Got killed by jungle terrain. Just not enough space for my mounted warriors to maneuver. I was at war with pretty much everyone at the same time, couldn't get any income from caravans. Just ended in disaster. I hung on for a couple of centuries, but it just wasn't in the cards. Didn't help that Catherine was so far ahead of me in military technology.
I was trying to win by breeding a faction of holy warriors so I could purchase military units with faith. It was working fairly well but all that focus on Piety just slowed down my tech and cultural progress too much.

That sounds fun. I think I'll download Civ 5 soon but I'm not sure if I should get the Mac or pc version, I use OS X 95 percent of the time, yet I'm guessing PC version has custom mods that are not available on Mac. Are they worth switching the system?

Not sure about mods and Mac, didn't go for any, game's pretty sweet on default.
Yea Cor, jungle sucks hard at the beginning, might as well restart the map if you get it, it's terrible in early game. Late game is pretty sweet for technological progress. And be sure to not go to war too much cuz it ruins diplomacy and you won't be able to redeem yourself anytime soon in the next 200-300 turns on Marathon. Also, faith is not that great, I know about that cuz I've always rushed Protestantism and Piety just to find out how inefficient it is in late game. It's not a worthwhile investment. You're better off investing in income which you can then spend on practically any other game mechanism that you want. Happiness, culture, research pacts, city-state benefits, units... all of it. Although investing in economy requires some early and middle game turtling, but after that you can become invincible. Last time I played Caesar at Emperor I mopped the ground with all the other 20 Civs after turn 800. First on research, first on culture, first on diplomacy, first on everything. I could've gone for a diplomatic victory buying 25 city states before elections, or make the SS components for science victory, but decided that a nuclear war was much more interesting. Complete annihilation
Look at me getting into it so much. Ah, good times...

Well, civ is fun untill you realise the only resource that matters, is money.
Pretty much goes for every other 4x game too though
Endless legend is also worth a look. It was still obviously not nearly done in the summer but it should be pretty much finished now.

Well, let me ask it another way then, do you play with custom mods installed or do you still play the original game? If there are no mods that are essential, I'll go with Mac version since it's my natural environment. (Not sure if it's proper English to use that term for an OS but you get my point.)

Playing MMX - Legacy. Trying a different party this time. Pretty easy game once you get the hang of it. Still interesting and rewarding. If only Ubi would invest more in the franchise.

So true.
But then again, more investment would mean more casual style. No thanks.

Yeah, I loved the game. Would definitely buy another one.

I play Civ 5 with no mods. But that might just be me. I rarely mod any games.

The only mod I run with is 300% slower tech, all it does is allow me to play in quick and construct and build armies and my empire faster, and allows me to enjoy each era more. Only just started using it, and I've been having tons of fun before especially in multiplayer.

Playing AoW 3 with GR DLC.
Considering that gaming tastes have been refined over the last nearly 3 decades, the game is probably the best I've ever played:
It has basically everything a 4X game should have, and for my taste all elements fit extremely well. It's basically Civ light on research and city founding and building and Civ heavy on tactical combat, which is what I prefer.
Add to that a fabulous RMG, 6 completely different Leader classes (Necromancer being in the works for a 7th to come), each with their own tech and unit trees, and 7 races with differences, and you can't err with that one, especially when you consider that there are also 5 neutral race/unit dwellings (Giants, Dragons, Undead Archons, Feys, Nagas), Artefact construction, and unit upgrades, both via experience and additional buildings depending on what locations are on the map within a town radius (for example, if "Ancient Ruins", a lootable site, are within a town radius, you can build a special building in town that allows better than regular Pikeman type unit building).
You can also build multiple heroes in game and the range of possible settings when you start a new game allows a maximum in customizing for your tastes.
That game is incredible insofar, as it is not so much a remake of an older game with up-to-date graphics and a couple of superficial changes, it is basically a completely new take on it.
Also, dev support is remarkable.
I can only urge everyone to try it. If you look for turn-based strategy in a fantasy world with tactical combat, but want things a bit more on the Civ side than HoMM, Heroes on the battlefield and unit experience, the game is everything you ever wanted to play.

Well, it depends on what type of game your playing. It's important yes, but I remember my Culture Victory game. It was sort of a learning curve for me (I only just found out how the newest BNW Culture mechanics work, for instance how to juggle with work of arts to maximize their Culture output etc). All was nice, but France, being now a Culture-oriented civ was out of reach at one point. Guess what? Yes, I declared war on them, conquered Paris, turned most of their country into rubble with Nukes. Without me taking action, France would secure a cultural victory. A very "cultural" way of doing things no? Unfortunately till end game I had to deal with "Washington" who's States were a military power house at that point. I was playing Shoshone on an North America based map
That said, depending on your game, a resource such as culture can be more important than gold, even if the said gold is needed for buying an army. I mean, having money is important but you can win a game without it. I think they've balanced it out quite good...

I can only say, that EL is a very good game, kinda like an "easier" version of Civ. Most mechanics are less complicated. That does not mean the game is lacking in some way. It's just less "overwhelming", its gameplay is more fluid then Civ5. EL certainly has it's depth though. And an incredible atmosphere to boot. I've already wrote about it in my earlier posts. With some more tweaks (AI, better late game) it will be near perfect. One of the best PC games of the year.

I am quite perplex about civ 5 interface. I have no access to a shortcuts manual (in game menu does not offer anything about, wtf?), so had to find each key by pressing randomly. The view is constantly moving from one unit to another, if you zoom out you can't distinguish anything, if you zoom in then your head explodes with all the moves right to left, out and in.
Click on city does nothing (except zoom out, again!), had to find key "+" to trigger some city screen. If your unit is on automatic move, I found no key to keep track of it.
I expected some intuitive interface at least. Am I an outdated dinosaur or people really lost the knowledge of making top games?
