Total war has been adopting RPG elements since M:TW eg: dread and chivalry.

That hardly makes it a RPG.

Well by definition RPG is 'role playing game'. Total war enables you to make decisions that affect the morality and traits of your generals, and hell, often times I considered a few of my generals to be 'me'
And with chivalry and dread, I can better shape the outlook of my general(s).

The Portuguese attacked my England and Ireland a few times. And as venice I had to have a strong navy cause the Portuguese and Sicily would send fully armoured knights to my island settlements (I hoped to sink the ships before they land, 3-4 groups of knights sieging my remote settlements is not something I want to have to worry about)
Strange. At me, AI was acting as if he was afraid of water. I played as Spain, and I conquered France, and now I'm in war with Sicily (north Italy). I also possess Sardinia and Corsica. The war is currently mostly matched (nobody has captured a single opponents town for now). Sicily has quite good navy, but they have never attacked those weakly defended islands.
Also, around 100 years before, I was in war with France. They had a big army near one of my castles, but I ignored them because they were on Crusade, and they were near ships (so they could go to Crusade). But they weren't moving! They neither boarded on ships nor they besieged me! They weren't doing anything! I killed them later when I brought a bigger army.

I had a similar issue as Venice, there was a french army parked right outside on a bridge (only access to venice via land) since the French were allies and that army was on a crusade I couldn't attack them, luckily I had plenty of ships to aid in the transportation of troops, but it was still very annoying at first. When I was being invaded by milan and the HRE, the frenchies became useful as a 'shield' defending my capital. (most of my armies were in the Balkans or the holy land at the time)

Heh. I had similar problem in TATW. My dwarven spy couldn't have passed Anduin, because Cair Andros and Osgiliath were blocked by armies.

I'm kick starting multiplayer across ALL Total wars (except Napoleon) if anyone is interested in playing with or against me I'd be more than happy to oblige, I'm a little nooby atm, but as I said, I aim to crash-course my multiplayer skills (which will then improve my tactical gameplay offline)

Got a problem with Shogun 2... whenever I try and make a formation consisting of more than one unit (using the right click button to hold and drag into desired formation) it just doesn't work.
I just get some screwed up formation that cannot be altered, it's like all over the place, Weirdly enough I'm sitting at a lan atm and the guy next to me has the same problem.
Thoughts? Help us out guys.

Ima have a look into it.
Edit: It seems perfectly fine for me, though at first I messed it up since I tried to use *shift + 1/2/3/4* for formations, like in rome or MTW, but in Shogun you use *alt + 1/2/3/4*. (shift 1 swaps your people between loose formation)
Le'me know if this was the problem.

No no, it's when you hold right mouse button and drag the formation that is the problem.

I keep getting my ass handed to me, and I refuse to turn down the difficulty, but getting my capital taken by overwhelming forced at turn 3 is not cool.

Okay finally I found a good clan the Chosokabe (masters of the bow) I love alot of the new concepts int Shogun 2, including having raid-able farms/lumber mills/ports outside of your town, so if someone is hold up in strong defensible position you can still raid their livelihood. The character and clan progression through researching and level ups are also pretty juicy.
Also I adore the fact that arrows stick into enemy troops, but one thing that I hate is how damn accurate arrows are. (twas similar as in RTW but here it's a little-bit bothersome, MTW did it almost perfect) Come to think of it, might be due to the fact that I'm using elite samurai archers.
That's the enemy general :3.
Edit 28th of July:
My warlord executing the last unit of a rival clan. (I have my generals on foot, far more badass)
I defeated his main army, my 950 men vs 1500 conscripts, most of my army was composed of samurai archers, I lost 500 men and he lost 900, the rest fled into his hold where I annihilated the remnants of his army, but I did suffer 200 men casualty thanks to the long range of his archers. (they get like 200-300 range, damn castle walls, while my archers have 150)
This game reminds me somewhat of Heroes 6, due to the extensive 'choice' to traits and research, (even retinue).
Edit: So I tried my hand at multiplayer (avatar one, wanted to create a 'hero' :3) I won 3 battles vs bots and got a hang of my limited units, then I faced off a human player.
He had:
-2 groups of ponies and his general,
-one samurai archer group
-the rest swordsman
I had
-one samurai spearman group, and normal spear group
-my (dismounted) archer general
-The rest samurai archers ( 5 groups)
I placed the spearmen on the flanks and two samurai archer groups set to ambush (so I was on the defensive) his army moved at snail's pace to the middle of the map, and I advanced further aswell without compromising my position, but alas he captured all the points, at which point I advanced and we exchanged arrows, at which point he withdrew, with 3 min left before I lose I dispatched my two hidden archers to capture a point, but the enemy realized this and sent his cavalry to intercept, they were annihilated, but kept me from capturing the point before the counter ran out .
I just downloaded bloodpack dlc (you know, to increase immersion ) and began looking for mods, hopefully ones that don't compromise my multiplayer, since I be spending alot on it I think.

I'm severely trying to get into Shogun 2 but I just can't get the battles to work for me.
As soon as my forces collide with the enemy I just get so massively confused by everything that I just turn off the game.
Am I winning? Am I losing? Are those guys fleeing? Oh those are exhausted? NO KEEP FORMATION! NO RUN FASTER! NO DON'T WALK! YOU'RE ALL ON ****ING FIRE GODDAMN YOU ALL ****ING FARMER PIECE OF **** I'LL HUNT DOWN YOUR FAMILY YOU IGNORANT RETARDED **** JUST HOLD THE ****ING POINTY END TOWARDS THE HORSIES OH GOD.

Quote: NO KEEP FORMATION
Good god, one battle my army refused to march together, from a line formation they managed to make a damn wedge by the time they reached the enemy.
Takes some getting used to, the hotkeys and the game.
In other total war games I had a clear perception of the battlefield, and even once the battle started I could re-allocate troops to hard pressed flanks, (I had my infantry marked in three separate hotkeys, left mid and right) or make an all out assault on a weakened flank, here I had great difficulty just getting my peeps to walk in the same direction, let alone do anything 'fancy'. But as I said, takes getting used to.
And EVERY time my general engages combat, my adviser screams that he's in mortal danger. NO ****, it's a damn battle! In other games I was only told when my general is close to death.
The hysterical screaming of my advisers is not only greatly annoying, it's often misleading, example: MY LORD!!!! A great victory is at hand! (he says my lord in such a dismayed way that I ALWAYS think that something dreadful had happened) and their very poor english is a major downside that I doubt I'll ever get used to.

****, I remember last time I played a strategy game like this.
Quote: Now playing Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
*starts campaign*
Wow they sure send a lot of stuff at me at once... just the first mission... Ah well I did play the SupCom demo for a while... and at least the map is kinda small.
*1 hour later*
**** yeah eat that b*****!! Aeon Tempest roxxor!
"OPERATION AREA EXPANDED"
*map doubles in size*
Holy... ****
*1 hour later*
"OPERATION AREA EXPANDED"
I'm... I'm scared...
Just gonna... just gonna spam these giant robots...
*40 minutes later*
"OPERATION AREA EXPANDED"
Another enemy?!!
"STRATEGIC LAUNCH DETECTED"
NUKES?! He has nukes?!
And I learned how to play that, all about the hotkeys.
I just found the advance formation, rotate formations and stuff buttons. Very handy.

Remember that the AI spearmen will always try to intercept your cavalry and the AI swordsmen will most likely go for your spearmen (that's on Hard at least) and you can manipulate it like a puppet. And if you have any access to high ground, go for it as soon as possible - the AI has absolutely no clue how to react in such situations and will just throw its forces against your lines in pretty disordered manner. Statistics - some 1500-strong Takeda army (mine) vs. 2200 Uesugi men (the AI), qualitatively the opposing army is better than mine and the battle ends with about 300 lost men for me and 1900 for it just because it decided to assault a hill without any kind of manoeuvres under a rain of arrows.

The AI is more sophisticated than other TWs, but can still be exploited, they turtle only until hit. When hit multiple times (in some cases,) they unleash their full force at you.
