Well unfortunately the guy I remember giving it to me can't remember a thing about it . He did give me another one though, see below...
Firstly, a few no-questions-needed `brainteasers` to warm you up:
A man pushes his car to a hotel, and immediately knows he is bankrupt. How?
Alice and Bob are lying dead on the floor, with a smashed bowl and a pool of water nearby. What happened?
Logic puzzle - name the engineer
A train goes between Chicago and New York. The brakeman, the fireman and the engineer are named Smith, Jones and Brown. (The names are not necessarily in order). There are also three passengers named Mr. Smith, Mr. Jones and Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown lives in New York. The brakeman lives halfway between New York and Chicago. Mr. Jones earns exactly $20,000 per year. Smith beat the fireman at their last game of golf. The passenger who lives in Chicago has the same name as the brakeman. The brakeman's next door neighbour is a passenger on this train and earns exactly three times as much as the brakeman. What is the name of the engineer?
And now for the proper riddle:
A man, Ben, is sitting on a bench in a railway station and picks up a copy of the day's newspaper. The headline is, "Death at sea". Apparently someone on a boat to Norway from the UK had jumped off the side (call this person Ashley). Although the newspaper says the person who died committed suicide, Ben strongly suspects it was a murder (call the murderer Charlie). How does he know?
So Charlie murdered Ashley, how does Ben know?
Small hint if you want it (look at the url it links to)
Hope this isn't too easy or too hard

Right on both of those Alc! Well done
Answers will be "no", "yes", "irrelevant", or "redefine the question"
Did he know the man? Redefine the question, "know" is too vague
Is the occupation of either man relevant? Yes
Are there any pictures in the newspaper? Irrelevant
Is the destination relevant? Or the starting location? No
Has the man been on the same ferry himself previously? Irrelevant

Hmm, seems to be too many irrelevants, maybe I'd better try to use yes and no more often...
In which case, I doubt they were friends or relatives; they certainly don't need to be for the puzzle to work, and if they did know each other then the puzzle would make less sense.
Let's give these people names. See first post.

Say hello to Bob the newspaper-reader, Charlie the murderer and Ashley the person who died. Hopefully this might make it a little easier to refer to them...
Note: Ashley and Charlie are names purposefully chosen to be androgynous
Summary:
Is the occupation of any of the characters relevant? Yes
Are there any pictures in the newspaper? Irrelevant
Is the destination relevant? Or the starting location? No
Has Ben been on the same ferry himself previously? Irrelevant
Was Ben related to Charlie or Ashley? Irrelevant
Did Ben work with either Charlie or Ashley (as collegues)? Irrelevant
Were any of them friends with each other? Irrelevant
Did Ben work in the police? No

Here's what I got:
Mr Brown lives in New York
Mr Jones lives halfway between New York and Chicago
Mr Smith lives in Chicago
The brakeman lives halfway between New York and Chicago and his name is Smith
The fireman lives in Chicago
The engineer lives in New York
So, the engineer could be either Jones or Brown, but I guess there aren't two Mr. Browns in New York, so I'll go for Jones
And a new question for the riddle:
Was Charlie angry at Ashley and wanted to kill her?

ZombieLord - sorry, wrong answer! I really like this puzzle - I wonder if anyone can come up with the right solution? I'd be very impressed, since I couldn't get it when I was given it, and I thought about it for ages.... But I have come across someone who was able to answer it.

Nice work to the both of you!
You are right Lith that Ben planned it for them - more specifically, he sold the tickets to Charlie - who bought a return for himself, and a single for his wife. Ben knew from the surname given in the article that the person who died was the wife of the customer who bought this odd pair of tickets, and hence suspected murder.
And FoG has noticed one of the more clever parts of the logic question!
Answer to the Bob and Alice one (we really need a better way of hiding hints on this forum).

"Chris meets Steve in a hotel bar. After a heated discussion on a specific topic, they leave the bar together, heading upstairs. Halfway up the stairs, Steve clutches his chest, then punches Chris in the face."
What was Steve's occupation? Why did he punch Chris?
