i vote for death magic!
mass haste everyone is so fond of is easily matched by mass slow.
same for endurance,bless,righteous might (vulnerability,weakness,suffering)
favorite spells:
mass confusion (on expert) - totaly overlooked and broken IMO
its like all your creatures gains no retaliation ability and the enemies shooters are useless from now on.
frenzy, blind, puppet master - super great spells that can easily turn the battle.
i easily won battles of extremly diffrent odds with puppet master/frenzy. (using the enemy stacks against himself is just crazy!)
note on destructive magic:
with abilities like master of storms/cold the spells are much better
the stun effect of the lightning bolt for example is awesome and overlooked by many - your hero can keep using it on an enemy stack prenting it from doing ANYTHING (iniative of the target keeps decreasing due to stun effect)
still death magic is best.

I vote for Destructive Magic.
All other spells including advanture spells are less effective than their H3 counterparts, only Destructive Magic remains as strong.
Slow doesn't reduce speed, Haste doesn't increase speed...
Summon Elements? The amount of summoned elements is much fewer.
Animate Dead? Forget it, an overpowered low-level spell.
Bless/Curse is not as strong as those in H3.
There's no Prayer in H5.
There's no Cure in H5, so you have to get Resurrection/Animate Dead.
Berserk is nerfed.
Titan's lightning Bolt is absent.
Town Portal, Instant Travel, Vessel of Shalassa, no Fly ...

Would you mind giving arguments for all those ? =)
And what do you mean with Titan's Lightning Bolt?

Err, Titans can still shoot...
And if I'm not mistaken, Berserk is acually powered up... it didn't last 2 turns on any fire magic proficiency level like it does now with expert Dark magic.
And Fly and Town Portal were totally overpowered in H3, I'm happy they're either nerfed or absent.

Titan's Lightning Bolt wasn't even a normal spell in HOMM3.
If you get all 4 pieces of the Titan artifacts (forgot the names), you can make an artifact that gives you the spell. The hero can cast it for 0MP for 600 points of damage.

Seems that each school's usefulness depends upon hero type and its effectiveness at any given time. For instance Destructive is good to have
at the beginning but less useful later on.You can still decimate stacks but won't help you much to defeat a large army with buffs/debuffs.Spell points diminish fast unless you have wizardAnd having irresistible magic with warlock reduces the armageddon potential when fighting resistant opponents.Rangers can use better skills too due to sp
power deficiency.Summoning works better later on(summon elementals while
useful at first can be countered by targeting the caster's initial army,Arcane armor would be wasted on a weak stack just as phantom forces, etc)plus there is a 50-50 chance to get a so-so spell(firewall, earthquake, wasp swarm, arcane armor).Summon phoenix is great but hard to have early and I prefer an army with good stats to some summons unless my hero is very magic efficient. While Light is dwarfed by Destructive at first it can make wonders later.Doesn't require much spellpower so it is good for Sylvan and Haven(Academy can practically abuse resurrection spell) who use magic as a supplement to their might(buffing, dispelling).Cannot be resisted too Only word of light seems a bit wanting. And Dark seems to work anytime especially with mass decay in the beginning.Cursing seems to be more effective than buffing for non-expert divine strength and weakness, confusion and deflect missile or at least equal for other light spells.Has nice endgame spells too(frenzy difficult to counter,blind-just hope opponent hasn't Light magic with cleansing-,puppet master-check when it is less likely that opponent plays before cursed stack-) but they can be resisted. And Dark oriented heroes aren't likely to be able to counter other Dark ones
Decision:I rather prefer Dark for fun's sake as well as its usefulness!

Dark Magic
1st Dark Magic spells r cool even great but that depends on what faction u playing with Dark Magics r great for Necropils Because their castle gets it spells and when u get master of curses ur curses will be the most marvelous spells u can ever have.
Summoining Magic is great for Necropils cause it powers up the Raise Dead Spell And when u get Master Of Life ability It will be even better
Destructive magics r also good But when u play with dungeon only cause they increase dmg too much.

Whoa there!Obsolete?Any magic school with 5 level spells that can easily take down 5 angels should be respected. And considering that destructive seems to work best with wizards(library) and warlocks think of the possible combos;mark of the wizard, empowered spells, warlock's luck etc.Coming face to face with an army of eg 40 archangels and company doesn't happen every day.Not unless you play TOO defensively anyway.

H3 Berserk is an area-effect spell, which makes it great (remember 'Dragon Slayer' campaign that you face kilos of Naga-Queens?).
I agree Fly is a little overpowered IF you can get it, but that's what makes Tower/Acadamy rock!
H3 Town Portal is overpowered? Never manage to see it. Actually, I find H5 Town Portal nearly useless (believe me or not, you seldom wish to go to the Nearest town, while Summon Creature is mush useful instead).

I know. What I mean is H5 lacks Creative spells (except Summon Creature). H3 Titan's Lightning Bolt is a very interesting spell indeed --- good damage at no cost.

It's good that tp is much weaker. Town portal in h3 was broken and it spoiled the fun (So good that WoG gave the opportunity to ban it)

Heroes V has good balance in spells
Every Magic Scoll is useful in H5. Summons: Raise Dead, Phantom Forces, Summon Phoenix. Light: Teleportation, Recurrection. Destructive: Meteor Shower, Implosion. Dark: Frenzy, Puppet Master. Adventure: Summon Creatures, Instant Travel, Town Portal. Some are little better than the others but remember the Heroes III spells? Expert Earth and Expert Air and spells Town Portal and Dimension Door. That's insane! Combat spells like Expert Berzerk and Expert Implosion was also overpowered. H5 is good balanced in most parts imo.

Amen to that. The game without Expert Town Portal is a total bore, because you waste way too much time riding back and forth and back and forth and back and ....
Blaaaaaaaah.
Bring back expert Town Portal, or at least make it an option in game. Powerfull - yes. But opening for 10 times as much gameplay, which also counts for something!!!

Quote: Just a note about puppet master - it reduces the initiative of the controlled stack considerably. In that time the opponent can cast any offensive spell - like fireball or stone spikes - on puppeted stack thereby removing the spell. Also any kind of poison or decay will remove puppet master. I think the spell is a bit overrated and not that powerful when you are playing with a skilled human opponent.
even against skilled human player he will have to cast an offensive spell on his own units making him waiste his turn and hurting his own creatures.
i do not think puppet master is overated at all - its one of the only spells (together with frenzy - both death magic) that allows you to use the opponets strength against himself.
since no other magic school let you do that death magic will always be number 1 (at least on my list)

Puppet master is ok to bind the opponent spellcasting, but that's it. If he has sorcery he can even become better than you. If you want to bind him all the time that would mean that you have a lot of SP/K, therefore less A/D, so he is most likely superior in that aspect. Also, sylvan and haven for the least can easily dispell puppet master. It's not bad, but it isn't one of the best.
