Chess Puzzles

here are some chess puzzles that i have found

this is one that my brother just tried on me and i found it very difficult and gave up quickly.

that will be the first puzzle to solve

Puzzle One

i will give you the setup of a board. u must achieve this exact setup within 4 moves. that is white moves 4 times and black moves 4 times. no more, no less. the only other rule is that all the moves must be legitimate. here is the setup

Valeriy: QP applied for a good thread and for keeping it going

nice try but no cigar

it is possible, and the puzzle is to do it in 4 moves. it is easy to get it in 3 moves and 5 moves but u must get the board position in 4 moves. it is possible, i have seen the solution

if u think about it for some time u will realise something. this u can use to figure the puzzle out. i do not think that u have found this yet

fast facts: this took gary kasparov several minutes

keep trying guys

Do you have to make the moves alternating? Meaning black moves then white moves, then black moves, then white moves? Or can you do it in any random order of white moving and black moving?

Hehe, that's what I came up with after 20 mins of thinking "The ONLY other rule" made me think that there could be a trick to it I got a solution where black moves 2 times in a row followed by white moving 2 times in a row.

Ok, by elimination the only piece that can eat the black pawn is the white bishop.
There are 2 ways the two black pawns can be where they are now:
1) C and E just move forward (2 moves), in that case white bishop has to eat D pawn and another black piece has to eat the bishop and come back (2 more moves). There are 2 possibilities for the white bishop to eat the black pawn:
1a) Bxd5 - that requires 1 more move, which is bad
1b) Bxd7 - would be nice IF the white bishop could reach that spot, however by the time the white bishop can get there, that spot is already blocked by the 2 black pawns.
2) one of them is a front pawn that captured the white bishop.
2a) Bxe6 or bxc6 - requires exactly 3 pawn moves and eliminates the possibility of another black piece moving back and forth
2b) Bxc4 - would be nice IF black had 2 turns in a row, but as he said that is not allowed.

Did I exaust all valid possibilities?

The only other thing I can think of is that white and black did not have the standard lineup in the beginning (i.e. the black knight was in front, or smth like that.)

Well I'm not wasting my time on this thread anymore if you won't tell us some sort of hint. It's not possible as far as I'm concerned.

no its not that

the key thing that u should have figured out by now is that black must move a piece out and then back into its original position. otherwise black needs more than 4 moves to get to the shown position.

that is as far as i got with this puzzle

there is a big hint that i just gave u, hopefully it puts u on the right track

I already realized this. The problem is that it's not possible. I noticed this after like 5 seconds. The issue at hand is that when the one piece moves to and then back to its original position it must take the bishop. However before that the bishop must take a pawn first.

The problem is that if a pawn takes the bishop, then black must move a pawn three times making it impossible to move a piece back and forth. So bishop must take center pawn. But it can only do that on the third move. This means that black must move out the c and e pawns on the first two moves, blocking off the pawn at d7 from the bishop.

ahhh, now u are thinking. the bold part is key, what is in bold is all possible. there is a piece that can move back and forth and take the bishop at the same time

how is that possible?
it'll take 3 moves for the bishop, and in that time both pawns will have blocked the d pawn from being taken. if they werent ther the queen could take and move back...
but the pawns just ruin the whole thing

For f**k's sake!!! Are you even reading our posts? I've described this whole thing in details including that "important piece of info" that we "need to realize". FYI, most of us "realized" it after 5 seconds of thinking, and I think this fact's "importance" is not any more important as realizing that pawns move forward, that white moves first, and that this game is called chess. I've even described every possible combination, so here it goes again (I removed the other 3 possibilities except for the double move part):
Quote:
Ok, by elimination the only piece that can eat the black pawn is the white bishop.

I have a strong feeling that you are just wasting our time, so I won't bother thinking any more.

i dont exactly now what to say to these theories of yours
1) true but that isnt not the way to get into this position so thats not it
1b) Bxd7, its possible

i am being very general because i feel that clues now will make the puzzle very easy.

i dont know what more to say. if u guys give up then say so, if u all give up then i will reveal the answer

ok then

the solution is

(1)pawn to e4, pawn to e6
(2)bishop to b5, king to e7
(3)bishop takes pawn on d7, pawn moves to c6
(4)bishop to e8, king takes bishop

that is the solution, u had to move the king

i will post a new puzzle soon. that is a checkmate kinda one
