the latest album is pretty bland and I hear a lot of it echoing monsters ball or whatever the name of her second album is. She was reaching for the best album of the decade and fell mighty short.

I agree it's not really an album of a decade - did she say she reached for that, or are people just making assumptions for her?

I actually like much of the album, I just think 17 songs are way too many, particularly given the somewhat uneven quality of them. I think if some of the worse tracks were removed (Marry The Night, Heavy Metal Lover and The Queen in particular are low points for me) it would have been a much stronger release and also more managable in length.

I think one of the qualities of the second disc of Fame Monster (Monster disc) was that it was so devoid of filler material; it had only 8 tracks, but at least 7 of those could have been major hits (the fact that Alejandro, which was arguably the weaker of the lot, faired so well gives testimony to that).

I know it works Alci I say so in the rest of my post. And please just because something is succesfull doesn't make it good or right. My issue with Lady GaGa isn't that she is succesfull but the reason why she is succesfull as I've explained earlier. It's just so... cheap.

Well yes I agree with you to some extent - I think it's silly when people follow pop stars with the same blind adoration as you find in religious cults - and admittedly, you see a lot of that surrounding Gaga. However, I also find it curious that people react so strongly on the whole costume thing - so what, she wears (excuse the pun) gaga costumes? Yeah, it was a way of gaining attention, and perhaps even a way of covering the fact that she doesn't exactly have the diva looks that normally are necessary to make it in showbiz. You may approve or not, and I understand why people may see it as a way to create hype around something that's not really that outstanding - but why the hate?

Personally, I don't think she got where she is today just because of the costumes. Yeah, they made people pay her attention, but if she hadn't been able to hold the attention, she would have died out soon again. In a way, the costume thing is actually working against her now, because I honestly think she's a capable musician and songwriter (even if there are some missers on her albums), but people don't really see that - they just see the flesh dress and whatelse.

That being said, I think the meat dres was hillarious and a huge FU to the whole fashion industry.

Mozart and Beethoven were criticized while they were 'pop artists' of their respective times, yet history applauds them for their musical brilliance. The same can be said for figures like Brittany Spears, Justin Beiber, and Lady Gaga.

Among those with the luxury of access at the time, Mozart and Beethoven both performed for the masses, and they both had a reputation for their eccentric mannerisms, not unlike the popular artists of today.

If Justin Beiber was born several hundred years ago, he would have been Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. They are one in the same.

@Alci

The only reason I mentioned The Beatles and Deep Purple at first were because I think it's ridiculous to have a thread like this. I mean, how about I go and make a The Beatles appreciation thread or maybe a The Cure appreciation thread. With so many of those threads this forum would become quite ridiculous which I think this is and why this is in the Tavern I have no bloody idea because this thread could well have been discussed in the music thread in the VW. I guess moderators won't have a problem if I make multiple threads of all MY favourite artists and making appreciation threads.

Also, when I said that today's music is crap, that is my opinion and I never state that as a fact. I think I even said "imo" after it just so it wouldn't get made out to be a fact but it did. Which is a shame.

There is no musical innovation nor originality nor substance with any of Lady Gag's work. Sure, she may be an okay entertainer, I don't like her at anything she does but can say that she is an okay entertainer even though I don't like her. There is no substance in any of her lyrics, the beats and melodies are unoriginal, bland and downright atrocious and she looks grotesque. To succeed in the musical business nowadays, you have to at least look good. Many people think she does, but I think she looks grotesque. Her costumes are disgraceful and makes her look more like a fool than she already portrays herself to be. She can't sing for **** and her melodies, like I have said, are bland, boring and unoriginal. There is no substance in ANYTHING she does. And if you, Alci, didn't understand this time, this is MY OPINION and NOT a fact.

So just to say it again, this thread is ridiculous and why it's in the Tavern I have no idea and probably will stay here just because you're a mod. In saying that, if I was to make threads of the same calibre just with different artists, they'd probably be moved to the VW, like this thread deserves to be. This forum would quickly degenerate into ridiculousness if everybody made threads appreciating their favourite artists. I mean, come on?

Oh wait, Clouded one, allow me to illuminate you on the matter.

You. Tu. Alcibiades.

Know. (means: Understand)

Both .(you and Jizzy)

of. (pronoun/adverb/whatchamacallit to indicate more info is coming after it)

you. (Tu, Alci and TU, Jizzy)

could. (expresses a "pos-si-bi-li-ty")

blend. (something done by a blender... or an excessively industrious mixologist)

in. (expresses a "lo-ca-tion", or altneratively a *PLACE*)

just. (adverb to increase the drama in the sentence *drum pound*)

well. ("Good" for Advanced English speakers)

on. (like "in", expresses a "place" in the context (= intention of meaning) of this sentence. (btw: Yeah, I never got the use of the vowel change either).)

Survivor Sucks. (This is neither fact nor statement. It is a website which hosts the most rabid (and cynical) Reality TV fanbase in the world, which I -at times reluctantly- am a part of.)

and. (sentence hasn't finished yet, as I'm going to add more power to the punchline)

their. (by that I mean the posters at Sucks, aka the "Sucksters")

share. (to barter without asking something in return. Also used to express a distict demograph in a population)

of (see above)

resident. (adjective that indicates somebody "dwells in a aforementionned location")

raging. ("Adrious")

Gagatards. (Fans of Lady Gaga that will attack and sew you into low-fat bacon purse at the first sign of GaGa hate)

Good Grief. (Read "Peanuts" plz)

Clear? ^__^

But this is how music has always works. Famous, contemporary musicians are often seen as show-offs and eccentric, yet are still popular, and overtime people start to see them as brilliant.

Justin Beiber = John Lennon = Elvis Presley = Richard Wagner = Wolfgang Mozart. They're all basically made of the same stuff and have the same intellectual brilliance and incredible talent for music. If anything, people like Beiber, Spears, and Gaga are actually a little higher standard than people like Mozart since they've had far more competition and have risen in spite of it.

Justin Beiber was helped by Usher. How in the hell does he have as much talent as the others you mentioned? Lady Gaga at least was determined enough to make it on her own. Not that she can be compared to any of those artists you mentioned by you mentioning Justin Beiber in the same sentence as Lennon, Presley and Mozart just makes me sick.

And I do not think you have a single idea of how music works. You just proved that to me.

Also, Spears can't be compared to Gaga. Gaga is new, Spears was popular a few years ago now and is way out from her best, not that her best was any good imo. You have Beiber and Gaga competing now. Back then, you had a lot of people competing. There were many classical musicians that were competing with Mozart and all and many argue who is better and all. Of course it doesn't have the sales but nobody and I mean NOBODY can argue that they are not intellectually superior to musicians of these days. They were another level and I don't even listen to Classical that much but the stuff they did was much more original, technically complex and just breathtaking. You have no idea what you're on about if you think Gaga and Beiber can be compared to Mozart and you are making yourself look like the biggest fool right now mate. Seriously.

Apart from the fact that perhaps I should have made it in Other Side, I don't really see the problem. If you like to make a thread about The Beatles, go ahead. And I don't see other artist threads around drowning the forum, so I don't really see the problem ... if it happens, I'm sure someone will deal with it in time.

I don't understand this statement - do you mean that you don't like how she sings, that you don't like her voice, or what? Because objectively I would say she can sing and hold a tone very well.

And any artist that gets on the bad side of the pope because she depicts Jesus and the disciples as a motor cycle gang is relevant to me.
