Hey, it's you who are the hater.

But I agree, the pictures were interesting. I lol'ed at the Slipperman comparison (Peter Gabriel from the Genesis days).

Noct, you either didn't really read my post, or the reptile on your avatar gives off a rather misleadingly optimistic impression concerning your intelligence.

I'd personally put my money on both, but real secretly, so as not to offend you or anything. After all, we've just met.

Actually, Bak, I also found your post to be quite scathing. Even if you did not intend it that way, being labeled among "all those with bad music taste" by someone who obviously thinks that his (better) taste allows him to evaluate the rest of us is quite offensive.

Usually I don't pop on musical threads because it is not my business to "taught" you anything, everyone is free to enjoy, listen and discuss whatever he likes. Unlike a few other top posters who keep repeating us how great they are without showing any serious references. I only interfered when I saw the GAGA= Mozart because it went too far to just let it.

I only gave my professional opinion. I practice music at very high level, so I guess having 30+ discography, more than ten first international prizes and teaching in best musical french university give me a few credits? Not trying to sound snob, but I deeply analyzed those things for 20 years already.

You can google my name: Valery Rogatchev to see my activities.

But as I said, if you say you like it, I have no arguments. Arts are not something quantifiable. Fortunately.

Of course that Gaga and Mozart comparison was non-sense, as I have said. I am also a very big classical music fan. But the point of mine, and I guess Blizzard's while calling you "Judgmental Jerry" is your doing your criticisms from an ivory tower. As I have already said I have known people who also practice classical music at the highest level as a performer who listen to many pop singers lovingly. And those people would blush when they got praised.

I remember even when someone (I witnessed that), unaware of who he is talking to said "You don't know anything about music" to one of them, the man didn't even respond.

But you come and say "I perform music a very high level. I have that many albums." You should be a little humble. Of course these are thing to be respected but not when you show them with that attitude. No offense.

You guys are taking it all too seriously anyways.

So I think her music sucks. Big deal. I've known 90% of people here since they joined, if anyone thinks I'm trying to insult them maliciously, they simply didn't get to know me yet.

Except maybe for an occasional pickle here and there. Which is nothing really important anyway.

We're a community, aren't we. If I'm part of some kind of community, I like to talk to others pretty openly and like we've already known each other for a while. And it was always alright for folks I know and me to trade opinions like that, and the occasional harshness simply adds to the goofiness of a usually relatively pointless discussion.

But let's blame this on the cultural differences and move on.

In conclusion, let me state clearly and with much joy that you've all been forgiven for disagreeing with me.

Everything cool now? Alrighty, now where were we - ah yes. Alc, for chrissakes, man, how can you listen to this crap?!

(that's a rhetorical question.)

I feel somewhat awkward mentioning this in retrospect.... but I was trolling whenever I said Gaga was on par with Mozart. And admittedly, while I got a ton of laughs out of it, it probably wasn't a very nice thing to do since this is the Tavern, but the way people were showing so much angst in Alcy's innocent thread gave me the urge to deploy countermeasures. I played in the band in high school, and you don't need to be a professional musician to know that Mozart was exceedingly more impressive.

Considering that in 10 years of forum posting I never brought in any thread my "prizes" or my real life job and I even keep myself out of any music thread, I think it answers your question, like me who answered to Blizz specific question: "what gives you the right to judge". Answer: my job, I am in. After all, when you talk science, here comes Corribus saying "shut up, I am the scientist here"

Btw, it is GAGA on front page of my news paper today, coincidence?

And you did not answer my previous question: is Fazil Say your pianist friend? I am curious.

No. But you know that I won't answer to who he is Also, I really do not like Fazil Say. Neither his playing nor his being a media-lover or his personality.

Well, I made the logical connection: you said you know a famous turkish pianist who enjoys all music styles, and I see only one, Fazil Say. He is a genius, even if critics say his classical behavior is similar to...pop and rock. (pejorative)

Yeah, exactly similar. And believe me he is no genius. Actually the reason he got famous is simply because back in the days when he was not famous, he made "tricks" in his concerts. Like he made people write words on papers than he improvised on what that word made him feel. Cheap for me. But of course most people got mesmerised. He now even curses people who came to wathc him in his concerts if he doesn't like their behaviour. Quick and undeserved fame spoils people

Quite complex personality, touching to many things, having a lot of detractors, but going straight on his way without turning back. A fresh image of Turkey today.

Well, the dominant reason for me to hate him, is that there are pianists who are immensely better than him in Turkey but he got to be that worldwide famous only. And secondly, I hate pianists who think playing fast is equal to playing good. That's main reason I do even reject listening to Cziffra and Arrau. And Say also plays ever piece like they are all Liszt pieces, no emotion at all. That being said, I also do not like his compositions.

Anyway, I think I am very off topic right now

Actually, the very reason I picked on you was because I thought your post yesterday was below your usual standard.

And all this talk about good and bad music, I think what got me and Nocturnal out of our boxes were not so much the claim that Gaga = Mozart was a rediculous statement, because obviously the two can in no way be compared - and if you wanted to make the analogy of Gaga being our day's Mozart, I would find it way off, as I don't think she's anywhere near the calibre to merit such a comparison (bring in someone like Kate Bush, and we're talking).

That being said, compairing pop music to clasical music is a bit like compairing a cake to whole wheat bread. From a health perspective, there is of course no discussion that whole wheat bread is the better product, but that does not change the fact that sometimes, it's nice to enjoy a good cake - and that there are certainly quality differences between cakes.

In the same way, there are different times for different kinds of music. While I'm not into classical music myself, I listen to other kinds of music which I would say has considerable quality and substance - but that does not prohibit me from also listening to and enjoying pop music. And I'd still say that as pop music these days go, Gaga is better than she gets credit for - even if she is not innovative.

And does the amount of space and time she gets in the media surpass what her talent merits? Arguably. But credit to her for knowing how to garner that attention (even if it might turn against her in the long run).
