More flamboyant than purple?
Not a fan of the H5 manticore, but it's actually the most accurate depiction of a manticore in all of the HoMM games (the head looks vaguely dude-like)

If I were previously in a faction (H6) and then kicked to the curb to roam the lands alone (H5), I'd probably not look as good either.

Am I the only one who always thought that the Heroes 5 manticore is absolutely repulsive and a joke at the same time? It does not even have a lion face and the colours are sickening. H6 manticore looks cool though as long as you ignore the penis-tail that someone was kind enough to point out.
(After reading the comments that appeared while writing I discovered I was not alone in my hatred for the H5 manticore)

Most of the Heroes III unit design are like a canon for me in terms of how a unit should look in the series. Not that I want to see clones in every other Heroes games, it's just that I always liked those designs the most. The same goes for the Manticore so I was happy to see their H VI comeback in a form similar to that of H III.
On a side note, as I was quite young in 1999, and I didn't have too much of an experience with the fantasy genre or myths, I always thought that Manticores looked more lion-esque, like they were depicted in Heroes III. Only later I found out that they are a Persian myth, and usually they have an ugly human mug for a face. THE horror link!

That awkward moment where H4 was more accurate in the Medusa design than the others.

Oh that's interesting. I wonder if 3DO actually knew that or if it was just sheer luck
Reading that made me wonder about something, does Ashan have sphinxes?

I doubt 3DO cared as they were only the distributor.
You're thinking of JVC and NWC, in which case I have no doubt since JVC is a huge DnD nerd and that propably propagated an interest in mythology as well (unless that came first, I wouldn't know for sure).
And if Ashan has Sphinxes, they're probably related to the lamassu.
And called Sphincters or something

There were Sphinxes in Heroes V. Functioning the same way as they did in Heroes II & III.
From what I recall they looked rather statue-like. But that may well have been retconned by now.

Yeah, I meant NWC. And yes that's my guess too, since the lamassu looks pretty much the same, except dead and with batwings

*looks*
Oh yeah
Well, they could always say that it is a magical sphinx statue. Differences (if the creature were to actually show up) could be explained just by saying it's an artistic interpretation done.
That or since the Lamassu experiment flopped, sphinxes are made of stone a la golems
