Sub-map was the plan, however this will be much MUCH harder to code than the map, and also would be more open to hacking (security is going to be a big problem for this game, especially since I have little programming experience in the area).

Here's an idea inspired by the warlords series:
The battles will be automatic, meaning the program will take into account unit's att/def etc., some bonuses (e.g. range>infantry), maybe some abilities that are easy to program (e.g. petrify - 20% chance of killing a whole regiment at the start of combat) and calculate the results.

I know it will take A LOT from the gameplay, but it simplifies the the code (imho) and may work at least for testing.

GM, i searched the source, and found that a.bmp is 40*40, so get here 5 same-size replacements for it(edited wesnoth tiles):

http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=145639 (click brown "download file" button on the right)

theyre a1 - a5.bmp, so use some random function for them or sumthing.

Geny - that's certainly an idea, but I feel it would take too much out of the game. Well, I suppose you could automate army battles, and keep leader battles done by the player, but it still seems a bit `wrong`. Perhaps use it as a substitute to get the game going, then add it later...

Vhilhu - thanks for those files . I obviously need to come up with a different way of generating the landscape; I was thinking maybe one per faction. If I have time tomorrow I'll set up the database properly so that the basic game structure is present, because I think I need to do the basics like storing player data (race etc.) before I move onto more advanced stuff.

Quick question then:
one individual map per faction, or all of them identical, just with different terrains? With different ones, that means some of each faction's advantages and disadvantages can be map-related, so e.g. the Fairies have more resource generators, but random battles are harder, etc. etc....

all of them on a random generator would be nice. a random map generator shouldnt be too hard, i made my own once for my sucky ASCII hotseat tbs (and im usually awful at scripting).

but, i guess factional difference would be cool. like, eg all goat-people have got 2 sulfur mines, but their location is random (im not sure if i got your game concept right), and say kobold have got more mountains (impassable obstacles) on their home maps.

btw it did work with my firefox, but it really took ages. (well, minutes, but thats the same).

I think that's probably a nice demonstration of the inferiority of Firefox!
Sorry, but there's little more I can do. If anyone else is having serious problems, tell me now, because it's quite important to the project, obviously.

The random generator thing is not a possibility, because there simply isn't room in the database to store 900 rows for every user, which would have to be done here to allow continuity from one play session to the next.

You've got the factional differences bit right, except possibly for the random bit (I can always have some randomness I suppose...)

So here it is: a sketchy suggestion of what it could be like. I've tried to shake things up a little (and unfortunately ended up putting Elves in - can anyone suggest an alternative to them other than humans?)

Disclaimer: some of the ideas probably only work in my head

Do the colors mean something or are they just associated colors?

Overall looks nice. I'll help with abilities as soon as I know what kind of abilities can be used.

As for something instead of the elves... archons?

Nope, just decorative!

Thanks, although knowing what could be done may have to wait until basic game programming is done (I've done the database structure by the way), so that I know just what is feasible...

Quote:

Archon is a great word, but would be far more appropriate as a regiment type. Could replace Cataphract perhaps (not particularly keen on this name as it's a little too specific to Earth's history).

Why can't they be evil? I was just trying to break the stereotypical idea - and I can just imagine evil dwarves with shining red eyes and deep-rooted anger (alternatively I could say that I couldn't use demons, so needed another race)

Quote:

Well I picked the race I liked best from your suggestions, and thought it was appropriate to take the place of the Elves of HoMM5 as the nature-based, earth-worshipping tree-hugger guys. This is probably completely the wrong environment for Nekoma based on your reply! What should they be / what could take their place?

Maybe put naga as water and lizardmen as light?

One more thing - don't you think that it will be better if opposite elements will have opposite alignments? You can, for instance, change water (lizard/naga) to good and nekoma to evil, if that's what bixie wanted.

I don't think so.  Naga's are primarily water spirits. how about Avians of some kind.  They would have bird like wings and appearance, but the rest be humans.  You would have to change your harpies in the Beholder town.  I advise Gnolls.

Good point 'Twould be interesting...
That's an okay solution, I'll probably make the edit, although lizardmen as the classic good faction does seem a little jarring.

Right, I'm scrapping the good and evil as tags, they're just too, well, taggy. The nature of the factions will probably remain though - I just can't see my incarnation of the Nekoma as evil, they're supposed to have `sanctuaries`. We'll see what bixie says.

I wasn't aware that Naga were actually water-associated in myths, so fair enough. This strengthens Geny's proposition of swapping the races.
As for the Avians, this is what the Sylphs are supposed to be! I may change the name to Avians (I was going to use Aviaks but I think this may be copyrighted).

Geny - of course, photobucket! I forgot it because originally I was going to upload the Excel file that I made the image in...

as i mentioned before, there ancient element was fire, and they were great destroyers.

if your thinking of something to replace them that is A) evil B) earth aligned, choose goblins, and have losts of nasty wormy things and beetle monsters in the line-up. if you want to stick with good and earthy, try gnomes (not the mad inventors, but salt-of-the-earth farmers)

Right... because of the server move part of our discussion gor deleted, so I'm gonna copy/paste the most important parts from old HC.
Here goes:

The final (for now) chart:

Daystar's comments:
Myth Units (Fantasy/Magic/Mystic)

Fortress

Minotaur: I was orriginally sceptical, but then I remebered that the original minotaur was the son of the Sea God, Poseidon.  Good choice.

Medusa: I really think of Medusa as being more related to stone, but a sea medusa is fine.  Especially if they were presented as being transformed Nagas.

Manticore: I'm not really sure where this one fits in for a water town.  Again, I see them as stoney more than aquatic.

Cyclops: Again, not expected but Sons of Sea God Poseidon.  Nice.  Also, good strong crushy things.

Hydra: Always happy to see a hydra.  They can fit in pretty much anywhere.

My recomendation: It's mostly good, but I'd advise replacing Manticore with Triton, or possibly Hippocampus.

Castle

Falcon: Just fine.

Pegasus: Just fine, though I never understood how they fit in an army.

Unicorn: You have two horses now, what's going on?

Sphinx: Odd to see them in a "Light" town, as they were rather evil creatures.  Still, that was depending on your mythology, so just fine.  I'll mention them later.

Gryphon: Just fine.

My recomendation: Take out the Pegasus/Unicorn (depending on your preference) and move the rest of the units up.  In the remaing slot, put Valkyries, Angels, or something similar.

Tower

Sprite: Jut fine.

Caladria: Just fine.

Genie: Genies are rather deserty, while Sprites are forresty.  It's kinda incongruous, but it could work, depending on how it looks, or the mythology involved.

Roc: Just fine.

Thunderbird: Seems a lot like the Roc if not presented well, but I like both so it works just fine.

My recomendation: Is not necessary here, it's just fine.

Sanctuary

Gnome: Yay, they're cute.

Wolf: Wolves and Gnomes work together?  Aren't Gomes kind of the wolves' natural food?

Dryad: Fine

Centaur: Good.

Treant: Good, but it could use a different name so people don't start screaming "Tolkien!"  Dendroid works.

My recomendation: I don't think wolf works here, they're too wild.  A werewolf might, however.  Your lineups seem to be in defiance of stereotypes, so why not let werewolves be good guys?

Stronghold

Gog: Demons and big cats working together? If that floats your boat....

Cerebus: See above.

Balor: I'm not sure what these are, so I'll abstain from comment.

Chimera: Odd choice, but It works.

Giant: Giants have always been associated with Ice, so a fire town might not be the best place.  However, if you put "Fire Giant" as the name, it would leave you open for giants in other places.

My recomendation: The Myth units here need a bit of a rethink, in my personal opinion.

Citidel is just fine. My only complaint is
Effreet: Effreets are fire spirits.  Why are they in the shadow?

OVERALL
My overall recomendation: Swaping.

my suggestion about nature distribution:
Defensive: Dwarves, Nagas.
Offensive: Nekoma, Lizardmen.
Balanced: Beholders, Sylphs.

Edit: this is something new:

I wish to withdraw my nature suggestion. Here is the reason:
We have 6 races, each one with corresponding to 1 element. We also have 3 parameters, each one corresponding to 2 races - alignment, nature, worship (see suggestion below). I think it will be more interesting if every race will have a unique combination of those 3. Meaning that 2 different races won't have more than 1 common parameter.
In my nature proposition dwarves and nagas are both defensive AND both neutral. I wish to avoid that. Therefore I suggest we work in stages:
1. Decide what kind of worships there can be.
2. Do the most logical matches (e.g. Dwarves are known for being defensive and giving themn something else wouldn't look good).
3. Distribute the rest of the parameters, bearing in my not to repeat pairs that have been used already.

Worship suggestion:
Like I wrote above, I would like to see 3 "worships". I think that this part may refer to the race's point of view about life and death:

a) Life - the race values highly the lives of all living creatures and tries preserve them if at all possible. Even when they kill others they do it to save lives (hunting to eat, going to war to protect civillians).
b) Death - the race doesn't care about anyone's lives, including thir own. They believe that by death they will reach a better place and seek a honorable way to die (sort of viking philosophy).
c) Nature - the race believes in balance between life and death, the eternal cycle of nature. They live their own lives without the lust to kill or the zeal to protect and adjust themselves to new situations just like the nature changes and evolves through time.

P.S. if you agree with my proposition, I suggest changing the term "worship" to "philosophy".

To quote the alternative me before the alternative Geny posted his suggestions:

Quote:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Focus - your race type has certain focuses, and you can change the balance of these to give yourself different abilities. There are three areas to vary - nature, magic and worship. Changing you nature modifies the statistics of your regiments; your magic affects the spells available; your worship gives you certain skills similar to the HoMM5 racial ones which scale as you change you focus / level. Geny suggests e.g. Life worship resurrecting some of your troops after battle. Supplied by me and Geny
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up - ideas for what the nature, worship and worship-associated skills could be for each race, e.g. Dwarf Sanctuary (probably needs a name change btw) is defensive, worships life and has the skill you suggested above, etc. etc..

And after:

Quote:

The natures actually fit quite well in my eyes!

As for the worshipping, well iirc the ones I suggested were just examples. We do need dichotomies for the focus-change thing to work, so we'll need either 3 or 6, as you suggest. And this is assuming we stay with the 6 factions - there's always room for more, although I was already beginning to run out of names! For me as ever, quantity is good (I was outraged that H5 was only going to have just 6 factions in the original game!).

Will think more tomorrow...

Plus there were these concepts for the Nekoma:
