Both Warcraft and Starcraft had good stories. But i liked starcraft universe more. Good old alien versus predator with nicer aliens than original alien, and beter predators than original predator .
Blizzard will keep all the fans, its not like they are inventing the hot water in starcraft 2, its just an update of SC1

yeah but aoe 3 was just continueing the aoe traditions. and it lost some fans by implementing new features.
homm 5 didn't change much exept graphics wise and plenty of old schoolers don't like it.

AoE 3 was NOT the same "fine tuning" sc 2 will be.
AoE 3 feels very different than AoE 2 and 1 (which are quite similar), which wont be the case with Starcraft.
H5 changed graphic style, slowed down the game pace, increased the values of individual towns, complicated skills... it had nice amount of changes, but it was still under the limits and it was all good.
Still, I assure you the most of old heroes fans like H5, just they are too busy playing it to argue with those few that don't like it, or simply grew too old to be amazed by new games like they used to a decade ago

well i guess you are right but there is still the chance.
for one it is most likely transitioning from isometric to 3d and grid based to ungrid based.(just a thought) and they have said that units are being revised.
aoe 3 introduced a revolutionary new concept i know and homm 5 wasn't a good example but sometimes the charm is just gone. Even just a small adjustment can do something like that. But if new ideas aren't introduce the game grows old. sure we all love starcraft but imagine if nothing changes between starcraft and starcraft 6 (just an example) the gameplay would go stale. there are probably going to be some big problems due to the 3d nature.
Starcraft 2 isn't a fine tuning. its a full blown makeover.
"-New units and gameplay mechanics further distinguish each race
-Vibrant new 3D-graphics engine with support for dazzling visual effects and massive unit and army sizes "
yeah blizzard may say
"Fast-paced, hard-hitting, tightly balanced competitive real-time strategy gameplay that recaptures and improves on the magic of the original game "
but the process required for this would be mammoth. i know blizard has good quality but there is no guarantee they will strike it rich.

New units don't make game different. 3D doesnt matter since the view is anyway locked in fixed position.
There is no game company i trust more than Blizzard. If they see that the game won't fulfill expectations, they will not release it (they did it with "Warcraft Adventures" and "Starcraft Ghost"). That alone makes sure that whenever we get their product, it is exactly what most of players wanted.
Don't forget that Starcraft has over 50 000 active online players today, even tho its 10 years old. You can find online game anytime, and SC2 will just refresh that part with unit re-shuffling, but essentially it will be the same game.
I know the feeling when game series gets ruined by "new turn of the page", but i think Blizzard wont fall for that one.
i still remember what great series was Settlers up to no 4, then it got ruined by awful no 5 and mediocre no 6.

new units will definately change gameplay up a bit. and blizzard is the only company i would trust with making good sequels. but the jump from isometric to 3d can be astounding and a fixed camera would make it seem archaic.
yes starcraft has over 50000 players but that is because it is unique. there is nothing else to play that is similar to starcraft.

No, you will be able to rotate camera and all fancy stuff, but eventually you will use fixed view (same like most of the players using classic homm view in h5 which pretty much fixes the camera).
New units will add to the gameplay but wont radicaly change it, it will simply refresh it like the reshuffling in heroes series which refreshes the game but doesnt change it.
Anyway as long as Starcraft 2 and Fallout 3 don't end up messed up, ill be one happy gamer

I seriously don't understand what people think when they say "Blizzard games soo good".
Yes, there are good games made by Blizzard, but also bad ones (Starcraft is definitely a very good game though) -- just like most other companies.
For example, I really don't like Warcraft 3 -- too few armies, upkeep (wtf?) and games don't last at all. Also cartoonish-graphics (I hate them even more than older but try-to-be-realistic graphics). I can't even imagine how Warcraft 1 or Warcraft 2 were, with only two races (not really even two, as 90% were copies of the other), at least so I heard.

Quality is determined by degree in which your product fulfills the expectations of a target customer.
In blizzard cases, they managed to fulfill those expectations almost EVERY single time; Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Lost Vikings, Blackthorne - even tho there will be some few people that didn't like some games from the list.
Warcraft 2 can seem to be boring game from today's perspective but back in the days, it was fulfillment of every RTS fan's dreams.
I, on the other hand, do not like WoW, but I cant ignore the fact that it was exactly what millions of people wanted, thus making it quality product.
For SC2, they will try to make a game that fulfills the expectations of mostly RTS players (thus no radical changes), and I'm quite sure it will succeed in it, like all their previous games have, and I, as a RTS player, will surely enjoy playing it.

Quality =/= Popularity
so just because WoW is popular doesn't mean it's quality
neither does that make Counter-strike 'quality'

To few armies in Wc3?
Few armies in Blizzard games is one thing that makes them have good quality, because its MUCH easier to balance then.
But beware, World of Starcraft will probably come in some years and be like WoW.
I promise you that Sc2 is gonna be like Wc3, a prologue to a MMORPG.
There are severeal hints of WoS (world of starcraft).
And WoW is still quality. A game that sucks doenst have much players and there are reasons why WoW has became so big.
Did you know that recently 1 million chinese players was in the game at the same time?

Ehm excuse me, but the easiest way to balance would be to make the game with only one single unit and no special abilities -- but I doubt it will be interesting.
Blizzard games have small armies? What other Blizzard game beside Warcraft has that limitation? Starcraft? In Starcraft you can have 200 Marines (if you kill all your SCVs, for example).
and no upkeep either!
