I use a simple screen capture to get the sprites, which usually takes me a few minutes per sprite (I'm not very good at timing it ). Once I think I have all of them I erase the backgrounds with tools from Adobe Photoshop and trim and prepare them for transparency in MS Paint, taking around half a minute for each one. After they're animation-ready I arrange them into Animagic, align them with each other, and figure out by trial and error about how much the general frame rate should be.
Altogether, I don't think it's usually much more than 10 to 20 minutes per (simple) animation. Heroes III sprites take a bit longer than Heroes II sprites.
As for difficulty, it's not exactly a skill-intensive task nor does it take any more patience than I have, if any.

Korejora,
That animation is exactly what I had in mind. It's perfect. Great job!
The question remains . . . would Valeriy allow the saluting crusader as an avatar?

If we have a decent number of the animated HOMM avatars(3 seconds seeming to be the best pause time) then I'm happy to go ahead with this feature of making them available to people with a certain amount of stars. Then it will be a new class of avatar with higher kilobyte size allowance. I tried some optimizing on Korejora's avatars and was able to slice another 2kb or so off, making them around 5-6kb, which isn't too bad for special avatars.
So then it's up to Korejora's generous contribution. And anyone else who can help out making them.
Five red stars or five yellow stars? I think associating such a bonus with yellow stars will create a whole lot of spam. Associating it with red could improve quality, but then five red stars might be a bit too exclusive, we don't have to go by stars, instead we can select a QP amount which allows it.

The phoenix looks great! The rest...I dunno, they look like they have an itch or a tic or something. IMHO, the flying sprite is more dynamic and appealing than the standing one. (Maybe it's the Superman pose.) The mouse-overs are more subtle, though.
Nice work catching and re-assembling the animations, Korejora.

Thanks, Khaelo!
I wish they were mouseovers! I feel silly, sitting in front of the screen and waiting for them to do their little itch-dance, and then I often hit the capture key half a second too late anyway. There's no way to activate it or even predict it.
Come to think of it, the moving sprites would be faster to get than the standing ones because I could just go into each creature's info-screen, where it would perpetuate all the sprites I need, instead of the aforementioned crouch-and-pounce method of sprite grabbing. Maybe there should be a poll on 'Which do you think is more attractive / less distracting' between the moving and standing ones?
As for the pheonix, I agree; it looks a bit more dignified. I didn't include its idle movement because it's a big enough file already with just the glowing. (And because it was less work. )

Yep, a poll with a couple of samples would be good.

Here's a flying gargoyle and a (sketchy) walking skeleton:
I did those on Jasc Paint Shop Pro + MS GIF Animator. PSP's "background eraser tool" requires a PhD to operate. In any case, for reference, walkers seem to be trickier than fliers. Like the sprite, the gargoyle has only three distinct frames. The skeleton has six, and I've captured seven so far for the halfling.
My full-time job starts tomorrow, so I can't spend lots of time on each critter. If I figure out how to make PSP erase backgrounds quickly and nicely, I can contribute more animations. Otherwise, they're too much trouble.
Edit: And it appears that the transparency needs work too. Between the two programs, that should be easy to fix.

Khaelo, I don't want to be party pooper but seeing those avatars on a regular basis I think would drive me quite mad.

Heh! You guys have changed your opinion back and forth already. Moving animations = too annoying. Itching animations = too boring. Moving animations = too annoying
I think itching is the way to go and we need a poll with a couple of samples of each.

Sorry I put this off a bit; my cousins came visiting and I don't see them very often.
Turns out in the land of the living dead there are some more standing sprites that don't look like they have fleas! Though I think the lich might have to go to the bathroom or something.
Now that dog looks angry, but you can bet he doesn't have fleas! And here's the bat to go with the vampire, at its original speed and slowed down.
Next up, the Heroes III sprites took a lot longer to make than I expected, but I think they're nicer, too.
Unfortunately, they're also bigger.

How come I can't see the animations? I wanna see them! My security setting in IE6 is set to medium, I don't know what else it could be. I've never seen ANY animations at HC.
Anyway, a new request.
How about sortable forum index? Like maybe click on column title to sort by start date, replies, view count, QP awards, etc.

True, they are bigger
Edit: Paradoxically, with resedit and defview, heroes 3 gifs take much less time. I did this in 3 min.
