You stand in the middle and attackers come one after another - but they do not resist and follow your moves. Sometimes I just get stuck and run out of ideas on what to do, that sucks

Quote: I don't know, we are supposed to simply feel, follow the opponent's motion. As such we don't try to predict what he will do, of course that is mostly for the attacker who is the recipient of the technique. If you are a defender you will still let the attack come but you'll have to make the choice of holding your position or rising to meet the attack - and which technique will be used. With experience I'll probably be able to guess better the possible variations in each attack but you still cannot fall just because it seems at the opponent is about to throw you, aikido is very combo-able. Sometimes our sensei starts unleashing his combos at random intervals and we are dumbstruck
Speaking of muscle memory that is a given if you want to react fast, recently I watched a video of how to fall safer from a quick throw. It came up automatically next time I was down fast. Anyway I love how rolls come into play, adds a nice touch of harmony. Smooth.
It's interesting seeing how each sensei has his own vision. My signature comes from that, you can always learn what your sensei has in mind but eventually will modify it to better suit your individual style. In my case he's mostly trying to awake our sense of ki than work on individual techniques, also the moves are very akin to a sword's - fluid, abrupt, constant. That was not how he was trained initially but he's constantly trying to improve, currently he has 4 dan.
Defending is usually easier than attacking, and is the first thing you learn when practising martial arts. Personally I think a headbutt, hook or simple stuff often works just as nice against most stuff. Of course if a person rushes you (you'd be surprised how many actually tries to simply run at you) it's just to use some kind of simple throw (keep in mind, if you fight someone that has learned judo or similar martial arts themselves he/she will probably know how to turn a throw around so that you will be thrown too, it's really simple once you learn how to do it actually). What are you practising? I've only tried karate, tae kwon do, judo, jiu jitsu, shootfighting and boxing .. and then I quit to find my own style I am thinking of starting up again, but I wanna try something new. Any ideas? Something sentring mostly around punches and joint manipulation, I am not so much into advanced kicks and stuff.
Oh, and if the moves are fluid there is a possibility you might be able to see what he is going to do from his movements, better to fight with more "abrupt and sudden" strikes that would never be expected. Not so graceful, but damn effective!
@Edit: Just read new posts ... that sounds kindof fun, wonder if there's anything like that here.

Well, mostly it depends on the teacher. Some are more strict than others.
But some kyukushin karate might be what you're looking for.
Though finding a teacher to go by the old methods might be really hard.
Or simply go for a gym that has boxing and mixed arts.
Should be sufficient.
BTW. How was shootfighting? Tought about trying that myself.

Normally yes someone with judo should be able to throw you down as well but in aikido once you get a good grip you don't just use your strength to throw, you depend on the opponent's pain to fall by himself. I'm inexperienced of course but the times I tried to break free more pressure was applied and I just had to give in. Painful, not nice
Impressive, you've done your share of martial arts. If you can combine their elements effectively it should be pretty neat, it was Doomforge that made me understand how one specialization is bad due to its inherent weaknesses. Unfortunately I only have a superficial knowledge of each and don't know how they compare in terms of effectiveness.

Shootfighting was rather fun actually ... and so far the best martial art I've tried. You learn kicks, punches, joint manipulation, how to get out of grips, how to throw and hold people ... at least where I went. I guess different trainers teach it in different ways, I didn't go for several years after all. But yeah, I recommend at least trying it!

@Elvin: Ahh, that's pretty special. Sounds fun.
Depending on if the GODDAMN JUDO SITH-COUNCIL will ban anymore throws I might change martial art someday...
Yeah they ban throws... it's the price of being in the olympics. They don't think Judo is "exiting" enough for the public so they ban stuff to promote other throws. So they just banned leggrabs. Yeah leggrabs, all of em. You can't grab legs with your hands.
Unless you do it in a combination attack but it still sucks... many of my pals have thought about quitting Judo because of this.
Greco-Roman-Judo... yay. I should start a Judo Fight Club and grow schizophrenia, I shall call him Melvin.

To me that sounds more like joint manipulation than throws, enough self-dicipline and some of that might be ignored (not all though, unless you want to end up with broken bones). And if you want to get free, don't try to "break out". I suggest you rather try to use some of the other stuff you've learned there against the person trying to get you down; the best defense is a good offense. There's always something I can do.
I've practised martial arts since I was 6 'til I was 14, and since then I practised myself the parts I found most interesting and useful. Well, Doomforge is right ... the fighting style I've found most effective is ninjutsu, since it's sort of a merge between most stuff. You have punches, kicks, throws, joint manipulation (I love joint manipulation ) ... and it's only about being effective, not looking good. About a year ago (I kindof left here for some months .. well, I kindof left everything and traveled) I got to test out everything I know in very real life, really recommended if you want to learn really fast, and experience alot of strange stuff.
Oh, and put that superficial knowledge to good use by picking out the essential stuff and focus on it

Oh yeah, I'd love to try Ninjutsu. Too bad Father left, he was a Ninjutsuka. Didn't get to discuss with him enough...
I've never seen a Ninjutsu dojo in my entire life though...
I bet if they changed the Gi to an orange jumpsuit they'd gain worldwide success.

I don't think it's very common ... most want something to show off for their friends. I honestly don't know if there are any in Norway, even heard a rumor ninjutsu is illegal here.
Thinking about going to Japan and practise, if I had the money for it

It is a damn cold period here. This morning there were -20 Celsius degrees when I went to school, and I heard the thermometer dropped as low as to -40 in some places during the night (somewhere in Transylvania to be more exact.)
Apparently, it will get worse. How much colder can it get? I haven't seen so much snow in ages (no pun intended).
