Where can I download only the portrait PCX files to substitute into Heroes 3?

You can extract them from our technical portrait topic on the official Russian DF2 forum branch. However I must warn you that many of them are currently under development and placed only as placeholders. They have very different format, quality and degree of completeness.
They are all in 24 bit PNG though. If you are not skilled in dealing with Heroes 3 image formats, I would just advise to download the latest open version of the mod and use MMArchive to extract the portraits. You will anyway need this program to replace the classic Heroes 3 ones.

Okay, here is a small update concerning townscreens.
As many of you may not know, Heroes 2 townscreens were made by mostly 3D modeling, not pixel art. So that we were not able to avoid this, and now we try to achieve the same grained texture and specific look of the townscreen assets.
This update presents mostly the castle, because all other assets are put just for test. However, we think that the castle is already close to the classic Heroes 2 feeling. Additional 2D post-treatment is expected.
For those who are interested in the pencil concepts I've quickly done on a boring university course, here they are. However, the final form of the buildings will be different.

that townscreen is awesome. i only have one problem with it; which is the top right building, as the contrast is too high on it(lights are too light, mids are nearly non-existent). other than that, stellar job.

Like I said, all assets except the castle are put just for test. The texture and lighting will be worked out right after we will finally decide the overall arrangement/composition of the townscreen buildings.
Even the castle was an experiment - we wondered if it is even possible to achieve such a grainy texture like the classic H2 screens have. It seems that we are close to success, at least with the stone structures.

No worries. We are actually have gone farther with the screen, and working out the last tricky things about the buildings disposition:
After that we will work out the building concepts more carefully, and finally use the street magic to make all this fit to H2. At least I hope that it will fit, lol.

Damn! that's really spooky! On an unrelated note, I found a game with a very similar art style to H2: it's called palm kingdoms.
They where obviously heavily "inspired" by Heroes but I think there are some nice stuff they did, anyway, I was curios what you think of it

I am personally familiar with the Palm Kingdoms developer.
They also have another game, Royal Bounty HD which was recently accepted in Greenlight.
The old mod version contains a lot of content from Palm Heroes/Kingdoms, but I suppose we will make new assets to replace it.
