Well even though thats a good question, its more fun to think that certain races are better at using certain schools of magic.
But i agree i think a necromancer should use light magic if its necessary, in a weaker form.

The 4th faction will be Academy. I think they spoiled it in the Necropolis PDF file where you can read "Necromancers, like Wizards, are rarely seen in the front lines". And we all know whose hero The Wizards are...

I actually like my tea without Sugar, but with a pinch of milk.
Anyway, HoMM originally didn't have the Wizard/Tower/Academy faction, it was added in HoMMII.
So you can have HoMM without the Academy, admittedly they would be missed, but any faction would be missed, people are still missing HoMMIII's Fortress (myself included).
With only 4 old factions for the initial release, there are a lot of factions that will have to be cut for the first stage of this new game.
Also if we're going to hop on the: "Can't be without faction X" wagon.
Warlock/Dungeon has a longer track record and some of the most loved monsters of the series are or have been part of that faction.
Including the Minotaur, Gargoyle, Griffin, Hydra, (Black)Dragon, Medusa, Manticore.
If even Dungeon isn't safe, nobody is.

That's.. not how ubi thinks. Same could be said about dungeon, sylvan, stronghold and so on.

Fortress: No mention of them at all in H6 so far. Tbh I do not think the Dwarves were a that popular race in H5. They do not seem to have done anything important around this time. On a scale from 1 to 5, I give the possibility of them appearing as the Fourth race a 2.
Also of the possible terrains, I only think Underground fits with them.
Stronghold: Orcs have not been mentioned either yet but then, the founding of their land would start around this time I guess. I think the barbaric Orcs may be to similiar to the brutish Demons. Just like the Dwarves, it simply does not feel like they did anything special around this time. 2/5. I could see Autumn plains fitting them though.
Sylvan: I think people liked Sylvan a lot in H5 and that compared to the other known H6 factions, they would be unique with their ranged and fast guerilla-like playstyle. Around this time, their mother tree was burned and the Dark elf plot starts. The only terrain I could imagine them in is Autumn plains, someone suggested that all of Irollan was reduced to plains when the Mother Tree died. A Dark elf expansion would be very coherent with Sylvan. 4/5.
Dungeon: I think most people preffered to old Dungeons and think Dark elves are ridiculous but Dark elves are still part of the Ashan universe and it would be silly to retcon them. Dungeon still seemed like a liked faction in H5 because of their empowered spells etc. Underground would be perfect for their terrain but tbh, they fit better as an expansion race (fits perfectly with the story). 3/5.
Academy: Academy is a very classic faction, I can't really imagine a Heroes game without the Titan. Academy has already been mentioned several times. They are mentioned so many times in the Necropolis text and Ghosts are said to be "fast surgical strikes similar to the Wizards' Djinns".
A human cousin would fit really well here. I think an Academy in the jungle would look incredible and fit with the Rakshasa creature (which I hope stays). They could also fit on Autumn plains though. 4/5
So I think the 2 most likely for the fourth faction are Academy and Sylvan. Academy have already been mentioned but the Wood elves got major lore around this time and they have not been mentioned so it makes more sense for it to be Sylvan if they want to surpise us but then, I think Ubisoft thinks its a bit unnesscessary to have two elven races.
It is impossible for me to choose. Both make a lot of sense.

Hmmm I guess ur right...
at any rate I'm just glad we are getting a heroes 6
so as long as the surprise race is not angry vegetables I will be fine with it

Of course its the academy only a wizard can make a tomato become a monster ! And be devoured in the end.
God i so wish it wouldn't be Sylvan, easy puzzle.
Also, it kinda makes me think maybe it is fortress from h3, with lizards and gnolls.
Or since tomatoes are an unstoppable barbaric foe, it could be barbarians, stronghold.
Not enough leakage  .

Oh, you've picked my interest now.
What beast men are we talking about? Rakshasas? Minotaurs? Lizardmen? Werewolves? Or maybe something more exotic like Tiger-men or Man-eating Dinosaurmen?

Well the timeline explicitly mentions minotaurs, centaurs and harpies, beyond that it's guesswork.

Well, nothing new here. Beast-men already are in different factions. We have Minotaurs with Dungeon and Centaurs with Stronghold. Of course, if Ubi decides to declare all possible humanoids (other than the Elder races) to be Beast-men (created by Wizards), then we'll see even more of them in probably more than 2 factions.
