Switching gears to a different topic...
Hypothetically speaking, do you think the notion of a 2D world map with 3D battles and/or townscreens could be viable and/or acceptable? People seem to like 3D towns and don't seem to oppose 3D battles in concept, but 3D maps tend to have a host of problems that an H3-style map does not. I'm wondering if there's potential for a mixture of both 2D and 3D elements in future instalments.

@Kimarous:
There is always potential to change dimensions of visuals. The question is whether such change is probable. I would answer no. This is a third game made by Ubisoft and knowing their (un)willingness to change their original ideas I wouldn't expect any shift in that aspect.

There is also Thorgal that describes a fantasy viking setting, including dwarves, elves, giants, Gods and.. people of the stars The latter wield powers that seem magic to the people of that age.
The new thundercats uses a combination of magic and sci fi elements.
The witcher is mostly fantasy but includes elements like gunpowder and mutagens.
None of the above detract from the feeling of fantasy as far as I'm concerned.

Speaking of Clash of Heroes, do you know how well it runs on Window 8.1? I've thought about getting it, but many of my older favourites are very finicky on my new PC, probably because of the OS, and since I don't know how to fix them, I've been leery about buying older titles...

Im actually baffled why Ubi hasnt geared more of the MM-franchise to the handheld/phone-tablet market. Clash of heroes is a great game, and perfect for say IPad and iPhone. A sequel should be a no brainer.
And if MMH-games (provided MMH7 isnt their last) wont recive bigger budgets for production they could choose to scale down the 3D-graphics, perhaps choose a more hand drawn (but mature) art style, and primarily focus on gameplay so that theese games can be ported to tablets and phones aswell. Or perhaps make a simplified version for that market, like an app with faction duels focusing on multiplayer.
Either they put enough money into theese games to make them grand, or they have to revitalize and renew the whole concept. The middleground feels like a slow agonizing descend into nothingness.

Theoretically on gog.com games must be working on Windows 8.1. As they do something to source exe's.

Do you have experience with AoW3? They use a campaign map style that is also 3D, but it closely mimics the overall setup of Heroes3: the map is largely symbolic and the height differences are minor as a result. All the relevant items on any given map tile are always clearly visible (Gold, Mana, Unit Stacks, etc ...) over the terrain. I'll see if I can find an example or two.

They use an adaptation of DOSBox to run DOS games on Windows machines, you just don't see the interface that DOSBox usually gives. I don't know what they do to make games from older Windows versions run, though.

Hi Maurice,
i am recently playing AOW3, and about the adventure map I thought the same, that it could fit for Heroes too. Nice that somebody had similar idea.

Fantasy for me is = D&D (minus those horrid clockwork creatures and modrons and that horrible spelljammers), mythology, folklore, many cryptids, swords, arrows, bows, axes and all those weapons, medieval worlds, Tolkien, LOTR, HOMM, Diablo.
SF for me is = Starcraft, Robots, machines, mobile phones and computers in a world with minotaurs (people that want this should di...), guns, steampunk, Starwars, Lovecraft, bizarre aliens (though aliens like Aboleth can work in a fantasy world as long as they don't use mobile phones, laser weapons and guns), and most of all LASER weapons, which little boys seem to be obsessed with, everyone seems to like that in fantasy, but keep that crap in its own genre, where I actually enjoy it, mix is like in FInal Fantasy and WOW and it become utter crap like those games.

Yes to day we get the Hydra, the only creature i'm a little bit curious after.
The other would be the same old dragon again, with the most boring name of all creatures, black dragon... how freaking original.

I loved HOMM3, but the black dragon always has been my frustration point of the game.
100% taken from D&D, where those dragons are also my least favorite creatures.
They are only loved because of nostalgica and because they are dragons and powerful, and Americans love powerful, big things in general, they faint at the thought of a Godzilla in HOMM probably.

well yes they are well liked because they are rare, powerful creatures with a legacy, dragons are the great archetypal monster of myth, I think most people who play fantasy games like dragons and want to slay them or recruit them (even if Erwin is on a crusade to make us all completely sick of them) lol
