I blame the graphics, but I never actually saw the base Genie as female. More as a youngling, while the upgrade was an elder. Just like I see a dogface on the Demons, while others apparently see a ratface.
Heroes5 has been too long ago for me since I last played it to clearly remember the Rakshasa's graphics for base and upgrade.

I'd simply prefer the dryads to look more like this:
you know, monstruos and treelike and not "magical lady in dress" which is what the pixie is as well.
Mind, i still like both of them (especially pixie. SO VIBRANT!) but they both sort of fill the "floating lady in dress" archetype.

The fact that we voted for this line-up is not really an argument, the vote was a choice between three line-ups that all were flawed, and while I did vote for Fury (and stand by this vote) one of the strongest objections I had against this line-up - apart from the absence of Unicorn - was the Dryad/Pixie duality in core.
When that's said, they could have made the Dryad appear more different. First of all, it's a tree spirit - why then is it floating above ground!? They could also have made it male, if they wanted to differentiate a bit between these units.

IIRC there are only female Dryads, so they should change its name then.

And then people would complain that they have Treant and mini-treant and reused model of treant just scaled down and more female like

Indeed, what Articun said. Despite these more tree-like dryads looking really awesome they are too similar too treants. And if we must have a walking humanoid tree, I much rather have the giant treant than a human sized dryad.
As for turning it into a male, yeah they could have done that but dryads are female by myth. Wouldn't that be a similar offence as calling a two-headed dog 'Cerberus'? Besides, as I already mentioned before, that pixie is not female. Yes, it has all kinds of girly flowery stuff, but what do you expect from a creature born from flowers (or something like that)? If you look a bit more closely at the creature itself you would notice that it is quite androgynous and alien looking. The problematic spring spirit/snow maiden combi consisted of two units that were very obviously female.
Another pre is that the dryad nor the pixie will share their (almost) exact look with an elemental.

"drys" in greek means oak. and dryad comes from that word. and i think druid comes from that word too in greek.
so indeed dryads should have been wooden and coming out of the ground like the mizu kami(i wouldn't mind a wooden mizu kami with her hair upwards like branches and that's what i was picturing for the dryad when i was voting.) i don't know how they came up with the transparent thingy :/
she looks like a hippy too
EDIT:
yeah ok there is the treant situation:/ well in that case she could have worn a wooden armor-like thing. or wooden accessories?

If the problem is the sex of the unit the solution would be to add the Pan instead of Pixie, since Pan and Puck (probable upgrade) are male faeries, somewhat akin to the the species of pixies.

The image you posted shows the make-up of the base Genie quite well, as well as somewhat of a breastsize. Something that I failed to notice in the graphics ingame in H3.

Regarding the Sun Deer/Moon Doe: Yeah it's kinda silly although we can assume they live in the same place, they just "awake" at different times and Deers are bigger and stronger than the does, so it makes kinda sense (unlike the djinn apprentices suddenly becoming male)
Regarding the dryad: iirc they looked like normal pretty greek ladies in myth so anything beyond that is already an improvement XD. The concept looks cool but they look like treants there

Besides, we "have the power" to point out these flaws. It still sounds wierd that an upgrade changes its gender. It happened in H3, in H5 and we are... wiser now to point out the flaw at the correct time. We'll see what Ubi and the devs will do (if anything).

Funny enough, we pointed out the article's name is "ARMIES OF THE SILVA, PART 1" and nobody has bothered to edit that.
Makes we wonder... is this some sort of analogy compared to the game?

For me, the Pixie/Sprite/Dryad issue stems from the fact that the latter two were upgrades of the Pixie in H5, so they were obviously considered the same type of creature then.
