I go for Light magic, because it is not as dependent on spellpower, comparing to other magic schools. Also, all the spells are generally useful, be it the damaging ones like DV and WoL, or the buffing spells like Divine Strength, Endurance and Righteous Might, not to mention tactical spells like Teleportation, Resurrection and Regeneration.
Dark Magic comes a close second. It is always good to curse the enemy, however, some spells are ineffective against undead or mechanical units, so that will take a dip there.
Summoning Magic, while seemingly the weakest, can be useful tactically, such as getting weak shooters to shoot arcane crystal and cause more damage. Some of the summoning spells do not really require a lot of spellpower, so even might heroes can have some use for them, though summoning magic heroes should get another magic school to complement, because the spells are not as generic-usage as those of other schools.
Despite the potential insane damage that destructive magic can give, I rank it the lowest, because even though it seems easy to use (just choose target, click to cast, nto a lot of thinking), it has just too many counters against it, be it the damage-reducing artifacts or abilities that reduce damage (and one of them, sap magic, is under destructive magic, kind of odd), and also its effectiveness decreases as the enemy troops increase in numbers, by then the destructive spells would probably be more tickling than hurting.

I sooo like destructive magic because their magic are direct damage and area effects like meteor shower, but why lava dragon affected by armaggedon? Lava dragon is immunne to fire spells

Yeah, Destructive and Dark are surely fun to play, but my favorite school is...
Light Magic.
IMHO Dark&Light are the best, and I'm more the buff type.

But.. I'd still vote for light magic. Mass bless was always the most useful spell in the game.
Mass Bless (aka. Divine Strength), Mass Haste and Ressurection - what can I say? Light magic beats everything hands down. A second would be Dark Magic, for having Mass Slow and Mass Curse. Destructive magic is useful, but in late game, that will not really be very important - you simply will never get the spellpower required to make a difference in really large-scale battles. And of course, Summoning Magic just plain sucks ... sorry ... except, perhaps, if you play necro.
Light magic, of course! You protect you units from magics and ranged attacks while improve attack, defense, initiative, heal your units, and sometimes kill some undead and demons.
The second place is... Destructive! it is very... ah... destructive!
third place: Dark magic. very useful, less than light, of course, and less funny as destrictive!
Summoning is the worst! as i dont like necromancers... and as the unic very useful spell - for necros - is rise dead...

rather depends on the hero. Destructive and Summoning are only good with high spellpower, Light and Dark are less dependant as many spells only use it for duration.
And of course, the latter two work best for/against large armies while the first two stand on their own and can be highly useful for creeping.
Overall I consider Dark the strongest (Mass Debuffs plus PM/Frenzy) and Summoning the most interesting to use, thanks to the new spells introduced in TotE. Blade Barrier to protect your real troops, Phoenix, Elementals and Fire Trap to decimate the opponent, sometimes Wasp Swarm to delay a dangerous stack. If only the Hive didn't take an eternity to finish it's turn...

I'm torn between Summoning and Destructive but I voted Destructive because in most of the cases it is more usefull then summoning, but summoning is harder to avoid.

Destructive is great early game, and ok mid game, but looses a lot of potentcy late game. Just doesn't scale well. When I play Stronghold, I like when I see Destructive Magic used against me (beats facing Dark any day).
The other three it depends on which towns you play.

For me it was pretty much a tie between dark and light. Those two are just awesome as a compination cause there is nothing like being inferno, mass haste your own creatures then mass slowing your enemies before adding more mass buffs on yourself and de-buffs on your enemies.
And when your done buffing/debuffing: Curse of the netherworld and ressurection is FTW. In the end I voted dark magic.

I voted for summoning. Surely, light magic is the best and most boring. Dark is very good, destructive extremely easy.
Summoning is my favourite, but its hard to use it, very seldom that I may even think about to learn it with the exception of necro.

Dark Magic can radically change the outcome of a battle (Frenzy and Mass Confusion are my favourite spells).

I very much like Destructive, but only in the hands of Warlocks. If I play other factions I try to get different schools.
Overall, I like Summoning the most.

Summoning is... it's only useful with necro, other heroes just don't specialize in this school, I mean summoning+dark+necromancy=cool! but summoning+anything else= If ur with knigh, best is dark&light, warlocks of course are with destructive, this is a MUST!! necros are with dark and summoning(every other combination is for the necromancers), not sure for the mages, but I guess destructive fits... and the elves... I rarely play with them not that they're bad faction, no, not at all... and the orcs - as everyone knows they are specialists in magic
Edit: sry for the long thread

Summoning can be useful for any faction, though some spells need a lot of spellpower to be effective (Elementals, Phoenix). But those that lack it can just spam Phantom Forces and maybe a Blade Barrier for creeping.
I also like Rain of Arrow Wasp Swarm with Dirael.
The only barrier is the low chance to get the skill to begin with for many factions. And of course the risk of not getting the spell you wanted the most in your guild but which type of Magic doesn't...

Hey, I didn't write anything about academy/fortress/sylvan, only that I don't play them so I don't know their schools But now when I think I remember how I summoned ############ fire elementals with Zehir, or a Phoenix with #### dmg
