Almost.
The Xel'Naga created the Zerg, but the zerg went berserk and actually destroyed several Xel'naga vessels.
About the protoss - there are two possibilities now.
One that they were created by the Xel'Naga (not for zerg extermination) And secondly - They found the primal protoss and helped them build their civilisation.
One thing is sure - one day the Xel'Naga simply left Protoss.
The Protoss then - overwhelmed by anxiety and fear of beeing left alone - scattered to a tribal societies once again and cruel, chaotical civil war occured.

Terrans basicly are humans banished from Earth.
They simply got cought in the war between the Zerg and the Protoss.
There is also the UED (United Earth Directorate)in Brood War, which came to tame the Zerg and to push back the Protoss. Simply speaking - they failed.

Not quite.
They simply met each other.
On the one side we have a Swarm of creatures under the controll of one, evolution-based mind that wants to either absorb every lifeform into the swarm, or destroy it.
From the other side - race of honorable warriors unified by psionic and mind stream known as the Khaala, or a caste of warriors that didn't wanted to give away individuality even as a price to such a unification.
Can anyone imagine other possibility than war after they met?

Wauw. MAybe I should complete the game, before STarcraft 2 comes out! The story is all gone! So Terran was banished from earth. wauw I did NOT know that. And Zerg created by some people? that also met the protoss? . Confusing  and thanks for telling me about UED, those just made me go crazy in Brood war ( I was a little dumb kid when I played that game, my english sucked at that time. and ofcourse i Cheated )

As far as i know this is the story about protoss/zerg.
The Xel'Naga created the Protoss, but they missed something or was too weak at that time. Or they became to strong.
When they failed the Xel'naga created the zerg instead.
They thougt that the Zerg couldnt be a strong force and would not betrayd the Xel'Naga because they were mindless, but they failed again.
Or they created the Zerg first and then the Protoss, i dont rember 100% of that part.
Recently the Xel'Naga has created spies and captured Protoss and Zerg to mix them into special Protoss/Zerg hybrids.
The Xel'Naga will return in Starcraft 2 and the campaign is about them, they want to destroy everything and kind of start over again.

The Xel'Naga first found the Protoss on Aiur and helped them evolve and civilized them. They consentrated on psychological, mental and technological advancement('purity of form').
Protoss rebelled against Xel'Naga, as they wanted to be on their own, without 'progress guides'. Xel'Naga's few ships got destroyed and they departed, leaving the Protoss alone.
Xel'Naga, dismayed by the course of the Protoss experiment, began a new one: they created the Overmind and basic zerg forms(like drones). Now they concentrated on increasing biological capabilities and moving mental functions to the Overmind('purity of essence'). The Overmind thought that the process of zerg's (and his) perfecting got to a point when it is not possible to advance with supervision of Xel'Naga. So then the Zerg rebelled and (at least so the Overmind thought) wiped out unaware Xel'Naga from the universe, and went on his quest of creating a perfect race by uniting form and essence, the Protoss and the Zerg.
I am 100% sure I put this story right  .

Basically, its like this. The Xel'Naga are a super intelligent anciant race who consider themselves the ultimate form of evolution. They set out across the galaxy in search for other life forms. They created to Protoss from a colony of creatures with psionic abilities and called them the Purity of Form. They also created the Zerg from parasitic life-forms found on a nearly desolate planet and named them the Purity of Essence. Seeing that they would not be able to watch over both races, they ceated the Overmind to watch the Zerg and unite ithen as one mind rather than seperate ones like the Protoss, but it quickly increased in intelligence and overpowered the Xel'Naga, destroying many of them. In the Starcraft universe, it is currently unknown if they still exist.
As for the Terran. I dont recall hearing anywhere that they were banished from Earth. They are pretty much colonists. Traveling to other planets in search for colonizable areas. They simply just got caught up in the war between Protoss and Zerg.

I see... So Protoss and Zerg are both from Xel'Naga. And the Zerg want them to unite while the Protoss refused and this act caused the war between the two races?
I also believe that Terrans are colonist. I think I remember that correctly. And also I think the Zerg corrupted some or most Terrans? What's that story again? About Kerrigan?

Yes, the Zerg did infest some Terran, not most of them though. The story of Kerrigan goes like this:
Kerrigan was specially gifted ghost (a human with psionic abilities) and a soldier for the commander, Arcturas Mengsk. While on a mission, she meets up with a marshal named Jim raynor, of the planet she's assigned to. They get a bit closer and become friends. They then go on another mission together, but there is a huge Zerg ambush. Raynor escapes with Mengsk, while Sarah Kerrigan is left to die (as far as everyone thinks). Later into the story when you play as Zerg, you have to protect a crysalis which contains something extremly important to the Overmind. When it hatches, its not just some Zerg creature..its Kerrigan, and she's been infested by the Zerg! For a while she serves under the Overmind, but eventually breaks free of its control when it was weakened. She temporarily allies with the Terran and Protoss to destroy the Overmind once and for all and gains control over the majority of Zerg forces.
There is also the appearance of Samir Duran, who first appears to be a ghost, then an infested terran ghost. But in fact, he is neither of these. It is thought that he is a Xel'Naga because he posseses vast knowledge of all 3 races, explains that he serves a much greater power, and that he has had many names over the millenia. In the secret bonus mission in Brood War you also discover that he was attempting to create Protoss/Zerg hybrids, also hinting that he is a Xel'Naga because he was trying to unite the 2 races into one.

Well, no one really knows. I myself think that is not his trueform and that he is just disguised like that to more easily fit in with the rest of the reaces. And as for what Xel'Naga look like, well, no one knows that either.

For quake's sake... play the game. "Unite" is really an unsuitable word for hostile take-over of Protoss home planet and trying to kill every one protoss. Zerg followed Protoss all the way to Shakuras and tried to take over the Dark templar homeworld.
One more time: play...the...game.

It always took some time for Blizzard to finish game.
And it is one of those things that gave them fans. They don't rush to finish the game and sell it, just to make 1000 patches for major bugs and glitches in the next week. I do not care how much time will I have to wait for SC 2. I shall patiently wait even 10 more years.
