Nothing replaced it. The Dark Magic tree for Necromancers now look like that:
Master of Curses
Master of Mind
Master of Pain
---[ + Dark Revelation (Enlightenment) ]---> Corrupted Soil
Corrupted Soil is the only advanced ability, and it requires neither of the 3 basic "Master of" abilities. It still requires Dark Revelation though, as before.
This means that you can now reach the necro ultimate 4 levels sooner (not 2 like I've read somewhere), because in the Dark Magic sector, you only need Basic Dark Magic and Corrupted Soil (2 levels), instead of:
Expert Dark Magic, Master of Curses, Mark of the Necromancer and Corrupted Soil (6 levels).

Interesting. Does look like someone did not consider all the implications of doing that change.

I didn't really expect them too. The ultimates were already a mess and Ubival never showed to care about rebalancing them. I recall the excuse that they were SUPPOSED to be difficult to get...

Out of respect for the work done here by VokialBG, Alcibiades and Fiur (even if I never got his excel app to work on FF), here's the draft of the new Necromancy section in the upcoming 2.1 manual:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/game_manuals.shtml
I'm posting it here to see what you think, and be able to improve it before release. Keep in mind that there are obvious format constraints (page size issue), and that I want to make the info the most accessible to more casual players. Hardcore fans will have to do some calculations anyway.
Edit: link removed, since 2.1 manuals are available now.

For a manual I don't think you need to say more. The complex calculations and strategies are for the players to find out.
Looks good, nice job guys!

Thanx for the consideration, Sfidanza!
I looked at it, and I will say that I believe that you did the right choice about cutting the amount of information low, in order not to overwhelm the reader. I have my doubts whether the number conversion chart containing only numbers at basic level will be very usefull (because how often do you have only basic skill), but including all the numbers for various skill combos obviously became too much information. Maybe one should just have left out those numbers completely - or saved them for a table for the "advanced" user including the full range. That being said, it's fairly easy to overview as it is now, so would have no hescitation to give it a .

The idea is that Basic Necromancy is 20%. If you're Expert (40%), you just have to multiply by 2.

I know. But since Necromancy percentages come as everything between 20
% and 100 %, maybe it would be better to list the number for 10 % to make multiplication easier? Ah, I don't know, it'll probably be the same.

Lord of Undead even adds 5%. So if you have it, and Advanced Necro, you get 35%. But that will train your brain.

The necro changes will be on 1.5 and your patched HoF has nothing to do with H5 original.

So you say that in original HoMM the new necro system isn't ready yet? Or what?

Holy! That means another balance change is in the way? That's great. I find the new necromancy balanced in a poor way.
Any info on 1.5's releasedate?

The number of dark energy points you have depends on the necromancer's level and if he has build pillar of bones that adds 150 more. In the first page of this thread you can see what you can raise from each unit so I'm afraid you will have to memorise them. A master genie gives wights for instance. You could try to remember this simple rule:
Usually upg units give upg undead.
Casters give liches.
Low lvl units give skeletons or zombies(the more tanky ones )
Low tier archers up to tier 3 give skeleton archers.
Rider units give vampires.
High tier tanks give wights.
Dragons give bone dragons.
Animal-like units give ghosts.
Unicorns, angels, phoenixes and units with elemental/mechanical properties give nothing.

LotsOfLayne, if you haven't already, I suggest you read the Necromancy section (in Racial Skills) in the manual:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/game_manuals.shtml
Now, let's try to answer your question following the 3 steps in the manual:
1. How many undead creatures are raised?
you have advanced Necromancy: 30%
so if you kill 10 djinns (33 hit points each), you will be able to raise 330*30%=99 hit points worth of creatures (wights as we'll see in step 3).
2. Dark Energy: how much do you have?
As Elvin said, that depends on your heroes and Pillars of Bones built in your cities.
3. Dark Energy: how much does it cost?
Djinns are raised as Wight (95 hit points). Your 99 hit points worth kill will thus raise 1 Wight, if you can afford it.
Raising a Wight costs 87.20 DE points.
Once you understand how it works, you can use the precomputed values in the list: the number below the Djinn tells you how many Wights are raised by killing 10 Djinns at Basic Necromancy (20%). Here you have Advanced (30%), so we have to multiply by 1.5:
0.69*1.5 = 1.035, which means 1 Wight will be raised.
Below the Wight is its DE cost: 87.20

Your Dark Energy pool is refilled at the start of each week. This also mean that any bonus you gain during the week will only be useful on next week start.
Eternal Servitude: The Necromancer receives an ability to raise some of the fallen undead creatures in his or her army after combat.
One stack having suffered a loss is randomly selected. Dead units in this stack are raised again, up to 7+5*Level Hit Points, rounded down.
About the manual, that's because you looked in version 1.4, isn't it? Try the 2.1 version, that's where the Necromancy is updated!
