Enlighten me please

Hello there fans of HoMM!
First of all i wanna say that i like this game very much, secondly i am a complete noob in on line gaming, but usually i just play for fun so i dont get offended when ppl call me noob, i am noob anyway
Ok so there it goes i wannted to ask you a few questions:
1.While browsing this forum i've noticed that ppl are saying that Inferno an Swamp (Fortress) does NOT suck...
i allways thought that these two castles suck REAL hard, can you specify what are the strong points of these castles
2.Is this game fair?I mean is there is any balance between castles, are they all equal?
Thanx in advance

Well, let me be the first to welcome you to the forum. I hope you like it here and I just know you'll find great info.
I must admit that new comers find it strange to see what other, more experience players have posted - me included. What you have to understand here is that most veterans will tell you that a might hero is better than a magic hero most of the time. (see below) The 2 "might" towns are Fortress (for defense) and Barbarian (attack).
After reading what others have posted, I have learned to play with Fortress and like it very much. You can do well with any castle, it's just that you need to know how to play with them. For fortress it would be to use as much defence as possible and take advantage of their building order (Build wyverns day 2 or 3). That will give you the best advantages. Never use a witch as main for the fortress; always use Tazar - expert armorer as soon as possible. Each castle has their own strenghs and to be sucessfull, u need to learn what they are to better play with them. The other thing with this game is Logistics. The faster you get around, the better your chances are of winning. As Fortress, you have eliminated swamp lands as slowing you down and you get to move more since it's your native terrain. It works also in you favor for the opposition: They will be slowed down and give you time to react before they get too close. And besides, everyone hates walking in the swamp terrain cause you don't move, so if you're playing multiplayer, chances are you won't get attacked first!

Following the same logic, an inferno town is high in magic so use a magic hero and get expert fire magic. Learn Armageddon and the game is yours. (Personally, I don't like Inferno all that much, but others will give you better advice)

That would be a judgment call. It depends. Only you hold the answer to this one and that answer will change with time, beleive me.

Just remember that most maps these guys play is fixed and they don't use Dimension Door, Fly or even start with heroes who have level 4 spells as specialties so the might heroes are bound to be better. Online gaming is very different than that of AI. You will have to change you ways of thinking and adapt new strategies that go hand in hand with the maps they play on (usually richer maps in witch you build creature dwellings before capitol)

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask
We are all here to learn and help each other.

Inferno: Efreet sultans, cerberi, demon farming, on XL maps with multiple inferno towns town gate rocks. Also, archdevils are the only L7s that can take out legions of slow creatures like dendroids or golems when you only have one. Don't try this trick in multi though, unless you really wanna piss yer opponent off
Fortress: Tazar is be teh rules. Lizard warriors don't suck nearly as much as many people think, mighty gorgons are the ultimate L7 slayers esp if you have teleport, chaos hydras are awesome with teleport too. Dragonflies have awesome speed and therefore are really, really useful. Also, if you happen to be besieged, the twohex moat is a nice bonus.

The game isn't perfectly ballanced, but that's not stopping people from having lots of fun with this game

Well, as far as I know, the Zone is quite popular, so you shouldn't have problems finding an opponent there

I think the zone is the best place to go. Everyone on the Tournaments play there, but there is also GameSpy.

For version and Patches, I don't know much but you can look through This thread

Take care,
Conan

Bring me Cpt. Solo *Jabba

Hey Solo, I am pretty new at this whole thing too...Single Player & Multiplayer. I must agree with Conan's statement that you will find many strategies here that will make you a better player.

Example: Im one of my first on-line multiplayer games, I won in 3 days on a random medium map, against one of my buds who has been playing for years. I got somewhat lucky, but I found that using the strategies from this Community helped me finish the job!

So, if ever you see me online, feel free to ask me to play. I would love to try out some of the new things that I learn here on a regular basis.

Another thing while browsing the forums i've notived experienced players are using word 'ToH' to describe some maps, what does ToH mean exactly?

Online players have allot of map options... some download maps, some modify, and some play game maps or random maps...  talk to some folks and you'll see quickly who prefers what types of maps and why...

(if ever you're looking to play noob vs noob, let me know...  I'm often on the zone.)

one thing you'll notice is the time differences...  depending on where you are, it's sometimes hard to get a game....

Preference of Maps

Solo,

Jebus already knows this, but I figured I would share it with you or anyone else who sees this thread: I prefer Random, Medium maps, with no Underground for my 1 vs 1 games. So far, I have only played 3 of these games though and my record is 2-1. The reason for this is because I have not been playing HoMM3 for long, so I don't know any of the Single Scenario maps or any of the ToH maps either.

I figure that Random Maps even-out the field a little and force you to alter your strategy every match. In this case, all of the tips that you find in Heroes Community will not always apply and you might actually have to think for yourself!!! Imagine that...not just following a walkthrough/manual/guide of "How to win at HoMM3". LOL! The tips in HC are great, so I suggest learning as many of them as possible, so that if ever you're in a Random game, you have more strategies at your disposal. Feel free to practise them against the computer, but as many members in HC will say, there is no AI substitute for a real person.

Solo,
you will notice however on the zone allot of members do not like random maps (especially if playing in a tournament).  Vets tend to customize some random maps or templates to make sure that the randomizer still balances everything out to make it fair (equality is the key).  Due to this, you'll see that the strategy that "us noobs" are used to, will not benefit you and you'll have to reajust quickly to the newer format....
Personally I like random maps too, medium with or without underground....  (I just make sure that both parties are sympathetic if the other player gets stuck do to unbalanced random map creators)

Also I've noticed alot of conditions to the games (especially in tourney's).  Stuff like no dimension door, fly, etc.., tend to advantage having a strong might hero instead of a magic one (this statement will get me in some hot water with vets i'm sure).

anyways... there's always some guys like us who just want to play (no matter your preference) and are pretty conforming to your style.

don't hesitate to ask for a game .....

OK very interesting fellows, i've even registered at ToH, played 1x1, but didnt have the time to finish it, so i surrendered and reported the los...
But what frightened me alittle bit is that guy statet some rules...Jebus allready mentioned about Demension doors, fly and etc. I thought "ok that sounds reasonable" then he sayed no heroes with Logistics spec!!!I allways play Dessa(StrongHold rocks IMHO)
He also said that no scrolls with 4-5th level spells, now THAT isnt fair, may stronghold has mage guild only to level 3, so where the heck am i suppose to get 4-5lvl spells?only from the scrolls, he said that its OK to build 4-5lvl guild mage...

Jebus where are you from?I mean what is your time zone i would love to play with you, my account in the zone is "SoloHoMM"

Both me and Jebus are from Canada. (New York time zone)
I replied because I too would like to play no rules with you

That example you gave is the prime example we where trying to tell you. You can see how it would be unfair to get a scroll of resurrect of chain lightning or something at the beginning, yet it is unfair for you because of mage guild level 3 max. You don't have to play with those guys, others (like Leo, Jebus and me) will play you no rules.

What time zone are you?

We could play in the morning (for us) depending on where you live.... we do that with Angelito and he is in Germany.

A N00b game lasts in general, on a medium map, 1 on 1, 2 hrs
