@bixie
Read the last 5-10 posts and you'll get th idea. Feel free to comment.
@GM

Anyway, I'd really like to see this in a more or less complete form, even if only on paper.

I asked for opinions, no one answered. It's kinda hard to move like that.

What we could still do... (as much as I can think of)
Abilities associated with philosophy / unique for each faction
Combat mechanics - what do we prefer? HoMM5? HoMM3? Etc..
Fiddly details e.g. creature stats
Town buildings (the plan here is to have a combination of `functional` buildings like those of Heroes (so barracks for building a regiment type etc.), combined with some `more RPG-ish` buildings like shops and inns, which perhaps have some function for hero but also help with the running of the town.
Ooh that's another thing - town management. I'd like it to be a bit more in-depth than HoMM, perhaps...
My opinions will hopefully come later.

essentially, what i can do is make it go beyond a game, and make it into a universe. from there, you can design anything you want, and it will be much more engaging than "these guys attack is X against this guys defence Y"
and all it requires is an investment of your souls!
Edit: my computer is being really annoying, so all new ideas will be posted here.
edit edit: its passed now, so i can post again

Edit: what's the matter, bixie? can't post? Well, I can't either.
P.S. At least I can still edit...

About town management: How about after each attack on a town, buildings are damaged/destoryed, and you have to rebuild/repair them. Also, buildings break down over time. Eg, after one week a building might be at only 90% of it's total possible repair level. You would need to spend 10% of the orriginal price of the building to repair it. All of this lines up, however. All buildings degreade together, so at the start of a week you might find yourself with ~10 buildings needing repairs. You can only repair 3 per day, so you would have to decide what to repair and what to wait on.
A building that is not at 100% does not do 100% of the work. So, the "City Hall" which produces 5000 gold normaly would only produce 4000 gold if it were at 80%.

I HCMed this to Daystar earlier, but now that I can post again I'll say it here:
Damaging/destroying buildings during an attack is not a bad idea which have been successfully implemented in some games.
However, buildings that collapse over time is too much micromanaging and not too realistic. A wise city ruler won't let his buildings to break down. In many games the problem of collapsing buildings is solved by maintaince (sp?) cost of the buildings which costs you money every turn, and if you don't have enough you automatically sell something.

Maintenance is not hugely to my taste, although I do like the idea of being able to `boost` certain buildings, rather than others, so this is something to consider.
As for the damaging of buildings, you would probably be able to take over other towns, so this would likely be included.
Since it's Saturday today I sat down to try and do some more of the actual game - but after yet more optimising, I realised that, both programmatically and in terms of content, there was no obvious section to be done next. Ultimately therefore I didn't manage to do any more.

Well, to keep this going we could put aside the attribute distribution and move to something else.
For example, let's see what skills we can think of for the philosophies.
Although, anyway I feel we need more then 2 people on this to create something interesting.

Quote: a) Life - the race values highly the lives of all living creatures and tries preserve them if at all possible. Even when they kill others they do it to save lives (hunting to eat, going to war to protect civillians).
b) Death - the race doesn't care about anyone's lives, including thir own. They believe that by death they will reach a better place and seek a honorable way to die (sort of viking philosophy).
c) Nature - the race believes in balance between life and death, the eternal cycle of nature. They live their own lives without the lust to kill or the zeal to protect and adjust themselves to new situations just like the nature changes and evolves through time.
We need passive skills - e.g. Life will give you the ability to ressurect some fallen warriors after a battle.

ressurecting fallen warriors is a pretty active skill.
for the nekoma, since they are quite Kamikaze, would probably have a "if there are twice as many enemies, or all on a higher level, the morale of the nekoma goes up". give it a name like "dis is gonna be fun!"
beholders would probably have a ability like "your dieing, not us" as they believe in a balance.
active racial skills, like in heroes 5, would also be fun to do.

Ressurecting is passive, because it automatically ressurects warriors after battle.
Some sort of frenzy for Death philosophy would indeed be good. Since I thought about vikings when I wrote it it could make the warriors go Berserk in battle, but what exactly will it do?... increased chances for critical hits/luck maybe?

i was more thinking about increasing morale.
its like having a group of homacideal maniacs, armed with cabbages, up against the american marines, all of them, wtih big tanks, guns and so on.
what do they do?
run screaming into battle.
its an "out gunned, out numbered, but not out matched!" kinda thing

Well that's something I would / will have to investigate, because some types are far easier to program than others (HoMM3 over HoMM5 for example).
Much as I love Geny's 3 philosophies, I'm beginning to think that we should have a unique one for each faction, to make them more individual. I think active abilities are `better` than passive ones - I'd much rather have fun gating in my troops than having a bit more damage done on retaliation or whatever, but I suppose we could have for each philosophy a more active bonus, and something more passive. Kind of like Haven I suppose. The slight problem perhaps is that the distinction between magic and philosophy might become blurred.

i see.
dwarves philosophy could be something like "Hold the line!" and they are able to build barracades and stuff like that.
beholders philosophy could be something along the lines of "you do it!" and summon underlings to do so.
nekoma get adrenlines bonuses like orcs do. the more crazy and suicidial acts they do, the more adrenline bonuses they get for the game. basically it encourages people to go up against a dragon, armed with only a dishcloth!
more to come
