Well I see right away the reason you lose.

NEVER pick Feudal.  It is an almost sure path to failure ESPECIALLY on Huge Galaxies.  The only way you would possibly be able to make up for it would be to trade/steal and capture ships for almost all technology which in the beginning is not that easy.  The computer spreads so damn quickly it's not funny plus they never have problems making ships.

I never play on anything but Impossible myself so perhaps I was hasty.  I guess on lower difficulties it can be done but it's not really a good path to choose.

The longer the game goes on usually the less useful being Feudal is.  Early on it's great for getting quick Battle Ships for conquest but goes down as your enemies get tech that make them easily able to take on your best ships easily.  That's what I do to the computer all the time when my 1 or 2 Battle ships take out his fleet of 12.

My solution is to play in DOSBox. (The screenshot issue happens when playing in Windows natively I find)

Just thought of another thing to keep in mind if you are customizing your Race and that is racial picks that should NOT be chosen together.

For Example:

Tolerant & Telepathic - If your just going to capture other colonies so easily then they would not receive the benefit of your races Tolerance.  Same could also be said for Telepathic and any Food, Production, Science, Gravity and Population bonus's really.

Some things that DO work with Telepathic would be:
Warlord - Every 2 colonies you take over gives command points for a Battleship
Cybernetic - The ship repair still works and that is a GREAT thing to have although the 1/2 food and production won't carry over to other races captured.
Unification Government - Really good as you don't have to worry about that long conversion process and the Food & Production bonus of this one DOES work for other races you capture.
Ship Offense & Defense - Carry over to ALL ships you build even the ships you build with captured colonists.  Not sure if it works with Captured ships though.

Anybody else have good 2 pick combos?

Planet based bonuses (Boni?) such as Rich, Large, Artifact etc are most effective on small maps. Though they can help you start off in the early game they tend to be less useful as you build up other worlds.

I'm sure a good chunk of people have experimented with Democratic and Creative because of the inherent research and trade bonus, plus it carries over to captured colonies. You have to give yourself a penalty somewhere though to get them both.

Truly I kind of like that as well.

The only problem is that on Impossible, which is the only difficulty I play, it truly is almost impossible to win with that unless you get really lucky with the random picks it allows.

Like certain times it will never allow you to get shield or none till level 7 or 10 so that you have to steal.

Other times it will not let you get any better armor till very late.

And almost the worst is when it gives you neither Research Labs OR Automated Factories.  If this happens on a Huge Galaxy your dead before you start really.  On Small Galaxies with good ship combat skills you might be able to survive as it is not as dependent on tech as Huge is.

Ok I HAVE tried this now and it IS doable on Impossible.  However you really need to have either SMALL or perhaps Med galaxy to make it feasible.  The more Races the better as well.

I played 3 times using SMALL, PRE WARP, 8 Players, IMPOSSIBLE.

I used the Psilons picture and customized my race the following ways:

Cybernetic
Telepathic
Unification
Warlord

Uncreative
Population -50%
Ground Combat -10%


This did me the best.

One of the Computer races I ran into early got a SUPER start.  They were Silicoids with Lithovore, Tolerant & Subteranean and only negative was Repulsive.  They get a system with 4 other planets than home, Small Gaia Abundant (16), Small Tundra Rich (11), Large Heavy G Barren Rich (20), Small Barren Poor Low G and this was on top of their homeworld of a Med Terran Abund (23).

Ah well beat them quite early for that insanely good system by just using 2 Cruisers to defeat and mind control them.

Actually finished that game really early by winning council vote.  I mean my vote alone was worth 11 out of 21 votes lol and I had taken out 3 other races and had non-aggression trade and research packs with the last 3.

OH by the way in the game above I did NOT get Research or Auto factories as my first choice in their fields.  For Auto I actually got the stupid Missile Base but stole those first then it changes to Auto.  Likewise for the Labs

Unification, telepathic, uncreative, repulsive, subterranean, and rich home world was my last one.
Unification is simply awesome for production and food.
Telepathic is the way to go. The amount of turns you save on captured planets with it is ridiculous.
Subterranean is always nice, more production, moeny and research not to mention late game diplomatic victory since everyone hates you.
Rich homeworld for faster start.

Yeah, if you don't get shields till later you have to steal them. Or else you're dead meat. Spying in general is very useful for them.

Labs and Auto factories are something you can't really live without, or you can, but it hurts.

If you get early shields/weapons, you'll almost always win by rushing out due to mind control but later in the game you're pretty much toast against psilons regardless of your military techs. Unless you've stolen everything they have of course.

WoW just started a new game using the following

Pre Warp, Small, 8 players, Avg Galaxy Age, Antarans (This is always on for me) and of course Impossible.

Race picture Mrrshans with

Cybernetic
Telepathic
Warlord
Charismatic
Large + Rich Home

Uncreative
Ship Offense & Defense -20%
Ground Combat -20%

First 3 races I ran into are Psilon, Human and Alkari.

Sakra is the 4th and they have the following

Population +100% (+6)
Tolerant (+10)
Subterranean (+6)
High Gravity (+6)
Food +1 (+4)
Large Home (+1)

Repulsive (-6)
Uncreative (-4)
Feudal (-4)
Espionage - 10% (-3)

Lol for those of you keeping count thats -17 Picks in penalties and +33 in Bonus's.  Human players have a Max of +20 Bonus if they get -10.

I think if they get a chance that they will expand super fast.

Psilon Race

Small Galaxy, Pre Warp, 8 players, Avg Galaxy, Antarans and IMPOSSIBLE.

Now I won this game by council vote at turn 151 I believe.  Score was in the 1200's.  only 2 other races left at that point and my vote alone was enough to win.

Also only 1 race was repulsive in the game and I didn't meet them until I had met all the other guys first.  Got Terraforming from a Hero quite early and ended up trading it to 6 of the races for different techs.  After that I just Demanded stuff from everyone.  I had Non-Aggression, Trade & Research Treaties with them all and was getting 10% Tribute from them as well lol.

Did not get Orion as my highest Tech at end game was like Class 3 Shields, Anti-matter drive, Battle Station, Merc Missiles type levels.

Really don't think I could have won this game if it had been a larger map though.
