Well if you want to know stuff quickly and effortlessly, as I did for debating reasons, the wiki suffices. Playing the games is of course better, but much more time demanding.
I agree with Galaad though, users like Cepheus devoted some time and work in making a comprehensive guide, you could look it up.

Hello. I have the Chronicles texts, but they are in an azw3 format which is suitable for my Ebook reader and must be manually converted. This afternoon I had time to convert the first two, the rest will follow in the next few days (I will be leaving town for the weekend).

I was fond of the heroes chronicles, particularly clash of dragons and the sword of frost.

When I think of good stories from heroes 3, chronicles is what comes to mind. A very intriguing story with every chapter and it really made me appriciate heroes 4's barbarian campaign. Tarnum is true HERO of might and magic 
Clash of dragons was my favorite as it was my first and only one for a long time, and cause it introduced the neutral dragons ofc  was also very fond of warlords of the wasteland and the beast master ones for their stories. The lost heroes 4 tale or whatever features doggwoggle who's one of the bad guys in the first one.

So i read through Cepheus' lore stuff and it was great! It's a bit saddening that he never finished it though. I also wish there where books set in Antagarich, the little story in the Fortress section was quite great.
Btw what is the best way to beat the minotaurs in the Tunnels to Nighon in MM7? I always wanted to visit Nighon myself but never managed to get past them :/ (hopefully i still have some savegames left on my pc.. xD)

In my experience, you can kite them to a small side room (with a small hall and a treasure room at the end) that the Tier 2 and 3 Minotaur can't fit into, making it your little safe haven, and you can plink them down from there. There's a bunch of warlocks in this hall/room though, so you'll need to deal with them first.
Aside from that, get lucky when you first pop into the tunnels. If you see a headsman (The red Tier 3 ones) hope it doesn't kill one of your guys before you can down it.

Sadly i don't have any savegames anymore but i'm gonna remember that
Btw i don't know if anyone knows or cares but ubi has actually been in contact with the mm franchise long before buying it: since 3do bought nwc they have been the german publisher for their games which might have been one reason to buy it.

An interesting bit of trivia at the least, thanks for sharing. I wish they would put a little more effort towards their investment, but I'm glad they saw the value of the IP at least.

On an unrelated note, I've played through MM7 and MM8 several times each, but I've never played MM6. After picking it up and having it promptly kick the crap out of me, I can safely say that game is tough as nails compared to the other two.

Run like a madman. Eventually (and maybe after few loads) you will get out. Don't worry if two or three of your characters die in the process. Helpful priests in Nighon will patch them up just right : >

I like how the Heroes 7 thread is more about NWC Lore, Heroes 3 and 4 and so on than the actual H7 game. It's like nobody cares for it
PS: As H4 factions were discussed quite at lenght, I must mention in my H4 mod which you can find on the H4 version of this forum, all factions are reshuffled and Inferno is back! http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=42758
There's also an H4 conflux planned for soon enough.

There isn't all that much to say. Campaigns are too easy, balance is based on said campaigns(lol) and a lot of the features/abilities/whatever don't even work as intended.

Balance is really based on campaigns? 
Wow, I didn't expect anything and even then they manage to dissapoint me.
Didn't the developers know most HOMM (sorry, "M&M Heroes"  ) players like to play with their friends? Why people still play Heroes 3?
If they wanted special balance for campaigns they can easily do it with scripts, custom maps and/or special heroes...
