lot of things.  Then I go back to my research tree.

For Psilons I deffinately go after research before factory.

Why I go after factory first most of the time.  In the early game things like housing, Trade Goods, and spys (so you don't have to mass build them later when tech is falling out of the sky and there are more important things to build) are very useful.  To build or benifit from them, you need production.   5 free production without taking your people from research (or food if you need it) may be small but it adds up.

Still no 5 on the tech tree would not be that bad, and research is always a good thing.  May have to change my research

Edit : Geesh could you imagine Sakkra with Cloning and 5 free production going to housing?  They would spread more like a virus then rabbits....
