Devil May Cry 1: The first one is always the classic ;p This game was and still is one of the best ps2 titles in it's genre..
Dante must face Mundus and all his marionettes and other freaky monsters on the island arround a castle. Including the awesome fire scorpion "Phantom". The game is much about the legend of sparda which is dantes father. The legendary dark knight sparda to say it right. And dante must acchieve his fathers power and sword to kill mundus.
And it is in the first game we meet Nelo Angelo aka Vergil for the first time.. His twin brother..
The game itself is very fun all the way trough. Always fast action and cool scenes..

Devil May Cry 2: Quite dissapointing.. It's about fast attack based combat with difrent weapons and monsters once again, but with a new story.. Lucia takes Dante to the Dumary Island where he is introduced to Matier, her mother. And they both whant to kill the evil character Arius. But while lucia figts Arius, dante figts the summoned Argosax.
The game is fun too, but not as fun as DMC 1..

Devil may Cry 3: Dantes Awakening: It's taking place before DMC 1 and 2. And this time it starts with a mysterios man "Arkham" brings an invitation from his brother Vergil. A huge tower (Gate to the demon world) is popping op from the ground in the middle of the city. He must face Vergil and defeat him 3 times along with some other huuge bosses. And DMC 3's difficulty level is much higher than DMC 1 and 2..
The huuge Ceberus is a tough boss which shows up already in mission 2. Through the story we meet lady, a woman hwo have decided to kill her father Arkham. And we meet Jester the freaky clown which is lady's father Arkham..
This is better than DMC 1 in my opinion, cuz here we face a lot more monsters, bosses and cool scenes than in the first. We also have a much more interesting story with a lot of twists in it.
And after the credits we see Vergil talkin with mundus. It's too bad though that vergil is harder in dmc 3 than in dmc 1 where it should have been vice versa.

Devil May Cry 4: this time we meet a whole bunch of new characters, and a new player character.
You start the game with a yong boy Nero (You) in a church listening to the Order(A place where they pray to theire god "Sparda" (dantes father))'s leader "His holliness". Dante shows up in the church and shoots the holliness. Then we meet Credo, Kyries brother, and the orders captain. And we meet Agnus, the wierd scientis/docter hwo is trying to open the gate to hell, and combine dead objects with demon souls. And we meet dante which you have to fight, and we meet his holliness waken up again. And we meet Berial the conquer of the fire hell (Huge fire centaur), Bael the master of frost (Huge ice frog), another frog (can't remember his name), Echidna (a Dragon lookalike plant which is some kind of female creature), and the huugest boss i'd ever seen in a game. The savior (a huuuge stone angel man thing).
Credo, Agnus and his holliness has a demon form just like dante, but nero only has his demon arm and a blue soul thing when he finds Yamatho (Vergils sword, and the key to the hell gate)..
You control Nero in 14 missions, and Dante in 8..
Nero can master a lot of tricks and combos to his sword, gun and arm while dante can get difrent swords, and guns, and playstyle modes.
DMC4 is in my opinion the best of them all, everything is perfect exept the story..

As for a question: I am playing DMC4 on the dif-level Dante must die, and i cannot beat the damn Berial. But ive noticed that some scarecrows have some purple/black flares on them, and berial gets purple flares too.. What is that?

those blue demon eyes make them touger and immune to staggering which means that once they start their swing they cannot be stoped with just attacking them with a sword so you have to dogde them more and land more hits. They'll start appearing some time after the demon has spawned so it's advised to kill the first ones first

Which brings us to the question... is Nero actually Vergil in a new form? Or is the demon in his arm actually Vergil?

He can wield Yamato after all...

While possessed by the demon in his arm, Nero says "Give me more power"

I haven't played DMC4 yet but it's quite an interesting question don't ya think

Since there are still topics about this pretty much on every DMC forum, I'm guessing that it wasn't answered in DMC4...

Oh... and I kinda spoiled the game for myself a little when searching around different Nero/Vergil topics, but these are Dante's words when he gives Yamato to Nero:

"That sword was used to seal away the demons, can't have something like that floating around can I? Gotta keep it in the family."

Hehe... this pretty much states that Nero has the blood of Sparda somehow...

EDIT: Bah, it's so damn obvious! Nero's devil trigger awakens as he thinks of Kyrie and how to protect her, the same way that Vergil's obsession for power comes from not having the power to protect HIS mother! That arm is Vergil!

When Dante said "it's gotta be in the familly." bacause he whanted the sword back.. And Nero's....... actually i think Capcom made the game like that so DMC fans could discuss this without knowing the right answer..
But yes, there is much that points in Vergils way, and much that doesn't.. Play the game.

Another thing is: Have any one completed Dante Must Die yet? That's the only mode i need! unless it unlocks another mode.. (Not heaven or hell, cuz i completed that too)
