Well, I played it and i mean the same as Kesnar. H5 sucked. Well, with TotE, it got tons better, but the only superior with HoMM 5 is the graphic.
Heroes 1: 3 out of 5
It's a pretty fun game, and even the graphics are cool, even they are cartoonish.
Heroes 2: 4 out of 5
Much funner than Heroes 1. Two new races and a campaign where you chose between Roland and Archibald.
Heroes 3: 5 out of 5
It was the best game i'd played in long time when i bought it. Great campaigns, but I didn't actually understand that shadow of death was before RoE before i played it the second time.
Heroes 4: 4,5 out of 5
First thing i noticed with HoMM 4 was no Cutscenes in the campaigns, and i didn't played this game much, becouse i thought it was bad.
Later I did understand that this was the best game of them all, but i give it only 4,5 becouse of some "not that good" expansions.
Heroes 5: 3 out of 5
As i mentioned earlier, Vanilla HoMM 5 was pretty bad, but with TotE it is much better. A good thing was the easy modding. Also, one of the bad things was that they completly scrapped the old universe, but they kept some references.
This is not all the reasons, only some minor ones.
Thanks to ubisoft that revived the HoMM series

Hi,
First I want to say I love this game. I like the third too, but as someone said earlier, after playing the fourth you realize the third lacks some nice features(hotkeys?).
I just found out I should try playing some online with my friends and I've tried almost everything to play over the internet (GameRanger, Hamachi, Gamespy, Hell's Kitchen and Tunngle) and nothing works I have added all the ports from findports.com. I am located behind to routers. One(Speedtouch 546v6) connects to internet and the other(WRT-54Gl) connects to it. I connect to the second one. I have to add all the ports on both routers since I think my ISP is hindering me from opening all the ports on the first router... Anyway I have Vista X86 and the rest of the specs are sufficient enough to play HoMM IV. If anyone think they could help me I would gladly post more info, but I'm trying not to make this post too long :/
I would love to play online with you if I could

I have a hard time understanding why people always say that Heroes 1 started the series. It was the first one in the Heroes of Might and Magic series, but most people should know that King's Bounty was the one that started it. King's Bounty was made by the same people that made Heroes (New World Computing). Even tough, King's Bounty was remade for the PS2 and renamed "Heroes of Might and Magic: Quest for the Dragon Bone Staff".

Yeah but they could have created a sequel to Kings Bounty instantly instead for the heroes games, right?

Yeah, good point, but saying that the HoMM series started it is wrong if you get what I mean. A new sequel to King's Bounty was released not so long ago. It was real-time so that kinda sucked, but if it had been more like HoMM it might've been cool. I don't really like the 3D graphics though.

KB: The Legend isn't real time, so far as I've played it. You make a nice point, but KB is more like Heroes Zero than anything else. It may be turn-based with armies of creatures and gold, but otherwise it's not much like HoMM1.

It's been some time since I played the demo, but I seem to remember that it was real-time on the map. The battles were kept turn-based. Anyway, I guess since you've played it recently then you're the one that's most likely correct

I am no HOMM veteran so I can't speak for certain things. But I'll say what I think. I have not played much of the campaigns so I can't say if they are good or not. Also I am poor at telling balance in games.
Heroes 1
Havn't played much. Seems like a little brother of Heroes 2. Good for it's time I suppose. But why are the black dragons purple??
Heroes 2
The first game I played. I have played it alot. A fun game. Simply an improvement over Heroes 1.
- A bit cartoony graphics and unit design but ok for it's time such.
- Just nice improvements from previous game.
- Stupid to not have tool tips about units abilities.
- Why can you only carry 5 units when there are 6 tiers?
- So nice music. You just can't forget the happy feel of the grass terrain!. Or the sad one of the dirt. The snow was so... pretty somehow.
- For some reason I always though the air elementals was the most powerful of all elementals, since they seemed to be that rarest unit in the game.
Heroes 3
Took heroes 2 and made it better in probably everyway even more than H2 did to H1.
- Good graphical update with far more serious style.
- Almost perfect choice and design on factions. Units and towns are all pretty. The towns are so pretty you want to really look at them and you find all units just soo cool and pretty. Great work.
- Be able to choose what hero to start with and that all heroes have a speciality! Great thing. Even starting bonus.
- 1 extra tier! And possibility to finnaly carry all tiers on a hero.
- Nice with all extra stuff simply like underworld, quest "huts" and everything.
- Don't know about the expansion. People blame it for conflux being too strong.
Heroes 4
A failure. The developers ran out of time. A few good things but overl all just uniattractive. Takes effort even to just try to enjoy.
- Fewer factions wtf?
- Fewer units. 7 as in Heroes 3 was fine.
- Inferno and necropolis fused together, awful.
- Unablitiy to choose starting hero wtf?
- A freakin out-of-place venom spawn for the death faction. The idea of it and it's abilities could be interresting but it shouldn't be in the death faction!
- Awful graphic style. Awful unit and faction design. The painted style portraits of Heroes 2 looks way better than those ugly things in Heroes 4. Just look at that fairy dragon, it looks like a duck. The earth elemetals looks like something out of a toy store. Some animations has way too few frames. The imps digging sulfur out of the ground on the map looks like it has 4 frams or such, no excuse possible. This is perhaps the biggest flaw everything looks so painfully ugly, both in quality and design wice.
- Interresting to make heroes more active in battles.
- Many new interresting unit and artifact abilities.
- Tool tips! Yes finnaly we don't have to f**king guess what an ability does. f*ck I hate when info is hidden in games.
- Nice thing to have hero skills in cathegories like scouting and such.
- Some nice new spells, and very nice with the idea of units casting spells.
- Lack of upgrades is questionable. I liked the idea of choosing between units.
- Awful music in towns, maybe on map as well I don't remember.
- A friend of mine told me the balance went to hell.
Heroes 5
Only played the demo so far but red a littl about it on the net and checked the factions.
- Felt like it ignored Heroes 4 and went back to the Heroes 3 style in many ways. Good thing.
- Back with 7 tiers and more factions if I'm not wrong. Factions were nice designed again. Expect the wizard equalent, why did they turn to desert style?? The Heroes 3 winter was perfect.
- Lack of tooltips agian. We have to check the manual or net to see what unit abilities does. FFS!
- Strange graphics. A mix of cartoon style and Heroes 3. Some units are nicely doesigned (may need a little weaks) like the devil and cavalier. Others looks just silly ( imps ) or butt ugly ( djinns/genies ). I love the hell horses. Perhaps the prettiest unit in the game.
- 3d graphics might upset a hell lot of people for me it was just a nice thing. With nice camera freedom too.
- Still no exist menu in battle?? Do I have to finnish a battle to quit the game?? If I'm not wrong it was possible in Heroes 4.
- No quick combat asking for weak monsters to fight like in Heroes 4.
- Expansions seems great with 2 new factions and adding 1 upgrade option for all units.
- Towns still not as pretty as in Heroes 3.

I've only ever played HOMM3 & 4, unless I count a few hours with someone else's King's Bounty. I really liked 3 and, at first, I was disappointed with 4 until I went back to 3 and realised how much I missed 4's magic system.
My main objection to 4 is having the market place always available, which seem to me to be a big cheat.
Regrettably, with OS updates, I can no longer play HOMM3 anyway.

You can't? I'm able to play all the heroes games on my Vista 32-bit SP1 (Yes, even the first ), but I guess you have 64-bit then...
Anyway, poor topic starter His thread turned out to something a lot more different than he intended it to be :S
Can people quit posting wheter they like Heroes IV or not now? It's impossible that everyone will have the same opinion.
In short, Heroes 3 and before is for people that like to use more time on each map and take their time on each turn, while Heroes IV players like the maps to get finished quick and level grind their heroes fast in the beginning and also give more attention to the heroes than creatures. Heroes III is more about the Creatures of Might and Magic.
