Quote: i.e can raise vampire lords but not vampire
Is important of what question you asked,if you want to mean using the DE can raise also upgraded units, the answer is yes (you can raise Skeleton Archers from Haven Archers). But if you asked about choosing the upgrade (to raise a Banshee or a Wraight from a Titan) I think it shouldn't be possible.Anyway,if you don't have TotE you won't have these alternative upgrades
EDIT @Azagal: Thank you It should be logically about Angels, when they return to Elrath when the "die" on the battlefield can't be raised undead, except their sword (they left their sword on the battlefield)

Raising upgraded creatures
When an upgraded creature is about to be raised, you will be given the choice of which alternate upgrade to raise.
For example, if you kill a stack of 10 Titans, you will have a possibility to raise either 3 Wraiths or 3 Banshees. That would use 309 points of Dark Energy (DE) in both cases.
Another example: You kill a stack of 100 Stalkers. You would then have a possibility of raising either 60 Skeleton Archers or 60 Skeleton Warriors. 180 points of DE would be used.
Please note that a basic creature is sometimes raised as an upgraded undead unit (like Gremlin -> Skeleton Archer) and sometimes an upgraded unit is raised as a basic undead unit (like Blood Fury -> Skeleton). And there is more: The creature levels of killed creatures and raised undead units are not always the same.
That is why i created the Necro Chart (found on page 4 of this thread). I wanted to plan the use of my DE, and just couldn't remember which creature gives which undead unit when killed. Dementia, perhaps... Anyway, I have found the chart most useful.

Corrupted Soil is the only advanced ability, and it requires neither of the 3 basic "Master of" abilities. It still requires Dark Revelation though, as before.
