======================
situation 1:

regarding magic mirror.

lets say player 1 has 5 arch devils and 100 familiars

player 2 has 1 archangel with magic mirror on it

If player 1 casts implosion on player 2's archangel, and magic mirror repels the spell against the arch devils, I wonder if the familiars will drain mana from the deflected spell Lol. so ultimately the caster kills a few of their devils on error but gets a few spell points back

wonder if that can happen?

=======================================

situation 2:

Also wonder if it's possible for a spell to be deflected twice:

1) player 1: 1 devil, 1 efreet, 1 pit fiend.  the devil has magic mirror
2) player 2: 1 angel, 1 champion, 1 pikeman.  the angel has magic mirror

player 1 cast implosion on player 2's angel.  Angel repels the implosion back to the devil of player 1 which also has magic mirror.  The devil repels the spell AGAIN, and it hits the 1 pikeman of player 2

is the above possible?   If so I wonder how it would "look" on the screen.  E.g. would both deflections be seen?  Or would the pikeman just get hit directly with the implosion EVEN THOUGH the angel was targeted LOL

Ok example of Tower team, Titan have mind immune, you can cast a magic mirror to M. Gremlins or A. Magi and you have Pendant of Total Recall. So I cast to Green Dragons and use a Pendant of Dispassion. RoE style and you learnt about AB. When not only a slow, because spells after move, so etc

For a level 5 spell, Magic Mirror is very narrow, and underwhelming. First of all, on Expert level it does nothing 60% of the time. With Basic or less, the odds of doing nothing is 80% ! That's not accounting for the fact that more than half of commonly cast spells are cast on friendly units, and some are cast on neither (like Force Field).

For a level5 spell, it should be a mass spell. If you want to protect a single target, Antimagic is already very attractive.

This reminds me of Slayer. In Heroes 2 it was a good spell, because mass spells were so rare. There was only Mass Slow (level 4), Mass Haste (level 3), and Mass Bless (level 3?), Mass Curse and I believe Mass Shield. A +8 to attack stands out among these. Stoneskin gives +3 in Heroes 2, Steelskin gives +6. So Slayer in Heroes 3 sucks because they thoughtlessly lumped more stuff on top of Heroes 2, without reviewing what's already there.

Slayer is not that bad. Is common situation in single custom maps to meet zounds of dragons here and there, and after the regular buffs-prayer/shield-, the only one being really effective is slayer, mostly because frenzy does not work when prayer applied.

Slayer can be useful in utopias on occasion. It is probably the coolest looking, worst spell though.  Should be better based on the way it looks

Best looking, worst spell: inferno (and that's hard for me to admit as I'm an Inferno player)

Yes, slayer is certainly not bad if you only have a single stack anyway and enter an utopia. But that's a very selective thinking. Would you scream "overpowered!" if the spell was level 2 ? Or if Magic Mirror was level 3 ?

Slayer is good magic,That's right. All two spells are effective.Prayer adding bonus attack streight, defense streight and speed.Slayer incrases the amount of damage against hydras, dragons and behemonts. So,both are good.

Normally zounds of dragons should be engaged with one powerful stack only, yes. It is easier to keep casualties low in this way.

What do you think is the best / worst spell for each level in combat?

Best Spells (my opinion)

Level 1: Slow (Earth) - Marginally ahead of Haste because I like shooters.

Level 2: Blind (Fire) - By far my most useful level 2 or Level 3 spell.

Level 3: Force Field (Earth) - Mainly because it is just so much fun when it comes off.

Level 4: Resurrection (Earth) - My troops are too valuable to lose.

Level 5: The two best Level 5 spells are for overland travel and I seldom use Level 5 spells in combat. To pick one I would probably go with Implosion (Earth).

Worst Spells (mainly these are the spells I don't use)

Level 1: Curse (Fire) - I prefer offensive spells.

Level 2: Death Ripple (Earth) - Because I never use undead troops.

Level 3: Hypnotise (Air) - For me it only seems to work on the enemies weaker troops.

Level 4: Fire Shield (Fire) - I find it of limited use.

Level 5: Sacrifice (Fire) - My troops are too valuable to waste.

Actually, any hero with any unit can use death ripple if he/she wears the Pendant of Life. It is a common artifact and i think it's real function is to be able use death ripple rather than getting protected from it. Death Ripple is perfect to rob scouts who distribute their few units in different slots to be able to escape.

No need for pendant, just one healthy creature. If death ripple does less damage than its HP, you have the perfect one battle round-scout killer. Usually one level 5-6 creature does the job.

"Level 5: Sacrifice (Fire) - My troops are too valuable to waste."

Cmon, in final battle sacrifice can be awsome. Let's say the enemy has been killing your level 7s and left alive all the dwarves/gryphons/pikemen...

I'd still rather use Resurrect. Those dwarves etc are the very reason I have reached the final battle. I have nurtured and defended them throughout the whole game and in turn they have won me a lot of territory and resources. To throw them on the scrapheap during the final battle for a momentary advantage seems rather callous to me. But then - each to his own.

So what are your favourite/least favoured spells then batoonike?

Regarding Death Ripple, those are good points and I might need to have another look at that spell.

It's not that hard to raise a lot more hit points with Sacrifice than resurrect.  It's not a spell you use to recoup minor losses in a trivial battle, and if you have a big enough stack of level 7s it might take several casts to fully resurrect them, but only a single cast of Sacrifice, and that level 7 stack may make a lot more difference toward winning the battle than the low level stack.  (i.e. you may not have the time to cast resurrect several times).  I haven't had much need of it myself because when playing against the CPU, it usually targets the low level stacks first, but it's certainly a powerful spell in certain situations.

"Normally zounds of dragons" is a self-contradictory sentence. Zounds of dragons is not normal. The game has been designed for relatively small number of creatures, stats, and levels. That's why there's a limited number of skill slots. The gap between Attack&Defense and Spell Power&Knowledge widens as the game progresses.

Only degenerate maps have zounds of dragons. It highlights author's poor understanding of the game and bad taste. Every game has its decline phase, where smarter people with better taste and  move on to other games, and content generated is mostly crap.
--------------

dalgo:

Regarding Sacrifice, check the table I posted on the previous page. Once you have 10 spell power, you can sacrifice 1 week of imps to resurrect 1 week of archdevils. Completely. Basic and Advanced levels of Fire Magic are worth 3 spell power each, while Expert is worth 4. So at 8 spell power and expert fire you can resurrect 2 weeks of archdevils per 1 week of imps. I would say it's a good deal.

Inferno is not a great spell, sure, it has a huge area to cover but it isn't good and I never use it.  Might be because I don't play longer games that until about month 11~ on large maps, but by that that time I already have some great spells, such as Implosion, Chain Lightning etc. Inferno only needs to deal more damage and it would have been great. Although the animation is awesome and looks very realistic.

Month 11? Even Implosion is pretty much useless in month 11.
