I also saw Avatar. <3
I'm one of those lurkers but the film was so great that I just must give my opinion about it!

Avatar
First off they did mention the US. That genereal said "You're not in Kansas anymore". ^^
The start of the film was boring! I wanted to see the Na'vi and the planet! The Na'vi and Netifri were so beautiful and cute! I just wanted to live with them and almost got depressed when I got out from the theatre. Me and my friends cried so much (I guess a "spoiler" comes here) when those humans destroyed their world tree! But I think I recongnised the big tree thing from somewhere else.

I agree that the movie was very predictable. I knew from the first time they met that they would go together and bla bla bla!

But I didn't understand one thing.
Netirif says that Eywä doesn't take sides. Yet in the end lots of shark-rhinos begin to attack the humans?

Avatar was a beautiful but predictable movie. Even though it was predictable it was still the best movie I had ever seen and I just want to travel to Panora and become one of the Na'vi! <3

How about Lemony Snicket: A series of Unfortunate events? It wasn't bad if you are liking the Harry Potter style movies.  Twilight? Willow?

Edit: Nice post cerestia, I've got to see that Avatar movie.

Thank you.
I will probably start posting so more now (I came here because I needed help with that stupid Inferno mission in H5 ).

I don't see why so many people dislike Twilight a lot? Because it's very popular?

As for me twilight is ok but nothing more.... i am just not that vampire movies fan jst too much of them..

Recently or in fact on recent sunday we (me and my FW) finnaly watched the Sherlock Holmes movie... Nice music and great play, the plot pulls you in.... The action parts are on decent level and there some funny momments. After the whole i have feeling that i hadn't watched a movie but one episode of TV series.... so it left me hungry for more adventures of Sherlock Holmes..

The Holmes and Watson characters are deep and colorfull and very interstingly shown.

So avatar surpassed titanic. I kinda expected it but what it managed was spectacular, I always hoped someone would bring that movie down. Lotr couldn't, even the dark knight failed to reach that high so I wondered how much longer it would take. Now some may mourn the modern times where people just go see everything just because it looks shiny. To an extent it is true but I see this event as a hint that people primarily seek escapism.

Now let's see how long it will take for avatar to be dethroned

Just note that adjusted for inflation there are several movies that surpass Avatar, forget the exact list however.

It's all about creating a curiosity, I haven't met any one who thought that it was the greatest movie ever. Though the first time I saw trailers, I thought that it was a generic, special effects movie. Though when people told me it wasn't I wanted to see it, not because I think it'll be a great movie, because I'm curious.

I'm aware of the inflation thing, what I'm not sure though is how much it affects people going to the cinema. If we count it avatar isn't even sixth on the top list.

@Shares
Ticket sales don't reflect a film's quality, would you be able to say titanic is the best movie in history and keep a straight face?

Movies I generally enjoy are of course a bit deeper than that Take imaginarium of doctor Parnassus for instance, that was a brilliant film. Imaginative, colourful, great acting and cast, meaningful yet vague. A movie that leaves a lasting appeal and makes you think.

You have to hand it to Avatar for getting those sales during a thick recession though.

Star Wars still ranks substantially higher with inflation. Also, the feat of Star Wars is that it was a fairly low-budget movie that was expected to be just another sci-fi flick that would generate some modest sales and then more or less disappear, and it became a cinema legend. Avatar had a huge budget with heavy marketing and an extremely famous director backing it, so it was destined to perform good from the beginning.

edit:

Titanic = masterpiece
