Huh? ALL villains have redeeming properties: either they are "born evil", then they are not responsible and more like a predator, or they have some however twisted reason for being the way they are. Even the most arrogant and unscrupulous king has been raised to be one.
Evil tends to be rather trivial, on closer look, while good tends to be rather stiff and wooden.
The only really good evil stories that come to mind are the slippery slope ones - things start with a single slip, a mishap, a wrong decision, a weak moment, and from then on, one step and one decision follows the next, until you have the monster. Stories like Breaking Bad, for example. Or The Shield.

SoD, by the way, will have a look into Sandro's past and deliver a reason why he so completely lost it and how he lost his face. I'm not sure whether that won't spoil the fun for some here.

the problem in ubi characters imho
is that they all have some generic cliche features!
a vast majority, i 'd say..

if they give them more individuality
with good storywrighting
that can make a difference
even in infamous ashan plot

p.s.
i actually dont understand why
is HoMM 3 story is praised so much!
there are not that many characters
and campaigns that were really good!
the game itself was Greatest of course
but as for story and campaigns
much weaker than HoMM 4 vanilla for example

@ JJ read books from the eastern block. Sapkowski, etc. There is a fresh wind there when it comes to style in fantasy.
But generaly I agree

If you ask me what kind of story would I expect from a game

It would be multiple stories, not cennected directly at best
(Something like Armagedons blade or Heroes IV), to get the best idea of the world.
The story should evolve with the game. (Heroes has a lot of RPG features, but yet you do not have the feeling of major changes in the game).
Do not give all the information to the player served on a silver plate.

And apart from all this.
TIME LIMITS to make the story feel real.
Heroes VI has several maps that really could use some kond of a time limit, like the Falcons reach siege or the second map in Crag's DLC

There are a few in SoD, I think. Time limits, I mean.

I agree, of course - I did write that all these constraints (like having one biiiig "epic" campaign story) are making things even more difficult (as if "computer game" and "fantasy" wouldn't be enough of a constraint).
Can there really be another result than cheap/cliché?

Cliché is not necessarily bad IMO, it's how it is written that determines what I feel about a story.

I think the main problem is not in the "Computer game" genre or cliché. Both can be made in an entertaining way that is able to not insult the gamer.

On the other hand Cheapness and forcefully trying to be EPIC is the problem that causes such bad results.

Edit:
Also I think the game should not be directed by thy story.
A game should be functional by itself, and a story should just use its potential. Not the other way around.

I understand this from a story perspective, but on a personal note, I absolutely abhor time limits (unless they're royal; For instance, "The Festival of Life" campaign (Armageddon's Blade expansion, H3) has 3 of its 4 mission with a time limit, but they're fairly royal. You can explore the maps entirely with relative ease (you just can't sit idling in your towns for weeks, but you don't have to anyway) and still meet the time limit).

I hate rushing maps and having to skip parts of it. I'm the kind of player who wants to fully explore a map, visit every nook and cranny, defeat all neutral stacks on the map and collect all treasures. As you might also guess, I also dislike maps that have part of it unexplorable. Even if there's nothing there, I still want to reveal what's under the shroud. My ideal map has no spat of shroud left when I'm done and ready to complete it.

i remember Ubi promising us a life-time changing battle maps
not only time limits
but changing the landscape, "earthquakes, destruction, magic"!!!
events happening through the battle!

and what we get in the end?
a flag in the middle of combat?
2-3 battles with time limit or dont lose unit?

not much of original promise ei?

I don't really care if they go straight to HVII or if they give us a second expansion.

Normally I'd say we should get more expansions, because HVI has its good points and more or less lacks content in the first place.
However I've read, that it seems to be difficult to add many things to the game, because of the way it is programmed in the first place,so it would be probably for the best if they went straight to HVII

seeing heroes VI complete with no bugs, with 9 factions, each faction having a DLC featuring a certain hero/heroine, and the on going contend being implemented every time in the basic game is a dream coming true.
new fanmade maps every once in a while, light stable game, the story and the mechanics are fine(ok the skill wheel could use some modifications),so is the design of the game.
it would be a game that we would cherish for a long time without getting bored and they could bomb us with a million dlc's and expansions to take our money!
but god forbid, they had to market this game worse than an orc!and that explains their favoritism with stronghold(lame joke this one)!

so yes i'd like to see heroes 6 COMPLETE and PERFECT although i know that now it's a little too much to be done.:/

I don't understand russian, and I don't know if this has been discussed before, but is this artwork of the Djinn and the Rakshasa as neutrals legit? Is that the nail in the coffin for seing Academy return (not that it's much of a surprise, with them saying no second expansion is in the works)?

Eugene is just speculating about possible neutrals, the artworks are taken from the might & magic site
