Poll Question:
Do you play opposite gender characters in video games?

Well do you?

I'm male but I don't mind playing opposite gender characters in games.  I played through Jade Empire first with a male but the second time through I used a woman character.  It made some situations *interesting*.

Then of course there are great games like Syberia where you don't have a choice.  It's still great to play as Kate Walker.

On the other hand it might be frustrating for a female player of Planescape: Torment to be locked into that male character.

Well ehm why not? I play female characters when I think they'd match the style of my character more than a male one (kinda obvious lol).

When I still played WoW (some 3 years ago) I had a priestess because I thought that a guy simply doesn't cut it. I don't see any big deal about this since it changes absolutely nothing. I don't even see how it'd make some situations more interesting. How?

Rather not, I always try to design a character which is real myself or ideal myself. None of them is opposite sex I believe

Why always yourself?
It's not that you can make character unique, not really. You can just chose what he/she should look like. The Roleplaying is just limited to choseing a class in most RPGs nowadays so you can't really have a unique character since the person will always say and act as you would since you're the guy playing him/her lol.
But it can still be fun.

Yes, but i prefer to play whit male characters.

There are many games where you can pick either Female or Male game character and naturally the female charter is often weaker and magic dependant. I like mine character/s whit maximum strenght.

Games where you make your charter from a scratch i always make a male, kinda fantasy monsters of yourself.

Most female game character are also annoying as hell, screaming off like that if some puny Zombies touches them a little. There are still exceptions, about 10% of all ladies are still quite playable. There is atleast 1 female in character in each fighting game what you can consider a good character. There is also atleast 1 good girl in every Final Fantasy game, what really is as good as the guys are.

If the game is good enough i can consider playing it again using the female character. (Currently; Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin at DS )

Pardon my gameing ignorance but there are games where it actually makes a difference in gameplay wether you pick a girl or a guy?

Can't think of any now, but there are some where gender does matter in terms of stats.

What?

Of course there is Azagal. The statics are often way different and i like it like that. Feels more realistic when the females don't hit as hart but for sake of balance are faster/long ranged/healer etc.

I think most games has this, maybe you haven't just noticed it

Well then it comes down to what class you want to play in the end. Not wether you want to be a guy or a girl.
I see the "realism" in a male babarian overpowering a female babarian but I still think it's kinda stupid to have certrain attributes exclusively for something you choose before you pick a class (this case it'd be male/female).
Because if you want to play a babarian and the male has +20 Vitality and Strength while the female has +20 intelligence and dexterity you at an disadvantage if you pick the female. So even if you wanted to play the female babarian you'll most likely end up with a male on.

And I don't like pre-determination like that.

EDIT:

I'm just not much of a gamer I'm afraid.

If it's a game with multiple characters, such as Neverwinter Nights, I'll have a mix of males and females, with my main character being male. If it's a game with a single character, I pretty much always remember using a male character. I played a female kobold in Dark Age of Camelot before, and from time to time I was asked, "ARE YOU A GIRL IN REAL LIFE??!!" and I was like, "Yea!"

But that got old, as entertaining as it was.

I always play males cause women are physically and mentally inferior.

Oh alright trolling HC isn't right. There's plenty of other sites for that.
Meh, recently I played a sorceress in Warhammer Online, since male sorcerers not only lack boobs but also don't fit into the lore too well, and I'm a lore freak for that stuff... And I went with females a few other times. But I mostly play males, dunno why. I can roleplay them better, I guess.

I usually start a game with a male character, not necessarily a variation of myself as it's all about roleplaying. But I often pick females and looks aside the game feels different somehow.

But what is there to roleplay? You can't let you character have character. Unless you'd suddenly to behave differently when you play another character. And who does that playing online Oo?

Ah wait:.... ah nevermind I guess you'd totally do that lol.

Is there any other explanation for the notion of people to think that a female character means female player than naivity?

Usually someting like male, female, male, female, and the list goes on. Opposite of what was last time next time.
There are few games where it makes a difference, other than stats if thats the case. In KotoR 1 the main character will fall in love with 1 of the 2 that the second in command depending on gender, and in Fallout you get the kicks of seing the gender you did not pick becomeing the security cheif of the vault

I once played through Fallout 2 with a female character. Other than that, no.

I once played in a forum RP with a genderless character, though.

And we mustn't forget Haggash, Freyda and Deleb ofc...
