Imo H2 had it's charms sure ... but still H1 was superior. Here - my favourite H1 town (the warlock):

You see where do you recruit each creature? And they were animated to boot. This is what gave them life. In H2 and onwards this was lost.

And you all seem to forget. Both H1 and H2 had no civilian buildings. Yes they were military camps. Civilian buildings came with H3. So there.

In that aspect H6 & H7 town screens went back "to their roots". However - It is fair to say, that the reasoning behind this is unknown. It's going back into evolution of seires.

add me to the people who don't like creatures on the screen. I dunno, it makes them seem so...

small. It feels like a tiny village with some random dude just leaning towards a wall, leering at you. kinda bleh... It works sometimes like the dragons circling the cliffs in h3 rampart but they were small and in the distance (and there were a whole bunch of 'em), making the whole place seem large and majestic. The griffon in the above example does add some of that, but it's too big and just feels out of place.

It's like the city has a population of 6-7 peeps all different species.

i guess what i want is a recognizable "pulse" of civilians or inhabitants that walk or fly around. no heroes has done that yet and it would be a natural progression after h5 impressive towns. well the ones that actually were.

also those griffon eggs are huge

Thing is ... back in H1 days it was not ment as much of city as of fort/tower/castle where powerfull wizzard/warlock/knight/fanasy dictator resides with his army. The rest of kingdom, where normal people lives, is supposed to be well ... around that - in fantasy land represented by the adventure map.

In short the "town" isn't a town ... it's base of operations. Or indeed military outpost. So the notion that only 5-6 people live within that isn't strange. It's more than that tho, as castle staff is probably numerous.

Now I admit H2 and tried to improve that .... altho result was qouite similar, and H3 went all the way, by adding proper housing and "civilian stuff" for decoration. And I liked that, but I do miss the creatures. And only the first one had them, with few exeptions, like H3's Sylvan Green Dragon dwelling, and probably others, which i can't remember from top of my head.

The creatures don't add just atmosphere. They are more than that. It means, that when you wanna recruit griffin, you know exactly what building to click. Now-a-days it's useless tho. As UI gives you recruit button, and prior to that, you only clicked one building, where all creatures can recruit from.

I'm probably one of the few people who actualy donsen't mind lack of civilian building in new town screens. I belive they are a nod to old pre-H3 style. My biggest complaint is just that buildings are not distinguishable enough. It's hard to tell at first glance, what is their function. Worst offender in this was Inferno, in both H5 and H6.

thing is ... why civilians? Why not representatives of your faction?

Spiders crawling on the pillars, skeletons marching in formation, once every 5 minutes, and going into the city through the bridge and door opening to let them in ... that kind of thing.

It does not have to be like H1. Those pictures were made in MS Paint, 20 years ago ... Even in H3 we got glimpse of that with dragons circling in back ground. It could be done so much better now. H1 is well ... silly

I said civilians mostly cause that would feel like a natural addition to h5 style cities like haven and academy. Can you tell me civilians would not add a lot of atmosphere to those? that said, i do whole-heartedly agree with your points as well: marching skeletons moving around seems great for a necro screen and griffons flying around haven. it was more the "pulse" i'm talking about. making the town feel inhabited. h1 didn't really succeed since all creatures were just part of their corresponding building. they didn't live there they were just decoration. h3 rampart succeeded for a bit with the dragons but none of them would ever land or stop circling which would've been awesome.

just make sure it's small and almost hard to make out. That way you don't get a very personal attachment to said creatures and it would serve it's purpose better. make it a background event, not part of a building other than them starting to happen once the corresponding dwelling is built.

I'm all in favor of some creatures moving within the town. Some graves with a bit of fog and skeletons and zombies moving through them? Yes, please. As things are now it's just like Maurice said, military outposts...

Up:
Marzhin has stated that townscreens are to be animated but I agree, adding some units and/or civillians would be nice. In Age of Empires III, while you were looking at your metropolis, you were able to hear some comments of the city dwellers. In my opinion this would be really nice to have - some little humoristic comments of the citizens, specific to each faction.

"These scrolls are scorched! Last time I'm using a Cabir courier..."

Dunno why, but for some reason, a recurring mental image for daily life in Academy is a Cabir scurrying from one building to the next with a bundle of scrolls in its arms.

As for Haven, it's a little girl having a flower to a cavalier on horseback as he's about to leave.

Heh heh, I know. In my mind's eye, though, they sorta serve as the catch-all underclass for miscellaneous tasks.

Oh I would like a 2nd dark messiah. Very much so. But I would be more relieved for a new start, seeing Ashan unbound by some of its former restrictions. I does not have to be entirely destroyed but surely there are other continents? Or perhaps the events of dark messiah have REALLY changed things? I want faction societies, lineups and emblematic allies all shaken up. But for H8 to happen, the 7th one will have to turn out successful and keep evolving along its development path, from release till the last addon. Hopefully the ground will be fertile for the successful H7 ideas to carry on and evolve, along with other better ones.

Survival hardcore Dark Messiah 2? Under Ubisoft and Erwan leBreton which got us used to a softcore Might and Magic universe? Em, let's just say that I'm a bit skeptical lol.
