No, Genies are in fact Magic Elementals. The ascention of the 7th Dragon created a whole new elemental plane, that of pure magic. Djinn are the elementals of that. But they are also non-elemental by nature since pure magic is that as well.
As for Inferno Line-ups, as long as Cerberi are in I don't realy care.
Could you source that? On the wiki it only says they're "ancient elemental spirits whom the Wizards can summon and magically bind to their person." - Djinn

I'm paraphrasing, but the thing about the new plane of magic from 7th Dragon ascendance and the Djinn being denizens of that plane is on page 65 of the Compendium.

How to Make an Inferno Lineup
First, you need Hell Hounds. Hell Hounds upgrade to Cerberi, and you need to continually remind your artists that Cerberi have three heads and not two. If you turn your back on them for a moment, they'll draw them with two heads and then you have to take a drink.
Secondly, you have seven more unit slots to fill. All of them will be filled with Red Dudes. These are interchangeable dudes, who are red.
Each of your Red Dudes needs to be visually distinct. Not distinct enough that you could tell what they were or what they do from the art alone, but distinct enough that the game can be played and you can tell the units apart while you are playing it. This can take the form of one or more phyiscal traits and or held objects. Physical traits are chosen from the Inferno Physical Trait List, and held objects are chosen from the Inferno Held Objects List.
Inferno Physical Traits List
• Bigger horns
• Body spikes
• Tattered trousers
• Small wings
• Big wings
• Boobs
• Hooves
• Tail
• Head on fire
• Ethnic hat
Inferno Held Objects List
• Whip
• Club
• Ball of fire
• Sword made of fire
• Scythe
• Pitch fork
Now, no matter what selections you've made from the traits and held objects lists, you will need to assign your non-Cerberus units to various power levels and combat roles. It is important to remember that there is absolutely no correlation at all between the appearance choices you have made and these mundane game mechanical concerns. If you choose to have a unit that has Small Wings, Boobs, and a Whip, that can be a low tier ranged unit as in Heroes 6 or a high tier melee unit as in Armored Princess. It really makes no difference at all, so simply make sure you fill all niches.
Niche Requirements:
• 3 Core Creatures
• 3 Elite Creatures
• 2 Champion Creatures
• At least 1 Ranged creature in both Core and Elite categories.
• At least 1 Melee creature in Core.
• At least 1 Skirmish creature
• At least 1 Support creature.
Finally, assign fiendish names to things. These have very limited constraints. First, if you have elected to give an Inferno unit the "Boobs" trait, it must also have a feminine name. Good choices are things like "Succubus" and "Demonette." Secondly, if you want to assign a name that is "high rank" such as "Pit Lord" or "Arch Devil" that unit has to be Elite or Champion. But remember, any of these units can still be Melee, Ranged, Skirmish, or Support.
Following these step by step instructions, you can make a formulaic Inferno faction list that will be exactly as interesting and memorable as the Inferno faction list from every other Heroes or King's Bounty title that they have appeared in.

I agree in general with these, but I think that this shouldn't be the norm for all factions. For example you could have 2 ranged in Core like Dungeon had in Heroes 6. It's not a requirement to have 1 ranged Core and one Elite, the formula becomes repetitive if you think the lineups that way.
It also depends on what faction you're talking about. Some are more upfront with might power (Orcs, Demons), some prefer range combat (Sylvan, Academy), some are more defensive in nature (Haven, Fortress, Necropolis). Some rely on Magic for Damage (Academy, Dungeon, Inferno), some use Magic for buffs/debuffs (Haven, Sanctuary, Necropolis) and some want sustainability through magic (heal, regeneration, resurrection, raise dead, summoning).
So it's a combination of many factors. We've seen Inferno with only one shooter in both Heroes 3 and Heroes 5. Heroes 6 gave us 2 and I don't think it was bad, just that it made things feel more.. plain. If you use the same formula too many times you'll have a lack of variety, and that takes away from the uniqueness of each faction.

I do think Inferno would get a lot more epic if they took inspiration from the Disciples series demons.
I remember being legitimately scared by those demons...

those guys were too creepy. i agree to a "possessed" unit.
imagine a building producing possesseds! its story would be smth like this:
X building is something like a trap door on ashan. it attracts humans and then transports them to sheogh for possession to serve as a first wave army

The only way you could have humanoid warriors is if they're incubuses or some kind of lava elemental with humanoid shape. Other things seem a bit of a stretch to me.
